Govt move to end B'desh transshipment facility shows focus on NE: Himanta

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Centre's decision to withdraw the transshipment facility to Bangladesh for exports to various countries reflected Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government's priority to safeguard the security of the North East region. He also described the decision as a reflection of the government's commitment to protect the country's "strategic and economic priorities". India on Wednesday withdrew the transshipment facility extended to Bangladesh for exports to the Middle East, Europe and various other countries through its ports and airports. The move came against the backdrop of the recent controversial statement of the head of Bangladesh's interim government Muhammad Yunus in China that India's northeastern states are landlocked and his country was the only guardian of the Indian Ocean in the region. India's decision to revoke the transhipment facility for Bangladesh underscores Hon'ble Prime Minister @narendramodi's unwavering commitment to

Forest areas encroached in 25 states, MP, Assam worst affected: Govt report

Over 13,000 sq km of forest area, more than the total geographical area of Delhi, Sikkim and Goa combined, is under encroachment in 25 states and Union Territories, according to data submitted by the Union Environment Ministry to the National Green Tribunal. Last year, the NGT took suo motu cognisance of a PTI report that cited government data showing that 7,50,648 hectares (or 7,506.48 sq km) of forest area -- more than five times the size of Delhi -- was under encroachment in India. In April last year, the NGT had directed the ministry to compile the details of encroachment of forest areas in all states and Union Territories in a prescribed format. In a report submitted to the NGT last week, the ministry said that as of March 2024, a total of 13,05,668.1 hectares (or 13,056 sq km) of forest area was under encroachment in 25 states and UTs that have provided data so far. These states and UTs are Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chandigarh, ...

Afspa lifted from Dibrugarh, only 3 Assam districts remain under it

The Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) has been withdrawn from Assam's Dibrugarh district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Thursday. Addressing a press conference, Sarma said it is now in force in only three districts of the state. The law empowers security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without a prior warrant. It also gives a certain level of immunity to the security forces if an operation goes wrong. "We had requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to lift the disturbed areas tag from Dibrugarh as we are planning to develop it as the second capital of the state," Sarma said. He heard our request and a notification has been issued by the Centre in this regard, he said. "AFSPA will now be in force in Tinsukia, Sivasagar and Charaideo districts," the CM said. "The AFSPA has been withdrawn from 32 districts of the state and we hope that it will be soon withdrawn from the remaining three districts as well," he added. The state was declared a

Asked about the recent accident and loss of lives at a coal mine in Assam where allegedly rat-hole mining was being carried out, Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy said in Lok Sabha that he has spoken to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on the matter. "It is the responsibility of the state government to check rat-hole mining," he said. Reddy said the Assam chief minister has conveyed to him that around 250 rat-hole mining sites have been closed down in the state and 12 people were arrested in this connection. Replying to another supplementary question on alleged illegal mining in Jharkhand, he said the state police and government have to act against it as it is their responsibility.
