B'desh court orders report submission by Nov 28 in case against Hasina

A Bangladesh court on Saturday ordered the police to submit the investigation report of a murder case against former premier Sheikh Hasina and 23 others by November 28, according to media reports. The murder case was filed over the death of an 18-year-old college student in Mirpur, Dhaka, during a crackdown by the Hasina-led Awami League government on student-led mass protests that led to her ouster. On August 5, Hasina, 77, fled to India in the face of the violent protests against a controversial quota system in government jobs, which led to the death of hundreds of people since mid-July. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ziadur Rahman ordered the submission of the probe report by November 28 after the case was presented in his court, The Daily Star newspaper reported. The case was filed on August 15 by the victim's brother, who asserted that the accused were directly involved in or facilitated the violence that led to his brother's death and injuries to other ...

India-Bangladesh DG-level border talks scheduled for November postponed

The DG-level border talks between India and Bangladesh, scheduled to be held in Delhi next month, have been postponed following a change in plan by the neighbouring country, official sources said on Friday. The bi-annual talks led by the heads of the Border Security Force (BSF) and its Bangladeshi counterpart the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were to be tentatively held between November 18 and 22 in the national capital, the first such meeting after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5. Sources told PTI that the Bangladeshi side informed about the postponement and indicated that they were working on "an early date" for the meeting to be held. Overall, it will be the 55th edition of the Director General (DG)-level talks between the two forces that also includes officials from the home and external affairs ministries, and anti-narcotics, Customs and some other federal agencies from both the countries that have a stake in border management. B'desh bans Awami League-backed Chhatra League under Anti-Terrorism Act

Bangladesh's interim government on Wednesday banned ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League party's student organisation Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) under the Anti-Terrorism Act. A notification signed by Senior Secretary Md Abdul Momen of the Public Security Division under the Ministry of Home Affairs said the student body over the past 15 years under the Awami League government was involved in various activities that disrupted public safety, including murder, rape, torture, harassment in student dormitories, and tender manipulation. The notification said there was sufficient evidence indicating the student body continued to engage in conspiratorial, destructive, and provocative activities against the State even after the fall of the Awami League government. Hasina on August 5 fled to India in the face of violent protests against her government, leading to the death of hundreds of people since mid-July. During the Anti-Discrimination movement, BCL leaders and ...

Tension grips Bangladesh as protesters demand President's resignation

Several hundred protesters on Tuesday tried to storm the presidential palace, demanding President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation for his recent comment on deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. In an interview with Bangla daily Manab Zamin last week, Shahabuddin said he did not have any documentary evidence of Hasina resigning as prime minister before she fled the country on August 5 amidst student-led mass protests. Witnesses and TV footage showed protestors under different banners scuffling with police as they barred the demonstrators from entering the Bangabhaban. The police eventually fired sound grenades, prompting army troops to later intervene and then send policemen inside the palace. The situation eased a little as the military using loudspeakers requested agitators to leave the Bangabhaban gate. The Business Standard, a Bangladeshi daily, quoted hospital sources as saying that two people sustained gunshot injuries when security forces fired shots to contain protesters

Hasina should be deported if India obeys extradition treaty: B'desh adviser

A top adviser in Bangladesh's interim government has said that his country would strongly protest if India tried to refuse extradition of ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina by citing any provision in the treaty, media reports said on Friday. Law Adviser Asif Nazrul's comment came hours after Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday issued arrest warrants against Hasina, who fled to India after being ousted following massive anti-government protests. The tribunal directed the authorities to produce Hasina and 45 others charged along with her before it by November 18. Asif, while speaking to a news channel late on Thursday, said they will have many legal arrangements but "India is certainly bound to return Hasina (to Bangladesh) if India honestly interprets this." Bangladesh and India already have an extradition treaty. Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi on Thursday said: "As we said earlier, she had come here at a short notice for safety reasons, and sh

35 incidents related to Durga Puja in Bangladesh since Oct 1, 17 arrested

Seventeen persons have been arrested and about a dozen cases registered after Bangladesh witnessed about 35 untoward incidents related to the ongoing Durga Puja celebrations across the country this month, police said here. The development comes a day after it was discovered that a hand-crafted golden mukut (crown) gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was stolen from a Hindu temple in Bangladesh's southwestern Satkhira district amid Durga Puja celebrations, a theft over which India expressed concern. The five-day Hindu religious festival began with an invocation of Goddess Durga, an occasion called Maha Shasthi on Wednesday. The celebrations would conclude with the immersion of Goddess Durga murtis on Sunday. The minority Hindu population -- Hindus constitute just about 8 per cent of the 170 million Bangladesh population -- faced vandalism of their businesses, and properties and destruction of temples during the student-led violence that erupted following the ouster of Prime Minist
