Hardik Pandya likely to lead India in upcoming T20Is against Sri Lanka

All-rounder Hardik Pandya will, in all likelihood, lead India in the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka, scheduled to start from January 3 in Mumbai, according to BCCI sources. The second and third matches of the series will be held in Pune (January 5) and Rajkot (January 7). It is understood that Rohit Sharma's thumb injury might take some more time to heal. However, there is no clarity whether he (Rohit) will step down from the T20 captaincy or the matter put on hold for the time being. While it has been clear since India's T20 World Cup semi-final exit in Australia that there will be a change in guard once the new selection committee takes over, there has been no formal announcement yet. Also despite speculation, it can be confirmed that there was no discussion on India's T20 captaincy in the Apex Council meeting. "The matter wasn't even on the Apex Council agenda and it wasn't discussed on the forum. Only the selection committee can take a call on captaincy," a BCCI offic

Byju's may terminate jersey sponsorship deal with BCCI, MPL may exit too

Two of Indian cricket team's main sponsors, edtech major Byju's and MPL sports, want to exit from their sponsorship agreements with the BCCI. In June, Byju's had extended its jersey sponsorship agreement with the Board until November 2023 for an estimated USD 35 million. Byju's now wants to terminate its agreement with the BCCI which has asked the company to continue at least until March 2023. "BCCI received an email from Byju's on 4.11.2022 requesting terminating the association post the recently concluded T20 World Cup. As per our discussions with Byju's, we have asked them to continue the current arrangement and continue the partnership at least until 31.3.2023," read a BCCI note on the matter. The matter was discussed at the BCCI Apex Council meeting on Wednesday. The brand had replaced Oppo back in 2019. Byju's was also one of the sponsors of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The edtech company had recently announced plans to lay off not more than five per cent of its total .

Many seniors players like Kohli, Ashwin won't play T20 next year: Sources

India's T20 squad will undergo a major transition in the next 24 months because senior players such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin will be gradually eased out, BCCI sources said on Thursday. While it appears that Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik have played their last games in the shortest format, the BCCI will leave it on Kohli and Rohit to decide on their T20I future. After team's humiliating defeat in the T20 World Cup semifinal, a visibly upset Rohit was consoled by head coach Rahul Dravid, who fronted the media after the match. The next T20 World Cup is still two years away and if those privy to developments are to be believed, there will be a brand new team in place with Hardik Pandya being the long-term captaincy choice. "The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of

Sourav Ganguly hopes BCCI will 'sort out' Indian team's food problem

Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday did not read too much into the issue of some Indian players refusing to eat the food provided by the T20 World Cup organisers after a practice session in Sydney. Cold sandwiches and falafel (spiced mashed chickpeas or other pulses) were served to the Indian players after practice session on Tuesday and some of them refused the offering, opting for meals in their hotel rooms instead. India play Netherlands in their second T20 World Cup match on Thursday. "I'm sure BCCI will sort this out," said Ganguly while talking to reporters at the Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club here. Ganguly also spoke about Ireland's stunning victory over England in the T20 World Cup on Wednesday, a five-run win via Duckworth-Lewis method at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Terming it a "small match", Ganguly said: "This is not the real result, I'm sure they would bounce back. You can't help when it rains." Ganguly felicitated Commonwealth Games medallists Sa

Travelling to Pakistan not BCCI's call, government will decide: Roger Binny

The BCCI can't take a call on its own on whether the Indian team will travel to Pakistan for the 2023 Asia Cup or not as it relies on the government to make such decisions, new Board president Rogery Binny said on Thursday. Speaking at an event organised by Karnataka State Cricket Association here, Binny said the BCCI has not approached the government yet on travelling to Pakistan next year but eventually the central government will only decide on the matter. "That is not BCCI's call. We need government's clearance to leave the country. Whether we leave the country or teams coming into the country, we need clearance. "Once we get clearance from the government then we go with it. We can't make decision on our own. We have to rely on the government. We have not approached them yet," said World Cup winner Binny. The Asia Cup is scheduled to be played in Pakistan in September next year, ahead of the ODI World Cup in India. Binny's comments came after BCCI secretary Jay Shah said the
