Crude oil prices rose by Rs 22 to Rs 4,029 per barrel in futures trade Wednesday as speculators were indulged in creating speculative positions, taking positive cues from domestic markets. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, crude oil for delivery in April was trading higher by Rs 22, or 0.55 per cent, to Rs 4,029 per barrel, in a business turnover of 964 lots. Analysts said speculators built fresh positions after oil prices rose in the global markets, giving lift to crude oil prices in futures trade here. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate gained 0.69 per cent to USD 57.26, while global benchmark Brent was up 0.43 per cent to USD 66.96 per barrel.

Gold prices rose by Rs 154 to Rs 32,154 per 10 gram in futures trading Wednesday as speculators widened their bets, tracking a firm trend overseas. At the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold for delivery in April was trading higher by Rs 154, or 0.48 per cent, at Rs 32,154 per 10 gram in a business turnover of 9,276 lots. Similarly, the June contracts of the precious metal was trading up Rs 171, or 0.53 per cent, at Rs 32,432 per 10 gram with a business volume of 9,970 lots. Analysts said raising of bets by participants, taking positive cues from global market as weakness in dollar raised demand for the precious metal as a safe-haven, mainly pushed up the gold prices at futures trade here. Globally, gold rose 0.66 per cent to trade at USD 1,304.89 an ounce in Singapore.

Automobile dealers' body FADA Wednesday said retail sales of passenger vehicles (PV) in February declined by 8.25 per cent to 2,15,276 units as compared to the same period last year, hit by lower offtake by end customers. According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), PV sales stood at 2,34,632 units in February 2018. Two-wheeler sales declined by 7.97 per cent to 11,25,405 units last month as compared with 12,22,883 units in year-ago period. "After a month of spike in PV sales in January which was largely due to year-end stock clearance getting extended and few new launches which generated some excitement, the industry is once again witnessing downward trend as February turned out to be one of the slowest month for auto retail during this financial year," FADA President Ashish Harsharaj Kale said in a statement. Officials of the Central GST have unearthed an alleged tax fraud of Rs 224 crore and detected fake invoices worth Rs 1,289 crore by a group of eight companies involved in the trade of iron and steel products. A key suspect involved in the racket has been arrested and Rs 19.75 crore was recovered from him, a press release from the Hyderabad Central GST Commissionerate said Tuesday night. Several documents were recovered during the simultaneous searches conducted at the residential and business premises of these companies on Tuesday night. The companies have been generating fake invoices without actual supply of TMT bars, MS bars, MS flat products among others, and were passing on the input tax credit to other tax payers within the same group, besides some other taxpayers since July, 2017, it said. Shares of SpiceJet slumped 8 per cent in morning trade on BSE Wednesday, after the country banned Boeing 737 Max 8 planes following the Ethiopian Airlines crash. On Tuesday night, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) announced its decision to "immediately" ground the Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The decision came days after a 737 MAX 8 aircraft operated by the Ethiopian Airlines crashed near Addis Ababa killing 157 people, including four Indians. Following the announcement, shares of SpiceJet opened on a weak note at Rs 74, then fell further to touch an intra-day low of Rs 72.50, down 7.99 per cent over its previous close of Rs 78.80. Shares of Jet Airways also witnessed similar trend.
