Trump's talk about Canada becoming 51st state isn't funny: Canadian leaders

US President-elect Donald Trump's comments that Canada should become the 51st state are no longer a joke and are meant to undermine America's closest ally, Canada's finance minister said Wednesday. Dominic LeBlanc, the country's point person for US-Canada relations, said Trump was smiling when he first made the comment during a dinner at Mar-a-Lago with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in late November. The joke is over, said LeBlanc. It's a way for him, I think, to sow confusion, to agitate people, to create chaos knowing this will never happen. Trump keeps floating the idea that Canada should join the United States as the 51st state, saying Tuesday he would not use military force to invade the country, which is home to more than 40 million people and is a founding NATO partner. Instead, Trump said he would rely on economic force as he erroneously cast the US trade deficit with Canada a natural resource-rich nation that provides the US with commodities like oil as a subsidy. It's

Donald Trump says he will use economic force to make Canada a part of US

US President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he will use economic force to make Canada a part of the United States, a comment that attracted sharp reaction from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. No, Trump told reporters at Mar-a-Lago in Florida when asked if he is considering military force to annex and acquire Canada. Over the past few weeks, Trump has asserted that he wants to make Canada part of the United States and its 51st state. Many times, he has been mocking Trudeau as the Governor of Canada. (I will be using) economic force because Canada and the United States, that would really be something. You get rid of that artificially drawn line and you take a look at what that looks like, and it would also be much better for national security. Don't forget, we basically protect Canada, Trump said. Trudeau, who resigned as the prime minister of Canada a day earlier, responded sharply on social media. There isn't a snowball's chance in hell that Canada would become part

Flights temporarily suspended at Canada airport after airplane incident

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating an incident involving a plane at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport, which one passenger described as a rough landing that sparked flames. Nikki Valentine, who was on the PAL Airlines flight, said passengers felt a massive rumble upon landing Saturday night. The cabin tilted, we saw sparks and then flames and then smoke started getting sucked into the cabin, Valentine said Sunday. Airport spokesperson Tiffany Chase said an Air Canada Express flight operated by PAL Airlines, arriving from St John's, Newfoundland, experienced an incident upon landing at approximately 9:30 pm. Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said the Bombardier Q400 plane experienced a suspected landing gear issue after arrival and was unable to reach the terminal. Fitzpatrick said the crew and 73 passengers were off-loaded by bus and nobody on board was injured. Valentine said she is especially thankful the pilot was able to get a hold of

Canadian ministers meet with Trump's nominee in bid to avoid tariffs

Two Canadian Cabinet ministers met with President-elect Donald Trump's nominee for commerce secretary at Mar-a-Lago on Friday as Canada tries to avoid sweeping tariffs when Trump takes office. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mlanie Joly met with Howard Lutnick, Trump's nominee for commerce secretary, as well as North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, Trump's pick to lead the Interior Department. Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on all Canadian products if Canada does not stem what he calls a flow of migrants and fentanyl into the United States even though far fewer of each cross into the US from Canada than from Mexico, which Trump has also threatened. Minister LeBlanc and Minister Joly had a positive, productive meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Howard Lutnick and Doug Burgum, as a follow-up to the dinner between the Prime Minister and President Trump last month, said Jean-Sbastien Comeau, a spokesman for LeBlanc. Comeau said both ministers outlined the measur

Probing role of Canadian colleges, entities in human trafficking racket: ED

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday said it is investigating the "involvement" of some Canadian colleges and few Indian entities in a money laundering case linked to trafficking of Indians into the US from the borders of Canada. The investigation of the federal agency is linked to the death of a four-member Indian family, hailing from Dingucha village of Gujarat, who were killed due to extreme cold weather while trying to illegally cross the Canada-US border on January 19, 2022. The ED took cognisance of an Ahmedabad Police FIR against main accused Bhavesh Ashokbhai Patel and some others to file its complaint under the criminal sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Patel and others are alleged to have "hatched a well-planned conspiracy to send people (Indians) to the USA through Canada via illegal channels there by committing the offence of human trafficking". The agency's probe had earlier found that as part of this human trafficking racket, the accuse

Trump again calls to buy Greenland after eyeing Canada, Panama Canal

First it was Canada, then the Panama Canal. Now, Donald Trump again wants Greenland. The president-elect is renewing unsuccessful calls he made during his first term for the US to buy Greenland from Denmark, adding to the list of allied countries with which he's picking fights even before taking office on January 20. In a Sunday announcement naming his ambassador to Denmark, Trump wrote that, For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity." Trump again having designs on Greenland comes after the president-elect suggested over the weekend that the US could retake control of the Panama Canal if something isn't done to ease rising shipping costs required for using the waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He's also been suggesting that Canada become the 51st US state and referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as governor of the Great Stat
