China's newest aircraft carrier sails through Taiwan Strait for first time

China's newest aircraft carrier has sailed through the Taiwan Strait, the navy said Friday. The body of water separates China from Taiwan, the self-governing island that Beijing says must come under its control. The sailing could serve as a warning to the US and others against support for Taiwan, though China played down any such motive. The Fujian, which is doing sea trials ahead of its commissioning, was heading to the South China Sea to conduct training and scientific experiments, the navy said in a short post on social media. The navy said the carrier's activities were not targeting anyone else. A social media account affiliated with state media quoted an expert saying the Taiwan Strait was the normal and most reasonable and efficient route for the carrier to reach the South China Sea. It was the first time the Fujian had passed through the strait, the post by the Yuyuantantian account said. The US Navy sends warships through the strait periodically, as do some of its allies,

DGTR for anti-dumping duty on glass fibre imports from China,Thailand

The commerce ministry's investigation arm DGTR has recommended imposition of an anti-dumping duty for five years on imports of glass fibre, used in various sectors, including electricals from China, Bahrain, Thailand, with an aim to guard domestic players from cheap inbound shipments. In its final findings, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has concluded that the product has been exported to India at a price below the normal value, resulting in dumping. The recommended duty ranges between USD 194 per tonne and USD 394 per tonne. "The authority recommends imposition of anti-dumping duty" on the imports of the product from China, Bahrain and Thailand for a period of "five years," the DGTR has said in a notification. China urges all sections in Nepal to properly handle issues, restore order

China on Wednesday urged all sections of Nepal to "properly handle" domestic issues, and restore social order and stability after violent protests led to the resignation of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. China and Nepal are traditional friendly neighbours, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told a media briefing here, commenting for the first time on the situation in Nepal. We hope all sections of Nepal will properly handle domestic issues, restore social order and regional stability as soon as possible, he said in response to a question. Lin, however, did not comment on the resignation of Oli, regarded as a pro-China leader instrumental in deepening Kathmandu's strategic ties with Beijing. Oli, who was recently in China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit and the September 3 military parade commemorating the victory over Japan in World War II, resigned on Tuesday, following mass protests across Nepal. He quit after hundreds of agitators entere

US tech firms enabled surveillance, detention of thousands in China

The body camera hung from the top of the IV drip, recording the slightest twitch made by Yang Guoliang as he lay bloody and paralysed in a hospital bed after a police beating with bricks. By then, surveillance was nothing new for the Yang family in rural China, snared in an intricate network based on US technology that spies on them and predicts what they'll do. Their train tickets, hotel bookings, purchases, text messages and phone calls are forwarded to the government. Their house is ringed with more than a dozen cameras. They've tried to go to Beijing 20 times in the past few years, but masked men show up and grab them, often before they depart. And last year, Yang's wife and younger daughter were detained and now face trial for disrupting the work of the Chinese state a crime carrying a sentence of up to a decade in prison. Yet the Yangs say they are not criminals. They are simply farmers trying to beg Beijing to stop local officials from seizing their 1 1/2 acres of land in ..
