India can be in a "positive spot" when it comes to ship building prospects and the country should look at making niche, technologically-advanced vessels rather than large bulk carriers, according to a senior industry official. Cochin Shipyard Ltd's Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S Nair also said that India with an all-round positivity could emerge as an alternative hub in the space for niche and medium-sized, technologically advanced vessels amid the green transition. The general perception is that the focus should be building all those large bulk carriers or tankers for making India as a manufacturing base for ships, he pointed. "(However), I have a slightly different perception because our current structure is not ideally suited for that. So why shouldn't we look at our strengths, which would be (to focus) a little bit more on niche vessels that have advanced technologies, alternate fuel cells, hybrid electric vessels. Bharat Electronics Limited received an order of Rs 2,118.57 crore from Cochin Shipyard Limited for supply of various equipment consisting of sensors, weapon equipment, fire control systems and communication equipment for six numbers of next generation missile vessels and class of anti-surface warfare corvettes for Indian Navy. This project will have participation of Indian electronics and associated industries, including MSMEs, which are sub-vendors of BEL, Bengaluru-headquartered BEL said in a statement on Friday. The equipment manufactured by BEL are part of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' programme. The company has also received additional orders worth Rs 886 crore since the last disclosure on August 25 and the said orders pertain to upgrade of AFNET SATCOM N/W, upgrade of Akash missiles with RF Seeker, inertial navigation system and other equipment with accessories and spares, among others. Cochin Shipyard Ltd on Thursday reported a 14 per cent fall in consolidated profit at Rs 112.79 crore in the quarter ended September. The company had posted a consolidated profit of Rs 131.30 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal, it said in a filing to BSE. The consolidated income of the company in the second quarter of the current fiscal increased to Rs 744.88 crore from Rs 738.01 crore in the year-ago period. The company's board has approved an interim dividend of Rs 7 per equity share for 2022-23.
Cochin Shipyard has received an order of about Rs 1,000 crore to construct vessels from a European client, the company said in a regulatory filing on Thursday. The completion time for the project is 35 months, it said. "CSL has bagged an international order for constructing 2 nos of Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (CSOV) from a European Client, with an option to build 4 more of such vessels to be exercised by the Owner within a period of one year," the filing said. These vessels are intended for the services of offshore wind farm installations towards their commissioning and maintenance. "These specialised vessels are being contracted for the first time in the country. The estimated project cost for the firm order is approximately Rs 1,000 crore and the project completion time is 35 months," the filing said.
