After AI camera, Cong raises corruption charges against govt's KFON project

After the Artificial Intelligence (AI) camera project, the opposition Congress on Thursday levelled corruption charges against the LDF government's flagship Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) scheme which was envisaged to provide free internet for poor families. Lashing out at the LDF government, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly V D Satheesan alleged there was massive corruption in the project which has offered to provide free internet to 20 lakh families. Sub-contracts had been awarded violating rules and the PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which led the consortium of companies that had been awarded the contract, was given an excess tender amount of Rs 520 crore than the actual estimate, he said at a press meet here. The huge tender excess was given against an existing government circular issued by the then finance secretary K M Abraham that tender excess should not be more than 10 per cent in government contracts, he pointed out. Why couldn't 'omnipresent' Modi see loot by BJP govt in Karnataka: Priyanka

In a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress General secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday wondered why the "omnipresent and omniscient" leader could not see the "loot" happening in Karnataka by the '40 per cent commission government' of the BJP. Addressing a public rally here in Vijayapura district ahead of Assembly election on May 10, she sought to know why the 'vikas purush' (development man) Narendra Modi still says that he has a dream of developing Karnataka and presents it to the nation as the "development model". The whole world calls the Prime Minister "omnipotent", supreme, and "greatest of all" and 'vikas purush', the Congress leader said in a sarcastic tone, adding that Modi keeps saying that it is his dream of developing the state and projecting it as a model for the rest of the country. "You (Modi) are supreme, omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. Why couldn't you fulfil your dream? When your own government was plundering people by becoming '

Cong slams Kerala govt over AI camera use, calls it a 'massive scam'

The Congress and the party-led opposition UDF bloc on Wednesday stepped up their attack on the ruling Left front in Kerala over the Artificial Intelligence (AI) camera issue by terming it as a "massive scam" and questioning whether the LDF government has the "spine" to honestly investigate it. Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly V D Satheesan and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president K Sudhakaran alleged that the AI camera project was a huge scam for which the way was paved by the state government and Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Limited (Keltron). Sudhakaran, also an MP, said the only solution to the problem was carrying out an honest and proper investigation and placing the findings before the public. "The question is whether the Left government has the courage, the intention or the spine to do that. They have to clearly say what they intend to do," he said while speaking to reporters at Kannur and added that the Congress was examining legal

PM's remark 'Congress divides society' sounds 'unreal': Kapil Sibal

Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remark that the Congress follows divisive politics sounds "unreal", as he cited the censor board's clearance to 'The Kerala Story' despite the film allegedly "demonising an entire community." Addressing a public meeting in Karnataka on Tuesday, Modi had said the people of Karnataka have to beware of both Congress and the JD(S). They are two separate parties only for show, but they are one by their heart and deeds. Both are dynastic, both promote corruption, and both do politics to divide the society, he had said. Reacting to the remarks, Sibal said in a tweet, "The Kerala Story Cleared by the Censor Board, spreads venom and demonises an entire community and the PM in Karnataka says Congress follows 'politics of dividing society'. Sounds unreal!" 'The Kerala Story', starring Adah Sharma, is set to be released in cinemas on May 5. Written and directed by Sudipto Sen, the film claims to be "unearthing" the ..

Cong manifesto for Karnataka polls triggers war of words in Madhya Pradesh

The promise to ban the Bajrang Dal by the Congress in its manifesto for the Karnataka Assembly polls has triggered a war of words in Madhya Pradesh, with the state home minister questioning the Hanuman bhakti (devotion to Hanuman) of Kamal Nath, the Congress state chief. In a letter to Nath on Wednesday, Home Minister Narottam Mishra said, The Congress may go to any extent for the politics of appeasement. In his counter, Nath said that even the Supreme Court is saying that action should be taken against those spreading hatred. The Congress, in its election manifesto for the May 10 Karnataka polls, said it will take decisive action as per law including imposing a ban on organisations like Bajrang Dal and PFI and alleged that they were promoting enmity among communities. Bajrang Dal is a right-wing Hindu outfit and has often courted controversies over vigilante action. Bajrang is another name for Lord Hanuman and the outfit's insignia carries the picture of the deity. I have written

Karnataka polls: PM Modi says Congress is enemy of peace & development

In a frontal attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said the entire politics of the party is based on "divide and rule" policy, and charged it with going across the world defaming the country, when India's democracy and development is being appreciated and respected globally. Calling Congress the "enemy of peace and development", the Prime Minister also accused it of insulting and abusing India's defence forces. "Congress is an enemy of peace and development. When Congress is there, investors will flee. Congress protects 'aakas' (boss) of terror, they encourage appeasement," Modi said. Addressing a public meeting here in Dakshina Kannada district of coastal Karnataka, which is a BJP stronghold, he said Congress' only identity is "appeasement politics". "Will you (people) allow such Congress to come to power, will you allow Karnataka to get ruined?" "Across the country whichever state wants peace and development, the first thing people there do is to oust

Cong slams BJP, says May 10 poll to propel 'derailed' Karnataka engine

The Congress on Wednesday slammed the BJP over its "double engine" pitch in the Karnataka polls, saying the May 10 election is to propel the Karnataka engine which got "derailed" by the BJP in the last four years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP have been batting for the continuation of BJP rule at the Centre and in Karnataka and have been highlighting the benefits of "double engine" governments. "Double engine" is a term often used by BJP leaders to refer to the party ruling at the Centre and in a state. Slamming the BJP's pitch, Congress' general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, "What Double Engine?! 94% of the revenue of Karnataka state government comes from the state's own revenue plus its own share of taxes from the Centre, determined not by 'Modi Aashirwaad' but by the Finance Commission formula." The May 10 election is to propel the Karnataka engine which got "derailed" by BJP in the last four years, Ramesh said. "It has to be an en

The Congress on Wednesday said it hopes SEBI will use all means at its disposal to get clarity about the ultimate beneficial ownership of foreign funds invested in the Adani group. The party also asserted that public interest must not be undermined using the excuse of confidentiality and privacy. Its assertion came over a media report which claimed that some foreign funds invested in Adani group companies have declined to identify their beneficial owners, citing client confidentiality and foreign privacy laws. Tagging the report, the Congress' general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said on Twitter, "We hope SEBI will use all the means at its disposal to get clarity about ultimate beneficial ownership of these funds given the serious and credible allegations of money-laundering, round-tripping and violations of securities laws against the Adani Group."
