Sewer lines in unauthorised colonies of Delhi's Sangam Vihar approved

The Delhi government has approved a project to lay a 25.5-km-long sewer line in 11 unauthorised colonies of Sangam Vihar. The project will provide relief to around 3 lakh people suffering from sewage problems. According to Water Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, the colonies of Ambedkar Nagar and Deoli Assembly in Sangam Vihar will be connected with the sewer line so that treated water can flow into the Yamuna. The sewage coming out of the unauthorised colonies of Sangam Vihar will be sent to the nearest sewage treatment plant (STP) through the sewer lines, he said. Bharadwaj instructed Delhi Jal Board (DJB) officials to complete the project within a stipulated time. "The main objective of the Kejriwal government is to clean the Yamuna by 2025 on a priority basis," he said.

Additional 70,000 street lights to be installed in Delhi under govt scheme

Delhi Urban Development Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Tuesday gave an approval to the installation of additional 70,000 street lights in the national capital, officials said. This will be in addition to the 2.1 lakh street lights that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had earlier aimed to install in the city, they said. "In another landmark decision that will make the national capital safer for its citizens, the Kejriwal government is set to install 70,000 street lights in various constituencies of Delhi under the Mukhyamantri Street Light Yojana," the department said in a statement. Bharadwaj gave the nod to the scheme to install an additional 70,000 street lights, increasing the target from 2.1 lakh to 2.8 lakh, and directed the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to complete the project within the timeline, it said. Ahead of G20 summit, PWD busy desilting drains in Delhi: Officials

Ahead of the G20 summit scheduled to be held in September, the Delhi public works department (PWD) has got down to ensure the desilting of the city's major drains to check waterlogging during monsoon, officials said on Tuesday. The PWD has begun the work of desilting the drains. The deadline is May 31 for the first phase of desilting, a senior PWD official said. "Since the G20 summit is going to be held in the city, various zones have been asked to carry out this work," he added. The PWD zones have also been directed to ensure that the debris is picked up and disposed of immediately and not dumped on the pavements, the officer said. Lieutenant Governor (LG) V K Saxena, who is actively ensuring the city's preparedness ahead of the G20 summit, had earlier directed officials to ensure that there is no waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season when certain events related to the summit are scheduled to be held. Temperatures soar this summer but Delhi's heat action plan not ready yet

Most parts of India are expected to see above-normal temperatures and more heatwave days this summer season but the national capital is yet to implement a heat action plan (HAP), four years after the Centre recommended it to do so. Environment Minister Gopal Rai told PTI on Tuesday that the government is "holding discussions with experts, and a heatwave action plan will be prepared if something concrete emerges". HAPs are the primary policy response to economically damaging and life-threatening heatwaves. They prescribe a number of activities, disaster responses and post-heatwave response measures to decrease the impact of heatwaves. Over 430% rise in active Covid cases in Delhi since March-end: Data

From 932 cases on March 30 to 4,976 on April 17, active coronavirus cases in Delhi have registered a jump of more than 430 per cent in nearly three weeks, according to official data. Delhi has reported more than 13,200 cases of COVID-19 in the past 19 days. The active case tally on Monday stood at 4,976, a jump of nearly 433 per cent since March 30 when the corresponding figure was 932, data showed. The active case count was, in fact, higher on Sunday at 5,297. Though Delhi has seen a spike in coronavirus cases in the recent past, hospitalisation remains low. Delhi records minimum temp of 22.5 deg C, city to witness partly cloudy sky

The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 22.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday morning, a notch above the normal, as the weather department forecast a partly cloudy sky later in the day. Delhi on Monday logged 1,017 COVID-19 cases, while the positivity rate jumped to 32.25 per cent, the highest in 15 months, according to data shared by the city government's health department. The capital had recorded a positivity rate of 30.6 per cent on January 14 last year. With the new cases, Delhi's COVID-19 tally climbed to 20,24,244. Four fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 26,567, the health department bulletin stated. Of the latest fatalities, COVID-19 was the primary cause of death in two cases, it stated. According to the bulletin, the fresh cases emerged out of 3,153 tests conducted the previous day. Delhi on Sunday had logged 1,634 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 29.68 per cent and three deaths. On Saturday, the city had recorded 1,396 COVID-19 cases with a positivity rate of 31.9 per cent.

PM to inaugurate Global Buddhist Summit in Delhi to be held on April 20-21

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a two-day Global Buddhist Summit in Delhi, to be held later this week, that will see the participation of eminent Buddhist monks, scholars and delegates from various parts of the world, Union Culture Minister G Kishan Reddy said on Monday. BJP demands Kejriwal's resignation over 'liquor scam', stages protest

The BJP on Monday staged a protest near the Delhi Assembly demanding Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation over the alleged excise policy scam. Kejriwal is the "mastermind" of the "liquor scam" and he will have to go, the BJP's Delhi unit Virendra Sachdeva charged as he led the protesters. Heatwave conditions prevailed at isolated places in Delhi on Sunday, and a fresh spell of rain will provide some relief starting Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Delhi's primary weather station, the Safdarjung Observatory, logged a maximum temperature of 40.4 degrees Celsius, three notches more than normal.
