The 28-year-old driver of the Mercedes car which allegedly ran over and killed a fruit vendor and injured another near Dwarka's Ganpati Chowk was arrested on Tuesday, police said. Nukul, a resident of Raj Nagar, Palam Colony was behind the wheel of the luxury car when the accident occurred on Sunday night, police said, adding that the vehicle involved in the accident was seized. According to a senior officer, a Mercedes emblem was found at the spot which prompted the police to procure details of about 4,000 cars of the same marquee from the Road Transport Authority to ascertain the details of the vehicle involved in the accident. Police said an eyewitness and the person who called to inform about the accident too were questioned. As there were no CCTV cameras around the accident spot, the footage from adjacent roads was analysed. A Jodhpur-bound SpiceJet plane, carrying 60 passengers, made an emergency landing at the airport here Tuesday, reportedly after smoke was detected in the baggage compartment, a source said. The airline was operating a Q-400 aircraft. According to the source, Air Traffic Controller announced full emergency for the flight SG-2695 at around 1500 hours. The source said that reportedly smoke was detected in the baggage compartment and that there were around 60 passengers on board. There was no immediate comment from SpiceJet on the incident.

Concerned over the rising number of fire incidents in Maharashtra, state industries minister Subhash Desai Tuesday pitched for making the process stringent for obtaining fire no-objection certificates (NOCs). Admitting that the government did relax a few norms while reducing the number of approvals needed to be taken by industries under the ease of doing business, Desai said that certain safety norms were also relaxed during the process. "We reduced the number of approvals required from 75 to 25 while trying to bring in ease of doing businesses. However, after these incidents, we feel we shouldn't give any relaxation if they don't exercise their duties with the sense of responsibilities," he said while speaking at an event organised by the Power Cable Alliance. The Punjab Food Safety department has asked traders not to paste stickers on fruit and vegetable sellers, noting that these can pose health hazards to consumers. The Food Safety Teams have been directed to check the sale of such fruits and vegetables as well as make traders aware of the provisions the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 as per which no food business operator shall store, sell or distribute any article of food which is unsafe, Punjab Food Safety Commissioner K S Pannu said. Pannu explained that the use of stickers on food products to provide information on traceability, grades, price etc. is a common practice across the globe. Three people trapped by a big fire inside a godown, where mattress and sofa foam were kept, were charred to death on Tuesday near Barnala city of Punjab, a senior police official said. The three were employees of the industrial unit in Ugoke village, Senior Superintendent of Police Harjit Singh said. Singh said fire-fighters struggled for nearly six hours to bring the blaze under control. Fire tenders from adjoining districts were also pressed into service. A government spokesperson later said the fire had been extinguished. The cause of the fire is being investigated, the SSP said. Flight operations with wide-body planes will resume at Calicut airport in Kerala from Wednesday with Saudia Airlines operating services to Jeddah, according to an release. Following safety concerns, wide-body aircraft operations were suspended from May 2015 at the airport, which handles around 2.6 million international passengers every year. The Airports Authority of India (AAI), which is operating the aerodrome, has said wide-body aircraft operations would resume from Wednesday. Saudia Airlines would operate flights from Calicut to Jeddah on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday as well as to Riyadh on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. The carrier would operate wide-body planes -- A330-300 and B777-200ER -- for the services. According to the release, the AAI has taken action for strengthening and re-carpeting of the runway and grading of runway strip to cater to the requirement of heavy aircraft operations. The Punjab Transport department will procure breath analysers, speed guns and body cams to check drunken driving and over speeding in the state, Transport Minister Aruna Chaudhary said Tuesday. As part of a pilot project, speed cameras will be installed on the Chandigarh-Nangal road to check over speeding, she said after presiding over the meeting of Punjab State Road Safety Council. "The use of high-end technology will ensure curbing of road mishaps, while a comprehensive programme will be chalked out to educate people on following road safety norms," Chaudhary said. She directed the concerned officers to act against those violating traffic rules. The minister further said weighing scales will be procured by the authorities to check overloading of vehicles along with car body cutters to rescue accident victims trapped inside mangled vehicles in case of road mishaps.

Three workers trapped by a fire inside a factory near Barnala city of Punjab were charred to death on Tuesday, a senior police official said. The fire broke out in the morning and fire-fighters struggled for nearly six hours to bring it under control, Senior Superintendent of Police Harjit Singh said. Three people were killed and 24 injured Tuesday when a powerful explosion rocked a shopping mall in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, but a fire official said it was not caused by a bomb. The official Bernama news agency said the blast could have been caused by a leaking gas tank.
