Five persons were killed and another one injured when their SUV collided with a truck on the Agra-Mumbai highway near Barrufatak area in Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh, the police said Saturday. The incident occurred late night on Friday under Theekri police station limits when the driver of the SUV, which was headed to Shirdi in Maharashtra, apparently lost his control over the vehicle. "The SUV hit a road divider and landed in the opposite lane before colliding with a truck," said Theekri police station in-charge Vijay Sisodia. The injured person has been shifted to Indore for treatment, he said. The deceased have been identified as Sudeep Rai (26), Prakash Pargi (32), Santosh Pargi (40), Prakash Sisodia (28) and Haridas Bairagi (34), he said, adding that they belonged to Sailana town in Ratlam district.

Three members of a Delhi-based family were killed after a truck hit their motorcycle near Rohana village here on Friday, police said. The accident occurred on the Saharanpur-Delhi highway, about 25 km from here, Friday evening, according to Station House Officer Anil Kapervan. Saleem (52), his wife Bano Begum (45) and their son Bhura (22) died in the accident, he said. They were returning to Muzaffarnagar from Saharanpur. The family had come here to visit their relatives. The couple and their child were residents of Shastri Park, Delhi, the SHO said. The victims were rushed to a hospital where they were declared brought dead.
A tsunami warning was issued Friday for coastal areas of Alaska's southern Kenai Peninsula after a powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. Three officials of the Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh were arrested Friday in connection with the blast at the plant which had claimed 14 lives last month. An explosion had occurred in a gas pipeline at the plant of the state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in Durg districts Bhilai town, 30 km from Raipur, on on October 8. Four officials of the energy management department had been booked for allegedly overlooking safety standards and not assessing possible hazards. The tender process related to the Balasaheb Thackeray Accidental Insurance Scheme in Maharashtra is in its final stage and its implementation will happen soon, the Legislative Council was informed Friday. Health Minister Deepak Sawant said once this scheme, which seeks to ensure no accident victim is denied immediate treatment in hospital, comes into force, the state will have three government-sponsored health plans for citizens. The Maharashtra Government said Friday that it was "positively" considering a proposal to refund the fees of students hailing from drought-hit areas. Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil made the announcement in reply to a debate on drought situation in the Legislative Council here. "We are positively considering refunding the fees of students of all streams from drought-hit areas in the current academic year. Even if a student hailing from a drought-hit area is studying in a city, we will consider him (for refund). We will start this process immediately," he said. This may put an additional burden of Rs 300-400 crore on the state treasury, he said. The opposition parties had earlier demanded that students from drought-affected areas should get a fee refund. Patil also said that sub-divisional officers have been given district collector's powers to take immediate decisions on providing water tankers. Three people, including two women, were killed on Friday after a car hit them on National Highway-31 in Assam's Baksa district, a police officer said. The vehicle reportedly came from behind and ran over the three pedestrians, who were on way to a nearby paddy field, he said. The deceased, all in their 30s, hailed from Madhopur area of Baksa district in Lower Assam.
