Deadly fire shuts down key route to Yosemite National Park

A wildfire that killed a California firefighter grew quickly and forced the closure of a key route into Yosemite National Park as crews contended with sweltering conditions, authorities said. The blaze that broke out Friday scorched more than 6 square miles (16 square kilometers) of dry brush along steep, remote hillsides on the park's western edge yesterday. It was burning largely out of control, and officials shut off electricity to many areas, including Yosemite Valley, as a safety precaution. Guests were ordered to leave Yosemite Cedar Lodge Saturday afternoon as flames crept up slopes and the air became thick with smoke. "You can't see anything, it's so smoky outside. It's crazy," said front desk clerk Spencer Arebalo, one of a handful of employees who stayed behind at the popular hotel inside the park. He said it was surreal to see the property empty at the height of tourist season. "We're counting on being closed at least one more day," Arebalo said. Evacuations were also ...

You can not put the entire blame on the (condition of) roads alone." The senior minister hastened to add that he did not have all the information about the recent accidents, and action will be taken against officials based on the facts of each case. Accident at Myanmar jade mine kills at least 15 scavengers

At least 15 people were killed and 30 injured in a landslide at a jade mine in northern Myanmar's jade mining region. A police officer in Hpakant Township in Kachin state said today that 15 bodies were retrieved from the accident site near Lonekhin village but a search was ongoing for more. He said searchers were hindered by heavy rain. A member of parliament for the area said he had seen 18 injured people from the Saturday accident at one hospital in Myitkyina, the state capital, but he believed there were at least 30 hurt. Such accidents are not rare because scavenging for jade remnants is dangerous and not well regulated. The number of missing is difficult to estimate because most scavengers are unregistered migrants from other areas.
