Woman, son killed in roof collapse near Hisar
A woman and her minor son were killed when the roof of a farm house collapsed due to heavy rain and storm in Moda Khera village here, the police said today. The family members were trying to save chickens kept in the farm house from rain water and storm when the wall collapsed yesterday. The victims were identified as Deepa (40) and her son Rattan (10). Deepa's second son Karan (8) was also injured in this incident, they said. The bodies of the deceased were handed over to family members after postmortem.
Coimbatore college student dies as disaster drill goes wrong, trainer arrested
A 19-year-old student died when she jumped off the third floor of a college building here during a disaster management drill, following which a trainer was arrested for allegedly prodding her to take the leap, police said today. In a video of the incident, which went viral, the girl appeared to be reluctant to take the jump even though a net was put up for her safe landing and, it seemed, the trainer was trying to push her, they said. Lokeshwari, a second-year BBA student, who finally took the jump, hit a sunshade in the second floor, police said. She suffered serious head injuries and died while being taken to a government hospital yesterday, they said. Students also claimed that Lokeshwari was not willing to jump. Police said R Arumugam, who claimed to be a trainer of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), was arrested based on a complaint by the student's father and remanded to custody. Coimbatore student death: Trainer arrested
Coimbatore Rural Police have arrested a trainer of the National Disaster Management training in connection with the death of second-year BBA student at Kovai Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science.The deceased, identified as Lokeshwari, died after falling from the third floor of her college building on Thursday.The CCTV footage of the incident showed that the girl, who was sitting on a higher floor, was pushed by a man, after which she hit the sunshade on the first floor and sustained fatal injuries.The deceased student was immediately rushed to AMP Hospital, Thondamuthur for first aid and later referred to CMCH, Coimbatore. However, she was declared dead upon arrival.According to the FIR lodged, "...inside the college campus as a part of Disaster Management class about 20 students were given training to jump down through an emergency exit window from the 2nd-floor classroom. CRPF jawan killed in militant attack
A CRPF jawan was killed while two others sustained injuries in a militant attack in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir today, official sources said. Militants opened fire on a CRPF party deployed on law and order duty at Achabal Chowk in Anantnag district, resulting in injuries to three jawans, the sources said. They said one of the injured jawans succumbed to injuries. The area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to track down the assailants, the sources added.

Japan PM meets rain disaster survivors, pledges more aid
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met today with survivors of devastating rains that killed at least 204 people in flash flooding and landslides, as the government pledged more aid. The toll from the record rainfall has continued to rise, as rescue workers dig through the debris and find the remains of dozens of people reported missing. Top government spokesman Yoshihide Suga said Friday that the toll was now 204 dead, with 28 people still missing. Around 73,000 rescue workers including police and troops "are working as hard as they can, with the priority on saving lives", he said. Industrial park blast kills 19, hurts 12 in southwest China
A blast in an industrial park in a southwestern province has killed 19 people and injured 12 others, China's official Xinhua News Agency said today. The blast occurred at the Yibin Hengda Technology Co, a chemical plant in an industrial park in the city of Yibin in Sichuan province at 6.30 pm yesterday, Xinhua said. Xinhua cited the Jiang'an county government as saying the fire was put out today morning and the injured were in stable condition. Blast at Cairo chemical site injures 12: army
A strong explosion at a chemical tank near Cairo airport in the east of the Egyptian capital has left at least a dozen people injured, the army has said. Maharashtra rains: Girl falls into nullah, dies in Yavatmal
A four-year-old girl today died after she fell into a nullah during heavy rains in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district, a senior official said. District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh said that Akansha Anil Gaikwad was playing on the road near a nullah, in Chikli Kanoba village of Ner tehsil, when she fell into it. The incident happened at around 1:30pm and the villagers, who found girl in the nullah some distance ahead, rushed her to the local hospital were doctors declared her dead on arrival, he said. This is the fifth monsoon-related death in the district since the rains began this year, an official said. Earlier, two persons in Pusad and one each in Wani and Kelapur tehsils were washed away by floods. The district has recorded 357.14 mm of water since June 1, officials said today. Fire on roof of Jammu Rajdhani coach, no injuries
A fire started on the roof of a coach of Jammu Rajdhani train near Sabzi Mandi station here tonight but no injury or casualty was reported and it was brought under control shortly, officials said. A call of fire incident involving the train was received by the Delhi Fire Services around 9.04 pm. "Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was controlled by 9.20 pm," an official of the Delhi Fire Services said. The fire had started on the roof of the B-10 coach where over head equipment(OHE) is located. "The fire started due to some dried inflammable item dropped on the OHE," the officer said. A railways official said that a cloth was dropped on the OHE from a bridge at the Sabzi Mandi station that caught fire due to the spark of the engine as it crossed the area. "The spark happened due to the obstruction between the locomotive pantograph and the OHE," he said. Afghanistan: 10 killed in flood caused by landslide
At least 10 people were killed after a landslide broke the banks of a natural dam causing it to flood in Panjshir province of Afghanistan.According to ToloNews, the incident occurred at 1am on Thursday in Has-e-Awal district of the province.ToloNews quoted the deputy provincial governor Mohammad Amin Sediqqi as saying, "In one village over 400 houses were either destroyed or damaged.""Two districts in the province have been cut off", adding "the number of casualties may rise," he further said.ToloNews quoted an official as saying, "An ice cap on a nearby mountain melted and triggered the deadly landslide, which in turn caused the flood."Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) has sent rescue teams to the area for search and rescue operations.
Rs 25,000 compensation to hit-and-run accident victim 'low': SC
The Supreme Court today said that compensation amount of Rs 25,000 which is paid to a victim of hit-and-run accident in case of death is "low" and a bill that proposes to raise this to Rs two lakh is "pending" before the Parliament. The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Bill, 2016, was passed by the Lok Sabha in April 2017 and it was thereafter sent to the select committee of the Rajya Sabha, which had presented its report on December 22, 2017. The apex court, which was hearing a matter concerning the issues of road safety in India, was told that the amount of compensation to the victim of hit-and-run accident was "abysmal". "Rs 25,000 is low. The proposal is to increase it to Rs two lakh. The Bill is pending," a bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said after a lawyer, assisting the court as an amicus curiae, raised this issue. Heavy rainfall has claimed three lives in the ancient capital of Nepal, Bhaktapur.The three people were buried after the house collapsed due to incessant rainfall, which continued for 24 hours.Heavy downpour has led to landslides and caving in, causing disruption in lives of common people.Speaking to ANI, Chitwan Traffic Police Chief Bedprasad Gautam said, "Caving-in has occurred in various section of the highway and number 1 bridge has titled and the road is functioning one- way.
