Japan flood: Death toll crosses 100

1 killed, 9 injured in separate road accidents in Amethi

One person was killed and nine others seriously injured in separate road accidents here, police said today. Sharda Prasad (45) of Ramapur-Tikari village was killed and two others were injured after their motorcycle was hit by a vehicle, they said The accident occurred on the Amethi-Pratapgarh road. They were taken to a community health centre where Prasad was declared dead, police said. In another road accident, at least seven people, including four women, were injured when two tempos collided with each other near Utelwa village on the Sultanpur-Lucknow national highway, they said. They were referred to a trauma centre in Lucknow after primary treatment, police said.

Two policemen and driver killed in road accident

Two policemen and the driver of the vehicle, in which they were travelling, were killed this morning when it met with an accident on National Highway 34 near Nakashipara in Nadia district, police said. According to Nadia SP Rupesh Kumar, the mishap happened in the wee hours when the vehicle, in which the policemen of Uttar Dinajpur district were travelling to Kolkata, met with the accident killing two policemen and the driver. Another policemen who was in the same vehicle was seriously injured and was undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, the SP said adding that the vehicle was travelling from Uttar Dinajpur to Kolkata on official work. "The cause of the accident is yet not known. Whether it has hit by any other vehicle needed to be find out because there is no eye witness of the accident. We are probing into it," Kumar said.

Woman dies in roof collapse

A woman died and two of her family members were injured when the roof of her house collapsed here, police said today. The deceased was identified as Santosh (65), a resident of Topkhana area of Ambala Cantonment. She was sleeping in her room along with her husband Shyam Lal and granddaughter Anchal when the roof of her house collapsed around midnight yesterday, the police said. She was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared her dead while her husband and granddaughter sustained minor injuries.

Schools to implement child safety guidelines from this session in Jaipur

With an aim to ensure safety of school children, all government and private schools in Rajasthan's Jaipur have been asked by the government to implement child safety guidelines from this academic session. The guidelines have been drafted by the Department of Child Rights in consultation with school principals here. A provision of child safety audit has also been made in 'Jaipur declaration-2018' which was prepared by the department in consultation with the principals of 20 government and private schools and with the feedback of parents as well as students, Shruti Bharadwaj, additional director of the department, told PTI. The initiative was taken after a seven-year-old boy in Ryan International School in Gurgaon was killed last year, she said. CAG faults CMDA over 2015 Chennai floods

The December 2015 floods here was a result of failure of CMDA, the city development authority, to check large-scale construction along waterways and illegal conversion of agricultural land and water bodies, CAG said. "Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority failed to check large-scale constructions along waterways, which choked waterways and altered land uses in metropolitan area,it said. Rescuers search for dozens still missing after Japan floods

Rescuers in southwestern Japan dug up more bodies today as they searched for dozens still missing after heavy rains caused severe flooding and left residents to return to their homes unsure where to start the cleanup. More than 100 people were confirmed dead in the disaster. Minoru Katayama, 86, rushed back to his home in Mabi city, in Okayama prefecture, and found his 88-year-old wife, Chiyoko, collapsed on the first floor. 2 killed after pickup rolls down into gorge

A pickup veered off the road and rolled down into a gorge on Chamba-Killar highway, killing two passengers and injuring the driver, police said today. The vehicle was on its way from Pangi to Chamba when the accident occurred last night. Raj Kumar (30), the pickup driver, was grievously hurt in the accident and referred to Chamba hospital, the the police said. A case has been registered, they added.

Flood-postponed EU-Japan summit moved to Tokyo

Tokyo will now host an EU-Japan summit on July 17 to sign a free trade accord after the Japanese premier cancelled the talks in Brussels because of deadly floods at home, the European Commission said today. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called off the trip this week to Belgium and three other countries as the death toll from flooding and landslides caused by record rains hit 100. Fire at snacks factor in Rajasthan

A major fire broke out at a private snacks manufacturing unit in Rajasthan's Bikaner district today, police said. However, no loss of life was reported, they said. The fire broke out at 'Bikaji Namkeen' factory in Gandhi Nagar Industrial Area and six fire tenders brought the flames under control, chief fire officer Roop Singh said. Bikaner Superintendent of Police Sawai Singh Godara said that a damage in boiler pipe triggered flames which gradually engulfed the factory. EAC nod to convert GMR's aviation SEZ into multi-product SEZ

: The Expert Appraisal Committee under the Union Environment ministry has accorded permission to convert GMR group's aviation SEZ into multi-product special economic zone at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here. According to the minutes of the EAC meeting held on June 25 last, the SEZ can now have industrial units, activities relating to aviation in addition to pharmaceutical formulation, gems and jewellery, electronic and commercial developments among others. GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited (GHIAL) cited poor response from aviation companies for setting up shop in the aviation SEZ as a reason to convert it into a multi-product SEZ. The infra major had last year said the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park spread in the layout of 253.85 acres had an occupancy rate of just 11 per cent over the last six year and if allowed it to convert into a Multiproduct SEZ, within 3-4 years it will be fully operational.
