Police, SDRF rescue 165 students in J-K's Shopian district

Police and the SDRF today rescued 165 students from a school in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir after they got trapped due to rising water level in Rambiara stream, an official spokesman said. Governor N N Vohra reviewed the flood preparedness with his advisor B B Vyas and officers from other departments. Vohra directed the divisional commissioner, Kashmir and all deputy commissioners of Kashmir division to establish control rooms and notify helpline numbers for the information of the public. "Police with the help of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 165 students of Govt Boys School Hirpora, Shopian who were trapped in the deluge because of flood in the river," the s said. Earlier in the day, on the directions of the governor, a team of officers from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department carried out a safety audit of the embankments of the rivers and Nallahs for any corrective action that may be required to be taken. 4 ITBP personnel lost lives in landslide in Arunachal

Four Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel were killed and six others injured after the bus they were travelling in was hit by a boulder near Likabali town in Arunachal Pradesh.The incident took place earlier in the day when the boulder, loosened by monsoon rains, rolled down a mountain and hit the bus carrying at least 20 personnel.The ITBP personnel who were critically injured in the incident have been sent to Dibrugarh in a chopper.This is the second landslide-related incident in Arunachal Pradesh within five days.

Centre accords calamity relief fund to 3 states

The Central government on Friday approved calamity relief funds to Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal, and Nagaland, who were affected by floods and landslides in the year between 2017-2018.Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh chaired a high-level committee meeting in the national capital for the central assistance to the three states.The committee approved the additional assistance from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) of Rs 179.91 crore (Rs. 66.77 crores for floods + Rs. 113.14 crores for drought - Rabi) for Andhra Pradesh, Rs 144.26 crore for Arunachal Pradesh and Rs 65.69 crore for Nagaland.The Union Minister for Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh, Union Finance Minister Piyush Goyal, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and senior officers of the Ministries of Home Affairs, Finance and Agriculture and NITI Aayog were present in the meeting.

Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, Chief of the Air Staff, visited Air Force Station Hakimpet here today. Plane crash: Vikhe Patil seeks case against UY Aviation owner

Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil today demanded that a case be registered against the "director" of UY Aviation, which owned the chartered plane that crashed in suburban Ghatkopar yesterday. "I have written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, demanding that a case be registered against Dipak Kothari, the director of UY Aviation, for being negligent and posing a threat to people's lives," Patil said. The senior Congress leader said an inquiry should be ordered against UY Aviation for "forcing" the two pilots to fly the aircraft despite the inclement weather. Media reports quoted the husband of pilot Marya Zuberi as alleging that the pilots were forced to fly though they were wary of the weather. "The Director General of Civil Aviation had certified that the aircraft was fit for a test flight. The accident shows there were lapses on part of (DGCA) officials too. Landslides after monsoon rains; 4 dead in Arunachal, road blockage hits Amarnath yatra

Rains lashed several parts of the country triggering landslides in some hill states, which killed at least four ITBP personnel in Arunachal Pradesh and affected the Amarnath pilgrimage in Jammu and Kashmir, as monsoon covered the entire length and breadth of India two weeks ahead of its schedule. Evening showers in the national capital caused the humidity level to shoot up to 90 per cent even as the mercury settled at a notch below normal. Odisha signs MoU with RIMES for enhancing early warning system

Odisha Government today signed an MoU with the Thailand-based Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES) for enhancing early warning system for effective management of disasters in the state, officials said. The MoU will help state government to integrate new generation digital algorithm-based technologies and best practices from 48 RIMES member countries with the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA), they said. The Mou was signed in the presence of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Odisha government wants to ensure zero casualties for all natural disasters and has taken up various initiatives for strengthening the early warning systems by implementing latest technologies and building partnerships with international agencies, officials said. Fire engulfs celebrated TV drama set in Istanbul: Official

A celebrated outdoor film set in Istanbul, used in a number of top-rating Turkish soap dramas, caught fire today but there were no casualties, local officials said. CCTV footage shows intensity of Mumbai air crash

A day after an aircraft crashed into an under-construction building in Ghatkopar here, CCTV footage has emerged showing the intensity of the impact. The footage shows the plane turning into a ball of fire amidst a deafening roar. Officials said the footage is from a close-circuit television camera installed in a building near the one into which the 12-seater Beechcraft King Air C90 aircraft crashed. The footage, however, does not give a clear picture of whether the aircraft burst into flames mid-air or whether it blew up on impact of the crash, an official said. Mumbai police, which has barricaded the site of the crash, said all stakeholders would be called in to share details as part of the probe into the air mishap. 4 ITBP personnel killed in landslide in Arunachal

Four ITBP personnel were crushed to death when a huge boulder, loosened by monsoon rains, rolled down a mountain and hit their vehicle on the Basar-Akajan road in Lower Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh today, police said. The incident occurred at around 2.30 pm about 5 km from Likabali, the district headquarters of Lower Siang, when they were on way to it from Basar in West Siang district, police said. The boulder rolled down the mountain slope and smashed the mini bus carrying 20 ITBP personnel. Four ITBP personnel died on the spot. So far, three bodies have been retrieved by a joint rescue team of the ITBP and the state police, who are being assisted by locals , Lower Siang superintendent of police Singjatla Singpho said. Rs 390 cr as central calamity relief to Andhra, Arunachal, Nagaland

The Centre today sanctioned nearly Rs 390 crore as additional assistance to Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, affected by natural calamities during 2017-18. The decision has been taken at a meeting of a high-level committee held here, an official statement stated. Put in place necessary air infrastructure, says HC

The Bombay High Court today emphasised on the need for putting in place adequate infrastructure for air safety while referring to yesterday's plane crash in the city that killed five persons. It said authorities concerned could either act now and put in place requisite infrastructure for air safety or continue risking lives of citizens as it has been "doing until now". The observations came while a bench of justices S C Dharamadhikari and Bharati Dangre was hearing an application filed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) seeking permission for installing some overhead cables for a metro rail junction here. One more dies in Assam flood, toll reaches 32

Assam floods today claimed another life taking the death toll to 32 with the overall situation worsening in some affected districts following rain. One person was washed away by flood water in Upper Assam's Charaideo district where the situation has worsened since yesterday due to incessant rain, a report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said. The total death toll has risen to 32, it said. A population of 67,976 are currently affected by the flood in six districts with Charaideo having the largest affected population of 35,429. The other five flood hit districts are Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj. In its yesterday's report, the ASDMA had said 50,334 people had been reeling under the flood. A total of 29 relief camps with 9,022 sheltered people are now functioning in the affected districts.
