Pradeep Rajput had survived a plane crash in 2007, claims neighbour

A neighbour of Pradeep Singh Rajput, one of the pilots killed in a plane crash in Mumbai, described him as a friendly person who, during one of their encounters, had narrated how he survived a crash earlier in 2007. Pradeep lived in Gold Croft Society in Dwarka's Sector 11 with his wife and a son, who was in the merchant navy. His neighbour, Anil Rajput said that Pradeep had been staying in the society for past one year with his family, and they had just recently shifted to the fourth floor of the same building. Anil remembered Pradeep as a friendly neighbour whom he occasionally ran into in the lift. Since both of them belonged to the aviation industry, they had a number of interesting things to talk about. His neighbour said Pradeep was quite experienced. He was a former pilot with the Indian Air Force who switched to commercial flying later. He used to fly only VIP chartered flights, he added. Rs 100cr flood mitigation programme for areas under GCC limits

The Tamil Nadu government today proposed a Rs 100 crore flood-mitigation programme for areas falling under the Greater Chennai Corporation limits. Chief Minister K Palaniswami informed the state assembly that during the northeast monsoon, certain areas, including those near Adyar, Cooum and Kosasthalai river beds faced flooding, and therefore the said proposal. Accordingly, the government would identify areas facing the risk of more damage and take up various works, including creating link channels to nearby lakes to facilitate free flow of water during rains, deepening various water bodies and create a flood-control system, he said. A sum of Rs 100 crore would be allocated in the current financial year for this purpose, he added. Mumbai plane crash: Maintenance company denies glitch in aircraft

Kanu Gohain, the Executive Director of Indamer Aviation on Friday lamented the 'unfortunate incident' of Mumbai plane crash, saying that the aircraft had undergone extensive repair work under them.Five people were killed after the chartered plane crashed near an under construction building on Thursday in Mumbai's Ghatkopar.Indramer Aviation was the company that was undertaking maintenance of the ill-fated chartered plane, and had cleared it for the test flight after it passed all the ground tests.Speaking to ANI, Gohain said that cause for the accident was yet to be ascertained."What caused the plane crash has not been found yet. Schools closed in JK'S Doda after heavy rains

All government and private schools up to class 12 in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir remained closed today as a precautionary measure after heavy monsoon rains lashed the region for a third successive day today, officials said. The heavy rains also triggered landslides at several places along the 110-km Batote-Doda-Kishtwar national highway leading to its closure, they said. The officials said all schools up to Class 12 remained closed in Doda district which recorded heavy rains since Wednesday. Manali-Leh National Highway blocked due to landslide, rains in HP

The Manali-Leh National Highway-3 was blocked today after heavy rainfall triggered landslide in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district, an official said. Efforts are underway to clear the highway, he said. Landslide reportedly occurred due to heavy rains in Marhi last night. 3,134 pigs & piglets have died of PRRS & CSF in Mizoram

At least 3,134 pigs and piglets have died in Mizoram due to outbreak of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF) diseases since March till date, an official said today. Joint Secretary in the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department, Dr Hmarkunga told PTI that the figure was collected from all the eight districts where the outbreak had spread. Hmarkunga said that at least 7,098 pigs and piglets have been taken ill till date. The outbreak has affected over 100 villages in eight districts, he said, however, adding that the outbreak has waned since the past three weeks.

Lunch break saves 40 labourers in Mumbai plane crash

At least 40 labourers had a narrow escape as they went for their lunch break minutes before a chartered plane crashed into an under-construction building in the bustling Ghatkopar area yesterday. Five people -- four crew members and a pedestrian -- lost their lives when the King Air C90 plane crashed into the crowded suburb at 1.11 pm. The labourers of the under-construction building where the ill-fated plane crashed, had gone away for lunch, which averted more casualties. Three construction workers received minor injuries in the incident and were admitted to a civic hospital. Fresh landslide blocks Jammu-Srinagar national highway

A fresh landslide blocked Jammu-Srinagar national highway late this afternoon, leaving hundreds of vehicles including those carrying Amarnath pilgrims to the base camps in the Valley stranded, a police official said. Heavy rains triggered the fresh landslide at Gangroo near Ramsu along the 260-km long highway - the only all weather road connecting Kashmir with rest of the country, and efforts are on to made it traffic worthy, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vishal Manhas told PTI. One killed, three injured in accident in Muzaffarnagar

One person was killed and three others were injured when their car collided with a stationary earth-moving vehicle on Delhi-Dehradun national highway, about 25 km from here, police said today. The accident occurred yesterday near Purkaji bypass. The victims were residents of Sangam Vihar, Delhi, and were going to Rishikesh when they met with the accident. Seven killed in accidents in Rajasthan

Seven persons, including two minors, were killed and 22 others injured in separate road accidents in Rajasthan today. Police said seven persons were killed in Paldi area in Sirohi district where a speeding car jumped the road divider and collided head on with a truck coming from the opposite direction on Sirohi-Sheoganj Highway. The deceased included two minors and as many women. In Bikaner, 20 persons were injured in a collision between a truck and a bus on the Bikaner-Jodhpur Highway. The injured are admitted to PBM Government Hospital in Bikaner, the police said.

Landslide blocks Manali-Leh highway

The Manali-Leh National Highway-3 has been blocked due to a landslide at Marhi, nearly 30 kilometres from Manali in Himachal Pradesh.Heavy rain in the area for the past 24 hours caused the landslide.The landslide happened late night on Thursday and came into light by early morning on Friday. The local administration was informed by the commuters at around six in the morning.Border Roads Organisation (BRO) officer Avril Jain confirmed the landslide and said that the road would be clear soon."The road clearing operation has started and would be done soon for the traffic. Nigeria: 9 killed in oil tanker explosion

At least nine persons were killed and five injured when an oil tanker collided with a car and exploded on a busy bridge, setting vehicles ablaze near Lagos city on Thursday.As per officials, the tanker caught fire at around 5 pm (local time) on the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, which is used by people residing in the outskirts of the city.A Nigerian government official told CNN that the death toll is expected to rise, as 54 vehicles were burnt due to the explosion.Emergency response teams arrived at the scene later, rescuing people who were trapped in the blaze."We are still battling this fire, and rescue teams are trying to access the bridge. Bali shuts airport after volcanic eruption

Bali closed its international airport following a volcanic eruption on the Indonesian resort island that sent thick smoke and ash billowing 2,000 metres into the air, an official said today. Ngurah Rai airport was due to be closed from 12:30 am IST to at least 4:30 am IST today after a pilot report detected volcanic ash as high as 23,000 feet following Mount Agung's eruption yesterday.
