Nigerian officials say nine people are dead after an oil-carrying tanker truck crashed and burst into flames on a bridge in Lagos. The Lagos state emergency management agency says in a statement that one of the dead was a child. Another four people were injured in the accident this evening, and 54 vehicles were burned. It is not immediately clear what caused the crash. The statement says fire, police and other authorities are on the scene amid efforts to clear the road of the destroyed vehicles. Local television footage showed emergency responders walking among the charred-white vehicles, some of them still burning inside. Lagos is Africa's largest city, with a population of more than 21 million people. Nigeria is one of Africa's top oil producers.

Several casuarina trees caught fire today at a farm house in Siruthavur near here, once a favourite retreat of late chief minister J Jayalalithaa, an official said. None were injured and there was no damage to the bungalow there, the fire and rescue service official said. "Casuarina trees approximately spread over an acre in the Siruthavur bungalow premises is on fire since late evening," he told PTI. Nearly 50 fire fighters were involved in the operation to put off the fire, he added. On the cause of fire, he said it was being looked into by the police. The farm house was a favourite retreat of Jayalalithaa who used to stay at the bungalow. The property had witnessed minor fire mishaps earlier too.

There has been no report of any loss of life in flood-related incidents in the past 24 hours and the overall situation has improved considerably in Assam, a report by state disaster management authority said. A total of 50,334 people are still reeling under floods as against 68,000 yesterday in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Charaideo, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of the state, the report by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said, adding that 36 relief camps, running in the affected districts, have provided shelter to 13,555 residents. He also said that the cause of the crash would be known after probe. Fadnavis spoke to officials of different agencies at the spot in suburban Ghatkopar in central Mumbai. Punjab Water Resources Minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria today said adequate arrangements have been made to tackle any flood like situation in the state during the monsoon season. A 30-year-old sanitation worker today died of asphyxiation after he accidentally fell into a septic tank of a house here, while cleaning it, police said. The incident occurred when Mahendran was cleaning the tank in a house on 100 feet road and suddenly fell into it. On hearing his screams, the inmates of the house rushed to the spot and found him dead, they said adding the body was later retrieved. Further investigations are on.
The Bombay High Court today granted bail to a Mumbai Fire Brigade officer, who was arrested in the Kamala Mills fire case. Fire Officer Rajendra Patil was arrested, along with others, following the blaze at two roof-top restaurants in the Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai in December last year. Justice A S Gadkari took note of the argument of Patil's lawyer's that though he had granted the fire-safety certificate to "1Above", one of the two restaurants, he could not have known that the owners would later carry out structural changes on the premises, in violation of fire safety norms. Patil had granted the certificate to "1Above" only a week before the December 29 incident, which claimed 14 lives. He was arrested under section 304, IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) for alleged dereliction of duty. The owners of both the restaurants were also among those arrested. A Delhi-bound Air India flight from Patna with 122 passengers onboard made an emergency landing today after it suffered a bird hit, an Air India spokesperson said. All the passengers are safe and are being boarded on another flight for Delhi, the spokesperson said. Flight AI 410 was bound for Delhi from Patna's Jay Prakash Narayan Airport at 12.40 pm. Moments into the flight, it suffered a bird hit and returned to Patna, the spokesperson said. The aircraft was being examined by engineers.
