7 killed, 28 hurt as bus falls into 500-ft deep gorge in TN

Seven people, including three women, were killed and 28 others injured when a bus fell into a 500-feet deep gorge in Tamil Nadu's hilly Nilgiris district, police said. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami expressed deep condolences and announced a solatium of Rs 2 lakh for the family of each of the deceased. In an official release, Palaniswami said six persons died on the spot, while another woman who was being treated at a hospital succumbed to injuries later. The chief minister said, following his orders, the district collector, superintendent of police, and fire and rescue department officials expedited the relief operations. Those injured have been admitted to various hospitals, he said. The state-run transport corporation bus, which began its journey from Coonoor, fell into the gorge when its driver was trying to avoid a pit on the ghat road. 22 killed in weather-related incidents; floods render several homeless in NE India

Twenty-two people were killed in weather-related incidents while torrential rains in northeast states rendered thousands homeless, even as a cloud of dust hung over vast areas of north India today, bringing down the air quality in Delhi to "severe" level. Fifteen people were killed in dust storms in Uttar Pradesh and seven in rain-related incidents in Assam, Tripura and Manipur. 4 killed, 2 injured as tipper falls into gorge in Chamba district

Four people were killed and two others injured when a tipper rolled into a deep gorge near Bhanera in Chamba district, about 400 km from here, police said. Three people died on the spot while one person succumbed to his injuries in a hospital at Chamba. The tipper carrying bitumen was on its way to Khajjiar from Chamba. The injured were identified as Surendra Singh (47) and Puneet Kumar (27). They were rushed to a hospital in Pathankot, the police said. In another accident, two private buses collided head-on near high court on Cart Road here. About a dozen persons were injured in the accident. The incident caused major traffic jam in the city. Meanwhile, a tourist bus on way to Delhi from Manali caught fire near Ria village on Manali-Nalagarh National Highway this afternoon. Panic gripped 53 passengers who hustled to come out of the bus and fifteen people received minor injuries. Fire tenders were immediately rushed to the spot, Fire officer Hitender Kanwar said.

Dust Pollution: Lt Guv orders to stop all civil construction activities in Delhi

Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Thursday ordered to stop all civil construction activities across the national capital from June 15 to 17 as part of emergency measures to bring down the severe dust pollution.The decision came after Lt Governor chaired an emergency meeting in view of severe dust pollution.Chairman of Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority, Bhure Lal informed to Lt. Governor that air pollution levels have reached severe category in the national capital which is mainly due to wind blowing dust from western parts of the country.Bhure Lal further informed Lt. Torrential rain in NE states leaves 7 dead, thousands homeless

Torrential rains in the past 48 hours have wreaked havoc in the north-eastern states, claiming seven lives in Assam, Tripura and Manipur, disrupting rail services and rendering thousands of people homeless across the region. In Tripura, the state government has sought assistance of the Army and the NDRF for evacuation and rescue operations in marooned areas. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who visited the flood-hit areas of Unakoti district yesterday, briefed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh about the "critical situation" in the state this morning, a senior official of the state administration said. Withdrawal of NDRF unit; Cong MP writes to Centre

Senior Congress MP Mullappally Ramachandran today shot off a letter to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, protesting against withdrawal of a unit of the National Disaster Response Force, set up at Kozhikode during the previous UPA regime. Referring to the loss of lives in the landslide in Kozhikode today, the former Union Minister said the North Kerala district is most prone to natural disasters like floods and landslides and requested that the unit be re-established. Rain fury: 19 die in Ker in 24 hours, monsoon toll rises to 43

Monsoon fury continued in Kerala, claiming 19 more lives in the last 24 hours as the toll in rain-related incidents today mounted to 43 since its onset late last month, official sources said. The government issued a red alert in northern districts-Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Palakkad, Kasargod and Malappuram- in view of heavy rain forecast till June 18. Five people were killed in a massive landslide while another died after falling into a river in Kozhikode today. Amit Shah calls off Tripura visit due to flood

BJP chief Amit Shah, who was scheduled to visit Tripura on June 18, has postponed the trip because of the flood triggered by heavy rains, a senior party official today said. "Shah had planned to present the BJP-IPFT government's performance card of 100 days during his visit but has suspended the programme due to the flood," said BJP's state general secretary Pratima Bhowmik. Shah would visit Tripura once the state recovers from the "crisis-like" situation, she said, adding that the BJP chief had asked the party leaders and workers to help the affected people. Soon after assuming office in March this year, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb had declared to unveil the government's performance card for 100 days as part of the party's commitment to deliver good governance and accountability. Inder Jit Singh assumes charge as Coal Secretary

Inder Jit Singh today took charge as Coal Secretary, according to an official release. The post fell vacant after the superannuation of Susheel Kumar on April 30, 2018, Coal Ministry said in a statement. In the interim, Mines Secretary Anil G Mukhim was holding the additional charge. "Inder Jit Singh assumed charge as Secretary, Ministry of Coal...," the ministry said. Prior to this, Singh was posted as Secretary (Coordination) in the Cabinet Secretariat, it said.

: Seven passengers were killed and 27 others injured, some of them seriously, when a bus fell into a 500-feet deep gorge near here in the hilly Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu today, police said. The driver of the state-run transport corporation bus was trying to avoid a pit on the ghat road when the mishap occurred at Mandada, about 10 km from here. Six people, including two women, were killed on the spot while a 29-year old woman died at a hospital here, police said. Of the 27 injured, nineteen people had been taken to the government hospital in neighbouring Coimbatore while others were admitted to the government hospital here. The condition of the bus conductor was stated to be critical, police said. The bus was proceeding to nearby Coonoor from here. Several parts of the Nilgiris district have been receiving heavy rains for the past few days.

Railways reinforces medical facilities on trains, stations

As many as 88 life-saving equipment, medicines and injections will now be available on all trains and stations, replacing the basic first aid box that is usually found on railway premises, a senior official said today. These include delivery kits, oxygen cylinders, laryngoscopes, catheters, syringes, tablets, splints, bandages of all shapes and sizes, ointments and even oxygen defibrillators, the official said. "The Supreme Court had formed a committee of AIIMS to examine the issue of providing emergency care to passengers on board trains and in their report, they have listed the equipment that we had to provide. We have complied with that and started providing the same to the passengers," the railway official said. He said that except the oxygen defibrillator which costs Rs 3-4 lakhs, all other medical supplies were being provided by the national transporter in a phased manner. NDMA conducts mock drill on flood preparedness in UP

As monsoon approaches Uttar Pradesh, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) today conducted a mock exercise to guage its preparedness for the recurring annual floods. According to Met officials, monsoon is likely to cover the entire state by end of June. The exercise was held in collaboration with State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), an official release said here. The simulation exercise was conducted in 23 flood-prone districts of the state at the same time to assess the preparedness of the state's machinery to handle the disaster, it added. The exercise helped improve the administration's capacity in mobilising resources and reaching out to the affected communities swiftly in case of an actual flood situation, it said. The NDMA has so far conducted more than 600 mock exercises for various disaster situations across the country, the release added.

Man, daughter killed in road accident

A man and his daughter were killed and three other members of the family injured when their car fell into a deep gorge in Rikhnikhal area of the district. Theaccident occurred at around 1 pm near Chakhuliyakhal area, about 22 km from Rikhnikhal market, when the car was on its way to Bironkhal village, Rikhnikhal police station incharge Sunil Rawat said, adding that the Delhi-based family was going to their village for a puja. The car fell into a 150 meter deep gorge, killing the man and his 16-year-old daughter on the spot. Three other members of the family including two women sustained injuries in the accident and were admitted in a hospital nearby, the police said.

4.5 magnitude quake hits Himachal Pradesh

An earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter Scale hit Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district this afternoon, meteorological department officials said. Tremors were felt in different parts of the state but no loss of life or property was reported. Tremors were felt around 3.45 pm and the magnitude of quake was 4.5 on Richter scale with epicenter in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, the local MeT office said.
