In a freak accident, a sudden surge in the voltage in the houses here led to the death of a man and injured four others today, police said. The incident occurred in Dabar village at 6.30 am, police official Nand Lal said. The deceased was identified as Satyaprakesh Bairwa (24), while the injured were identified as Rajendra Bagari (27), Ramesh Bagari (32), Rekha (14) and Manish (5). The deceased and the injured were staying in three separate houses in the same locality of the village, he said. The injured are undergoing medical treatment at a community health centre in Sultanpur town and their condition is stated to be normal, he added. The body was handed over to the family members after postmortem. The surge in the voltage was likely due to the damage in the local area power transformers caused by dust storms blown across the region in the last few days, the police official said.

Four trekkers, who lost their way while returning from the picturesque Dzukou valley, were rescued by a team of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA). The trekkers, who hailed from the Golaghat Commerce College in Assam, had gone to the Dzukou valley in Kohima district on June 5. They lost their way while returning through Jakhama yesterday, NSDMA officer on special duty Johnny Ruangmei told PTI. On receipt of information in the evening, Kohima District Disaster Management Authority, a wing of the NSDMA, sent an eight-member search and rescue team to the area. After almost four hours of rigorous search, the team brought them safely from the jungles last night, he said.

The United Nations Security Council called today for "unhindered humanitarian access" in Somalia, expressing concern about the risk of famine in the conflict-racked country. "The Security Council expresses deep concern about the humanitarian situation in Somalia, including the continued risk of famine and the impact of recent flooding," the council said in a statement adopted today. "The Security Council notes with concern that the fighting has exacerbated the humanitarian situation and calls on all parties to allow and facilitate full, safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access," it said. On the security situation, the council expressed "serious concern at the ongoing threat posed by A1-Shabab," the armed group that has been trying since 2007 to overthrow successive internationally-backed Somali governments. Jet Airways' Mumbai-Bhopal flight (S2895) developed a snag in one of its wheels after landing at Raja Bhoj Airport here tonight, an airline official said. All passenger were safe, Jet Airways Station Manager Malay Jain told PTI. The incident took place after the plane landed and was moving towards the taxi bay, he said. Nearly 160 passengers were on board the flight, he said. Jet's technical team was attending to the problem and the same plane will fly back to Mumbai, he added. He denied reports that the plane got off the runway after landing.
A 36-year-old man was evacuated today by the Coast Guard after he fell from the ladder of a merchant ship at Mumbai outer anchorage. A crew member of merchant vessel "MT Sri Vishnu", carrying crude oil, fell from the 15-feet long vertical ladder and suffered injuries, the Coast Guard said in a note. A medical emergency request was received by Coast Guard Maritime Rescue Co-Ordination Centre in Mumbai at around 5 PM and a medical evacuation process was initiated immediately, a Coast Guard official said. According to the note, the crew member, identified as Digvijay Singh, is suspected to have received fractures on left arm and collar bone. The official said Singh was evacuated successfully and handed over to the shipping company. He is undergoing treatment at hospital.
Air Commodore Sanjai Chauhan, who died last Tuesday in a Jaguar fighter jet crash, was today cremated in Jamnagar. Before the cremation, Indian Air Force officials paid their respects by laying a wreath on his mortal remains. Those who laid the wreath included Deputy Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal R Nambiar and Air Officer Commanding in Chief, SWAC, Air Marshal R K Dhir, said a defence release here. Chauhan, a recipient of Vayu Sena Medal and the Air Officer Commanding of Jamnagar Air Force Station, died on June 5 when his aircraft crashed in a field in Bareja village of Kutch district after it took off from the Jamnagar air base.

A Port Blair-bound GoAir flight with 167 people on board returned shortly after take off from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport here today allegedly after the aircraft suffered a bird hit. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) said the plane made an emergency landing at around 8.57 am and all on board were safe. According to the airline's spokesperson, the GoAir flight G8 101 made "a precautionary turn around and returned to Kolkata post take off owing to the bird hit". As a standard operating measure, the pilot decided to return to Kolkata airport for an aircraft inspection as prescribed by the manufacturer's manual, the airline spokesperson said in a statement. "The flight has been cancelled for the day and will depart tomorrow. All passengers have been duly informed and cared for. Heavy rain lashed the city last night and today, leaving several areas waterlogged and delaying local trains. While the city received pre-monsoon showers, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said monsoon has reached the Konkan coast. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it had taken precautionary measures, but there were reports of water-logging in Dadar, Parel, Cuffe Parade, Bandra, Borivali and Andheri. The civic body however claimed it received no complaints of water-logging. In view of the heavy rain warning over the week-end, municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta held a meeting with top officials of the MCGM and IMD and issued necessary instructions, the BMC release said. The aviation helicopter was shifting an injured Frontier Corps (FC) soldier from Kohlu area in Quetta, capital of Balochistan, when it was forced to make an emergency landing, the Army said.
