Three people, including a minor girl, were killed and 22 others injured"when their bus fell into a valley at Gaydari ghat in the district early today, a police official said. The victims, belonging to Navsari and Surat districts in Gujarat, were on a religious tour to Saptshrungi Devigarh, a site of Hindu pilgrimage in Nashik, when the driver of the private bus lost control over the wheels around 4 am, the official at Borgaon police station said. As a result, the vehicle skidded off the Borgaon- Nanashi road and fell into the valley at the ghat, located about 70 kms from the district headquarters, he said. The deceased, who were yet to be identified, included two women and a girl of about eight years of age, he said. The police rushed to the spot and admitted the injured people, including the bus driver, to the government hospitals at Borgaon and Ahava in the district, the official said. A case was registered in connection with the mishap, he added.
The Indian Coast Guard today said it has rescued nine crew on board a fishing boat that drifted off the Karwar coast in Karnataka. A Coast Guard ship was diverted to help the boat crew after it received a distress all from the fisheries authorities. Authorities say a male pilot was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after his helicopter crashed into a field on Sauvie Island in Portland, Oregon. The Oregonian/OregonLive reports the crash was reported around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday. Multnomah County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Bryan White says the pilot was the only person on board. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.
Odisha government has initiated steps for adoption of super technology for early warning system about lightning, which claimed over 450 lives last year, a senior official has said. The possibilities of early detection and warning system about lightning was discussed at a high level meeting held here yesterday, the official said. More than 450 people in the state lost their lives due to lightning strikes last year, chief secretary A P Padhi told reporters after the meeting. "The early warning system about lightning has shown positive results in some states and we will examine the utility and applicability of the system in our state for saving the life and property of the people from lightning," he said. A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck a remote, mountainous region in southern Iran today, injuring at least 31 people and disrupting power and communication lines, state media reported. It says the temblor rocked the town of Sisakht, some 700 kilometres south of Tehran, causing people to rush out into the streets. The town has a population of 10,000. Footage showed cracks in the walls of buildings. The semi-official ISNA news agency quoted Jalal Pouranfard, the head of provincial emergency services, as saying 18 people were transferred to medical centres and another 13 received treatment. Iran is prone to near-daily earthquakes as it sits on major fault lines. In November, a magnitude 7.2 quake hit western Iran, killing more than 600. In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 quake flattened the historic city of Bam, killing 26,000 people.
Four persons were killed and two injured in separate incidents of lightning strikes and wall collapse in Murshidabad district today, police said. The district experienced heavy showers for four hours this morning. Two persons were killed and two injured when lightning struck them while they were working in a field at Khargram area of the district, they said. In another incident of lightning strike, a 12-year-old boy was killed in Bharatpur area of the district while he was playing in a field, police said. One person was killed when portion of a wall collapsed and fell on him at Sagardighi area of the district, the police said.
Six pedestrians were killed after being run over by a speeding bus near Dadra village here, police said today. The incident took place yesterday night. While four members of a family were killed on the spot, four others were rushed to a hospital where two of them died, they said. Two injured persons have been admitted to a hospital. The Lucknow division of the Northern Railways has decided to install gates at 121 unmanned level crossings in view of the Kushinagar incident in which 13 children were killed at an unmanned crossing. "The work to close these 121 unmanned crossings will start from June and will end by September. Though the Railway ministry had decided to close all unmanned crossings by 2020, the work will now be completed by September this year," NR, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Satish Kumar said. He said unmanned crossings in Kanpur, Lucknow-Varansai and Lucknow-Prayag (Allahabad) routes will be closed by September. Though the April 26 incident in Kushinagar took place at an unmanned crossing that lies in North Eastern Railways, the NR has become alert after this mishap which occurred when a school van was hit by a speeding passenger train. At least six people sitting on a top of a bus were electrocuted in Chennari area of Rohtas district on Tuesday.The bus was carrying several passengers to a wedding. A 26-storey building has collapsed after a huge fire engulfed and destroyed it in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo. At least one person was believed to have died.As many as 160 firefighters in 57 vehicles responded to the massive fire at a building on the Largo do Paisandu street in the center of the city, reported CNN.The collapsed building, which reached more than 20 stories high, had been occupied by squatters. A 45-year-old man died and two others were injured after a fire broke out in a three-storeyed nail polish factory in outer Delhi's Mangolpuri today, an officer from the Delhi Fire Service said. The deceased was identified as Rajesh Gulati, who owned the factory along with his father. A call about the blaze was received at 4.15 pm and eight fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The fire was doused by 5.30 pm, he said, adding the second and the third floor of the factory were affected by the blaze. Three men, including Gulati, were present on the second floor of the building and had inhaled copious amount of smoke. They were rushed to a hospital, where Gulati was declared brought dead, the officer said. The other two are undergoing treatment, he said. The injured were identified as welders Chandan (41) and Lalit Kumar (40), the police said. Police have registered a case and are probing the matter. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) is due to inspect the 25.6-km-long section of Magenta line between Janakpuri West-Kalkaji Mandir from May 8 - 10, before it is thrown open to the public.The whole line, which is part of phase 3, is expected to open in mid May. Eight people were killed and 11 were injured after a bus collided with a passenger vehicle and deflected from its path in South Korea's Yeongam County.The local bus was carrying 14 workers when the 25-seat mini-bus collided with a SsangYong Korando SUV at South Korea's Yeongam County in South Jeolla Province, South Korea's Yonhap News agency quoted local police as saying.The bus passengers were majorly farm workers returning from a nearby farm when the incident took place.As per the local police, four more passengers were injured in the passenger vehicle.The rescue team has transported the injured to nearby hospitals.
