Seven people killed in road accidents in Telangana

Seven people, including two children, were killed and three others injured in two separate road accidents in Nizamabad and Gadwal districts of Telangana today, police said. A couple and their two children died on the spot after their car was involved in a collision with a lorry at Nizamabad this afternoon, a senior police official said. In another mishap, three members of a family, including two women, were killed when their car overturned after hitting a road divider near a toll plaza in Gadwal district at around 4.45 am, police said. Three other occupants were injured. The car driver seemed to have dozed off and lost control over the vehicle resulting in the mishap,they added. The injured have been admitted to hospital.

Two coaches of train detach after coupling breaks in C'garh

The coupling mechanism of two coaches of a Mumbai-Howrah train today broke at Saragaon station in Chhattisgarh's Jangjir-Champa district, causing panic among hundreds of passengers of the train and those crowding the platforms, officials said. They added that no passenger was injured and the impact of the coupling giving way was minimised because the train was at a slow speed and the loco pilot had applied emergency brakes immediately. The station falls under Bilaspur railway division, they added. "The incident of uncoupling of two coaches of the 12869 Mumbai-Howrah weekly superfast special occurred at 10am today. There is no injury reported to anyone and the train left for its destination after a delay of one hour," an official said. Truck spills watermelons on interstate, causing deadly crash

Watermelons that spilled from an overturned tractor-trailer on an interstate off-ramp in Philadelphia hit a car on the roadway below, causing a deadly crash. Police say the truck flipped as it exited from the northbound lanes of Interstate 95. The watermelons spilled onto southbound lanes of the interstate, hitting a car and causing the driver to lose control. A passenger in that car, 61-year-old Thanh Tam Nguyen, of Glenolden, was killed in the crash. The driver was hospitalized. The driver of the truck carrying the watermelons was not seriously injured.

US embassy security officer arrested after Pak car crash

Pakistani police today arrested a security officer of the US embassy for allegedly obstructing an investigation after an accident involving a diplomatic vehicle here that left two persons injured. The vehicle driven by the US embassy's Second Secretary Chad Rex Auburn hit a motorcycle last night, injuring the biker Nazakat Islam and his pillion rider. Police registered two FIRs today - one against Islam for reckless driving and causing collision with the embassy vehicle and the second against Taimoor Pirzada, the chief security officer of the US embassy, for physically obstructing and interfering with the investigation following the crash, officials said. The two riders sustained minor injuries and were later discharged from hospital. Earlier, Auburn was also taken into custody and shifted to a police station but was later released. Nutty issue: Singapore Airlines stops serving peanuts

Singapore Airlines said today it has stopped serving peanuts on its flights after a toddler suffered a severe allergic reaction, and following near-fatal cases on other carriers. The Singapore flag carrier joins other airlines including Qantas, Air New Zealand and British Airways who have stopped handing out peanuts as snacks to customers. The airline said in a statement it had stopped serving peanuts in all cabin classes in April, although other nuts -- including cashews, macadamias and almonds -- would still be given out in some classes. It did not give a reason for the move. The carrier last year launched a review after a three-year-old boy on board a flight from Singapore to Melbourne with his parents went into anaphylaxis -- a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction -- after other passengers opened snack bags of peanuts. West Bengal: 13 killed, 25 injured after nor'wester strikes

At least 13 people were killed and over 25 injured after lightning struck them during a nor'wester that hit different parts of West Bengal last night, a senior official of the state disaster management said today. Of the 13 , three each died in Nadia, Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas districts, and two each in Dakshin Dinajpur and Malda. "Most of them were outside their house and working in their fields while lightning struck them," he said. Among the four persons injured due to lightning strike in Purulia district, two of them were reported to be critical, the official said. Alerts were issued across all the blocks in the districts and necessary precautionary measures were taken, in view of the warnings issued by the weather department, he said.

Vadodara airport to get 2 new aerobridges

Two aerobridges will be operational soon at Vadodara airport, Airport Authority of India (AAI) chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra, said today. The AAI had started building these aerobridges last year, to ferry passengers directly from the gate to the aircraft, Mohapatra told PTI over the phone. "The commissioning of the aerobridges will enable the flights to park close to terminal building making it easier for passengers to board the flight without using the bus. This makes travelling easier for senior citizens, children, pregnant women and wheelchair-bound passengers," he added. This new terminal building at the city's Harni airport was inaugurated by prime minister Narendra Modi on October 22, 2016. Four killed after truck hits SUV in UP

Four persons were killed and three others seriously injured when an SUV carrying them was hit by a speedy truck near Kasimpur on the Banda-Tanda national highway in Amethi district, police said. The four passengers travelling in the SUV, including the driver, were killed after it was hit by a speedy truck, Station House Officer (Jais) Ravindra Singh said. The three, who were seriously injured, were rushed to a trauma centre (Lucknow) after a primary treatment at a district hospital in Raebareli, the officer added.

Landslide kills nine people in China

A landslide hit a village in northern China's Shanxi province today, killing nine people, according to media reports. The landslide hit Caijiazhuang village in Lishi district of Lyuliang city early this morning, state-run China Daily reported, quoting local publicity department. Nine people have been confirmed dead in a landslide in north China's Shanxi Province, the report said. More than 100 people have been dispatched for the rescue work, state-run Xinhua news agency added. The cause of the landslide has not been confirmed. Death toll in Kabul suicide blasts rises to 21: health ministry

Landslide in China kills 3, rescue underway for trapped

A landslide in northern China's Shanxi province has killed three people after a total of nine were buried underneath the falling earth. More than a hundred firefighters, rescue workers and medical staff have been sent to the scene, the Luliang municipal government said on its official social media account today. The landslide hit shortly before 5 a.m., and rescue efforts are underway for those who remain trapped. Indian-origin woman, grandparents killed in fire: report

An Indian-origin woman and her grandparents died and her two children were injured after a fast-moving blaze swept through their home in the US as they celebrated a relative's upcoming wedding, a media report said. Harleen Maggo and her paternal grandparents Ragvir Kaur-Kainth, 82 and Pyara Kainth 87, died in the tragic incident late Saturday. Maggo's two children, an 8-year-old girl and 6-year-old boy, were trapped inside the building as it burnt. MACT dismisses kin's claim over death of man in road accident

The Thane Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has dismissed a claim filed by a woman following the death of her husband in an accident in 2012. MACT member and district judge K D Vadane observed that the claimants were not eligible for any compensation as Nitin Shewale, had borrowed the motorcycle which met with the accident, from one of the respondents. Hence, Shewale was not a victim in terms of the motor accident claims, the judge said in his order on April 27. The claimants in the case were Shewale's 33-year-old wife, two minor children and mother, all residents of Pradhan Pada in the district's Murbad taluka. They filed the claim against motorcycle owner Vishal S Bhoir and Shriram General Insurance Company Ltd. They told the tribunal that on April 23, 2012 Shewale, a self-employed man earning Rs 3,000 per month, was riding the motorcycle on Kavahli-Saralgaon road. 5 hospitalised after inhaling toxic gases inside sewage plant

Five people were admitted to a hospital today after they inhaled toxic gases inside a sewage treatment plant of a prominent hotel in Lutyens' Delhi, police said. The Taj Vivanta hotel is located near Khan Market and its sewage plant is in the adjoining building. Around 11.30 AM, the five people were trapped in the plant and inhaled poisonous gases. They were not wearing the safety gear, police said. In a statement, the hotel said their staff immediately responded by activating "approved safety protocols" to alert authorities and provide medical assistance to those affected. A company spokesperson said: "The safety and security of our guests and employees is absolutely paramount. Our priorities remain with those affected; and we are providing full support to them and their families." The employees of a sewage company and the hotel staffers had gone to the sewage plant for some work. They inhaled the toxic gases and got unconscious, police said.
