Power outage sparks delays at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

Passengers at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport are facing long waits after a power outage temporarily knocked out its check-in systems. The outage that hit parts of Amsterdam today prompted authorities to briefly shut roads and a rail link to the airport on the outskirts of the Dutch capital. The airport says on its website that check-in systems were restored today, but warned passengers to check the status of their flights for updates. The airport says incoming flights "will be reduced in capacity" from 9-11 a.m. and that several departing flights have been cancelled or delayed. The Dutch power grid administrator, Tennet, says it is investigating the cause of the outage.

Like airports, rlys plans designated parking space for app based cabs

Railways plan to provide parking spaces for app-based cab services within station premises to enable passengers get their next mode of transport within minutes of their arrival. The Railway Board has directed its zones to prepare a blueprint to replicate such a model existing in some stations of Bangalore and present an action taken report in the next three months, a senior official told PTI. "Just like airports the plan is to have exclusive parking spaces for each app-based cab service. It is provided in 12 stations in Bangalore for Uber and Ola on open tender basis. Passengers can either book their cabs on their mobiles or we can have dedicated help desks which can help them book their rides. This will ensure seamless movement of traffic to and fro from stations," said the official. While across the country cab aggregators like Ola have signed MoUs with different railway zones to operate in designated stations, this move will ensure that all such service providers can bid for space .

3 killed, 3 injured in fiery crash in Los Angeles

A fiery crash in Los Angeles has left three people dead and three others critically injured. Authorities say two vehicles collided yesterday in South Los Angeles and burst into flames. Officials say an infant, a child and an adult all were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people including a child were taken to area hospitals in critical condition. Cellphone videos show bystanders running around the vehicles trying to help the screaming victims, but heavy flames kept them from reaching the people trapped inside. No other information was immediately available. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

HC asks for latest position on air safety from DGCA

The Delhi High Court has sought from the civil aviation regulator, DGCA, the latest position regarding air safety, probe into aircraft accidents and recruitment of flight operations inspectors. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar asked for the information after the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) claimed that it has been following all precautions to ensure flight safety in the country. With the direction, the court listed the matter for further hearing on August 2. The court was hearing a PIL alleging that private airlines are violating and circumventing mandatory provisions for air safety and air worthiness issued by the DGCA. The plea has also claimed that the regulator has no mechanism to effectively check the non-compliance and blatant violation of the provisions. Aircraft Il38 in Russia for overhaul, mid-life upgradation: Navy

The Indian Navy on Sunday responded to reports of its plane, Il-38, making a crash landing in Russia, saying that the aircraft was in the country for overhaul and mid-life upgradation."The aircraft is in Russia for Overhaul (OH) and Mid Life Upgradation (MLU). No Indian Navy crew was onboard during the sortie though they are present in Russia. The aircraft was on initial test flight with all Russian crew. The damage is being ascertained," the Navy said in a statement.On April 28, it was reported that the Il-38 was forced to make an emergency landing outside Moscow, following a chassis failure.The reports also claimed that there were seven people on board - four pilots and three technical specialists.

UP's Shamli deprived of clean drinking water

Due to the contaminated water of Shamli's Kairana Meat Plant, there is panic in the public with the wrath of Hepatitis C and cancer gripping people in the village.The villagers informed that more than 35 people have died in the last few days after drinking the contaminated water and about 70 percent are suffering from serious illnesses due to the same.The locals told ANI, "Around 35 people have died due to water-borne diseases but no action has been taken by the government as yet."Village head Irshad said,"There is a pond of about 35-36 bighas in our village, in which drainage is filled with all the filthy water. Building planned as Trump hotel catches fire

Eye of comatose patient nibbled by rat

The father of a comatose patient alleged that his son's right eye was nibbled by a rat at civic-run Bal Thackeray Trauma Care Hospital in Jogeshwari on April 23."We saw blood over his eye in the morning. We had seen rats in the general ward earlier, but we didn't witness the incident. He was admitted in the hospital with a blood clot in the brain, following a road accident," the father told ANI.The hospital administrator, however, denied the incident, claiming it as an 'alleged conspiracy' to malign their reputation.The incident took place when the patient in coma, Parminder Gupta, was shifted to the general ward from the ICU for two days.The condition of the patient is quite delicate at present.Further investigation is underway.

2 children among 4 killed as house catches fire in Jharkhand village

Four persons, including two children, were charred to death when a house made of hay caught fire during a storm at a village in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand today, police said. The incident occurred this evening when a plastic shed on an eatery at Manjhari village caught fire during the storm and got blown away to the adjacent house, which belonged to the stall owner, the police said. The burning plastic fell on the house which caught fire instantly, said officer-in-charge of Manjhari police station Vijay Bhusan Minz, adding that four persons, who were inside, were charred to death. The victims included the wife of the stall owner, their two children and a helper in the eatery, Minz said. UP CM takes up road safety issue with officials

3 killed in lightening strike in Bihar

Three persons, including two women, were killed and two others injured when lightning struck them in Purnea district, an official said. Lightning struck at four different places under Dhamdaha sub-division area of the district at around 3.30 pm, the Circle Officer of Dhamdaha, Amar Kumar Rai, said. Nine pilgrims from Rajasthan injured as bus overturns

Nine pilgrims from Rajasthan were injured when their bus overturned on Rishikesh-Gangotri national highway today, police said. The accident occurred at around 4 pm this evening, when the overspeeding bus carrying35 passengers from Rajasthan overturned near Fakot in the district, Tehri SSP Bimala Gunjyal said. The driver of the bus was trying to give pass to a vehicle coming from Chamba when he lost control over the bus and met with the accident, she said. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Narendranagar, where their condition is said to be stable, she said. Investigations are on but overspeeding is said to be the reason behind the accident, Gunjyal said. The driver of the vehicle is on the run, she added.

14 injured after house ceiling collapses in J-K

At least 12 women and two minor girls were injured when the ceiling of a house collapsed during a marriage ceremony in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, a police official said. The incident took place this afternoon at the house of one Mohammad Shafi at Azmabad village in Mandi area, he said. Shafi's daughter was getting married and mostly the women folk were present inside the house. "The women who were trapped under the debris were rescued by locals," the official said, adding that seven critically injured people, including two minor girls, were referred to district hospital.

ONGC says oil leak in TN fixed, PMK seeks closure of wells

Oil leak following burst in an underground pipeline near here was fixed promptly, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation said today while PMK demanded permanent closure of oil wells to avert deterioration of farm lands. An oil spill which affected farm land in their area was noticed by Kathiramangalam villagers yesterday and they informed government authorities including police officials. "Action was immediately taken and the leak was set right at Kathiramangalam. The well (to which the pipeline was linked) has also been closed," an ONGC official told PTI. On the cause of the leak, he said it cannot be spelt out at this stage and officials were seized of the issue. The leak was noticed by 4 pm yesterday and it was fixed immediately, he said. Two killed, one injured in road accident in Kota

Two people were killed and one severely injured after the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a speeding truck on the Mhamsha Mandi road here this evening, police said. The deceased were identified as Radhyashyam Bairagi (55) and Ramkumar Bairagi (50), both residents of Premnagar-II of Kota city, Anantpura police station ASI Babu Lal said. The son of Radhyashyam Bairagi, identified as Mukesh Bairagi, sustained severe injuries and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, he said. The truck driver fled soon after the accident, Lal said, adding that both Radhyashyam Bairagi and Ramkumar Bairagi had died on the spot. Their bodies would be handed over to the family after a postmortem tomorrow morning, the ASI said. A case under relevant sections was lodged against the unidentified driver of the truck and further investigation into the matter was underway, he added.

Nine killed in two road accidents in Gujarat

At least nine people were killed in two separate road accidents in Surendranagar and Rajkot districts today, police said. In the first accident, five persons lost their lives, while five others sustained grievous injuries when a dumper hit their car at Sardhar town near Rajkot, police said. The truck was going towards Bhavnagar when it collided with the car, police said. "Three persons were killed on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries at Rajkot civil hospital," inspector of Aji Dam police station, P N Vaghela said. Centre to give assistance for 8 projects in drought prone areas of Maha

The central government has decided to provide assistance to complete eight major and 83 minor irrigation projects in Marathwada, Vidarbha and other drought-prone areas of Maharashtra, an official statement said today. These projects would help in addressing the agrarian distress by creating an additional irrigation potential of 3.77 lakh ha. The estimated balance cost of these projects is Rs 13,651.61 crore, the Union Water Resources Ministry said in the statement. "The expenditure finance committee of the Union Finance Ministry appraised and accepted yesterday, the proposal of the Water Resources Ministry to provide Central Assistance for completion of balance works of 83 Surface Minor Irrigation (SMI) projects and 8 major/medium irrigation projects of Vidarbha, Marathwada and drought-prone areas of rest of Maharashtra," it added.
