The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded a compensation of Rs 1.75 lakh to the wife of a 75-year-old man killed in a road accident in Dadri, an official said today. The compensation will be paid to deceased Karan Singh's wife Shanti Devi, Senior Prosecution Officer Lalit Mudgal said, adding that the court refused to entertain a claim by Sashi Bhusan (40), son of the deceased, that he too was dependent on his father. The deceased was a resident of Mohalla Gautam Puri, in Dadri. Singh died after being mowed down by a tractor trolley on November 14, 2015, when he was returning home from work, the claimant said, alleging that the accident was caused due to negligent and rash driving of the vehicle. The deceased was the only source of income of the family, earning Rs 10,000 per month and his future income was bound to increase, the claimant said.
Two persons were killed on Saturday after a public toilet complex collapsed in Mumbai.A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot for rescue work in collaboration with the fire department.The public toilet complex, located at Saisadan chawl at Mumbai's Bhandup area,was approximately 25 years old and was not being maintained properly by the city's municipal body."Unfortunately in the morning the toilet wall and the roof collapsed, and 19 out of 20 toilets get submerged beneath their foundations," said Deputy Commissioner P. Akhilesh Kumar Singh.
An Alaska Airlines plane has made an emergency landing in Hawaii. Hawaii News Now reports the airline says Flight 145 was heading from Seattle to Hawaii last night when an oil filter bypass light came on in the cockpit. The airline says the pilots throttled down one engine of the plane and declared an emergency as they approached the islands. The plane with 157 people aboard landed safely in Honolulu. There were no reports of any injuries.
Two people today died after the wall and roof of a community toilet at a chawl collapsed in suburban Bhandup, police said. The incident happened at around 6am today and police officials identified the two deceased as Lobaben Jetwa (42) and Babulal Dewase (45). "A few people who were trapped under the debris were rescued by fire brigade personnel. Two of them were seriously injured and were rushed to hospital but they died while undergoing treatment," said Akhilesh Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone VII. He said that a case of accidental death had been registered and further investigation into the cause of the toilet collapse was underway.

Two girls were injured in a fire at an LED manufacturing unit in northwest Delhi's Jahangirpuri area this morning, a fire department official said. Muskaan, 14, and Payal, 12, have sustained 70 and 80 per cent burn injuries respectively, the official said. They are undergoing treatment at a hospital, he said. A call to the Delhi Fire Service was made around 9 am and three fire-tenders were rushed. The fire was doused within an hour.
A speeding van carrying 16 passengers rammed into a stationary truck on the National Highway 24 here early this morning, killing 12 people and injuring four, police said. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the deaths in the accident and directed the officials concerned to initiate steps for ensuring all possible help and proper treatment to the injured. The incident took place in Uchauliya when the overloaded Tata Magic van, on its way to Sitapur from Shahjahanpur, hit the truck from the rear side near a roadside eatery, Superintendent of Police S Channappa said. Nine people, including the van's driver Anup Awasthi (25) and helper Kishan (23) died on the spot, he said. Three of the seven injured who were rushed to a hospital in Shahjahanpur succumbed to their injuries later, the police said. A speeding van carrying 16 passengers rammed into a truck here today, killing nine people and injuring seven others, police said. The incident took place on the National Highway 24 in Uchauliya under the jurisdiction of Pasgawan police station. The driver of the Tata Magic van and the helper are among the nine people killed. The incident took place at around 6 AM. According to the police, driver Anup Awasthi, 25, and his helper Kishan, 23, died on the spot. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital in Shahjahanpur, he said. The police said that overspeeding could be the reason behind the accident. Efforts were underway to identity the deceased, the police added.

A mother-daughter duo and another person were killed after being hit by rubble falling from the hillside as a result of a landslide triggered by rain. The occupants of the car parked the vehicle and got down as a landslide occurred along the highway about 10 kms from here, District Disaster Management officer Devendra Patwal said today. However, as they were running to safety they got buried in the rubble falling from the hillside, he said. Two bodies have been recovered so far, the official said, the rubble was being removed from the spot. The deceased have been identified as Rakesh Rawat and Kavita. The rubble is being scoured for Kavita 's 3-year-old daughter Srishti, the official added.
The 2016 plane crash that nearly wiped out an entire Brazilian football team was caused by a lack of fuel, Colombia's civil aviation authority said today, following an extensive investigation into the disaster. It blamed the shortage of fuel on mismanagement by LaMia Airlines, a now-defunct Bolivian charter firm that specialised in flying Latin American football clubs. The probe was launched after the tragic crash in the Colombian mountains in November 2016, which claimed the lives of 71 people, including all but a handful of players from the Chapecoense team, from southern Brazil. Only six people survived, three of them Chapecoense players. The tragedy cut short the club's fairy tale rise from obscurity to the finals of the regional Copa Sudamericana tournament, in which they were to face Atletico Nacional of Medellin. At least three people were killed in an explosion at an illegal firecracker factory in Maharashtra's Beed district on Friday afternoon.The explosion occurred at 4:30 in the afternoon due to a short circuit. The slab of the factory fell down immediately, killing three people on the spot.Fire tenders immediately reached the spot to douse the flames.An investigation in this regard has been initiated.In a similar incident, 17 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a firecracker storage unit in Bawana area in New Delhi in January this year.
Three people were today killed after firecrackers they had stored in their house exploded, police said. Officials said that the incident, in which the roof of the house was blown up, happened at around 4:30pm today in Ashti tehsil in the district. Police identified the three persons who died in the incident as Sarfaraz Allauddin Sayyad (32), his mother Farzana Allauddin Sayyad (62) and his nephew Faizan Qayyum Sheikh (15). "Some people who sell firecrackers in the Daru Galli area of Ashti tehsil store these items in their homes. Firecrackers kept at this house exploded with a deafening sound and the roof of the house collapsed due to the impact," an official said. Fire brigade teams from Jamkhed and Ashti rushed to spot and doused the fire a couple of hours later, he said. Further investigations into the cause of the incident were underway, he informed.
A fire broke out in the hostel of the state run nursing training school here in the district today but no casualty was reported, fire brigade sources said. Three fire tenders fought for over an hour to control the blaze that broke out in two rooms of the hostel where 24 first year students used to stay. The authorities vacated the entire school after the fire was noticed at around 4 pm. The fire was suspected to have been caused by short circuit, fire brigade sources said adding the extent of damage was yet to be ascertained. The blaze also caused panic among the patients of the nearby hospital and their relatives, though no damage was done to it, the sources said.
A day after the horrific accident which left 13 students dead an unmanned level crossing in Uttar Pradesh's Kushihnagar, the Indian Railways on Friday revealed that a staggering 3,479 such unmanned crossings still exist on the entire broad gauge network.
More than 70 per cent of all unmanned level crossings (UMLCs) are in five railway zones, official data shows. These five zones - labelled by the national transporter as 'critical', as they have the most unmanned level crossings - have 2,556 UMLCs out of a total of 3,479 such crossings on broad-gauge across the railway network. The area falls under the North Eastern Railway zone headquartered in Gorakhpur and has 553 such UMLCs. However, officials said today that the level crossing in Khushinagar where the accident occurred was a low route, where trains don't travel frequently or at high speeds.
