Three people were killed and four others injured when a car collided with a truck in Lalganj area here, police said Tuesday. Asha Devi (65), her son Sujit (31) and her daughter-in-law Rani Devi (25) were killed on the spot in the accident that took place on Monday night, they said. The injured were rushed to a hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable. The truck driver fled from the spot, leaving behind his vehicle, the police said.

The Bombay High Court has sought to know from the Maharashtra government what measures it proposes to tackle "serious" issues like drought in the state. A vacation bench of Justices Ajey Gadkari and N J Jamadar was hearing a petition filed by activist Sanjay Lakhe Patil, seeking setting up of independent disaster management committees in each district of the state. Patil sought for implementation of the 2016 disaster management guidelines which listed several measures to be undertaken by the state government to tackle natural calamities and disasters, including drought. When the petition was heard on Monday, Patil produced records before the court to show that water levels in dams and other resources had gone down in the state's Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway was closed for traffic on Thursday due to a landslide in Ramban district that left over 1,500 vehicles stranded, officials said. The 270-km highway, the only all-weather road linking Kashmir to the rest of the country, was blocked by a landslide at Digdol area. As a result, over 1,500 heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) and 200 light motor vehicles (LMVs) are stranded at different points, the officials said. Senior Superintendent of Police J S Johar said men and machinery had been deployed to clear the area, adding that are a large number of people were stranded in traffic. The SSP said there would be no movement from Jammu to Srinagar on the highway until the debris are cleared. The highway had remained closed from May 9-11 due to landslides and one-way traffic was allowed on the highway, the officer added.

Three members of a family were killed while another was injured when the wall of an under-construction house collapsed following a dust storm here, officials said Tuesday. District Magistrate Prakash Rajpurohit said the three were sleeping on the terrace of their house when the incident occurred on Monday night. "The wall of the adjacent house, which was under construction, collapsed due to dust storm and the debris fell on the family," said Rajpurohit. Those killed have been identified as Naini Devi (50), her son Vinod (23) and daughter-in-law Komal (25). Komal was pregnant. All succumbed to injuries at a hospital.
