4 killed, 6 injured in Meghalaya accident

Four persons, including three women, were killed and six others were injured when the taxi they were travelling in was hit by a truck in Meghalayas Ri-Bhoi district today, police said. The accident took place at around 8 am at Mawpun village near Umroi on the Shillong By-pass, they said. "We have recovered the bodies of four persons from the accident site. Both the vehicles have been seized," a senior district police officer told PTI. The identities of the deceased are yet to be known, they said.

Thirty, including 27 children, killed as school bus plunges into gorge

Twenty seven children were among 30 killed when a school bus ferrying them back home plunged into a deep gorge near village Gurchal on the Nurpur-Chamba highway, about 100 km from the district headquarters at Dharamsala. The children were students of Ram Singh Pathania Memorial School, police said. Thirty persons, including 27 children, have lost their life, Himachal Pradesh Transport Minister Govind Singh Thakur said. The driver, 67-year-old Madan Lal, and two women teachers also died in the accident which occurred when the bus was on its way back from school, Kangra SP Santosh Patial said. Local BJP MLA, Rakesh Pathania, who was on the spot, said 27 bodies were recovered while two more had been spotted. At least 13 seriously injured persons were rushed to a hospital in Pathankot where one of them succumbed to injuries, an official said. VP, PM condole deaths in HP bus accident

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the loss of lives in a bus accident in Himachal Pradesh. "I am deeply shocked to learn about the tragic bus accident...my heart goes out to the family members of the deceased," Naidu tweeted. In a tweet, the PMO said Modi was deeply anguished over the loss of lives. "My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident," the PMO said quoting the prime minister. PM Modi condoles death of Kangra accident victims

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the death of people in Kangra bus accident which claimed lives of 29 people including 26 children.At least 29 people were killed and several injured on Monday after a bus of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial school fell into a deep cleft near Nurpur area in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.The Prime Minister Office (PMO) took to Twitter and said, "I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. Wild elephant kills farmer in C'garh

A wild elephant killed an elderly farmer in Chhattisagrh's Raigarh district, Forest officials said today. The incident occurred last evening in Purunga village forest under Chhal forest range when Roopsai Agariya was headed towards his paddy field, said Dharamjaigarh Division Forest Officer (DFO) ParanayMishra. Agariya came face-to-face with the pachyderm who chased and attacked him with its trunk, killing him on the spot, he said. On receiving information, forest and police personnel rushed to the spot and sent Agariya's body for postmortem. The kin of the deceased have been given an instant relief amount of Rs 25,000 by the Forest department, the DFO said. "The movement of a group of 14 jumbos has been reported in the area for the last few days. Therefore, the villagers have been advised to take precautions and stay alert while passing through jungles," he said. Delhi: 5 dead in two fires

Five people, including two minors, died in separate fire incidents in Delhi today, taking the toll in such cases to eight over the past 72 hours in the national capital. The Delhi Fire Services received a call around 6.30 am about the first blaze in Rajapuri area of Sultanpuri. Over two-dozen workers were sleeping in the first and second floors of the three-storey building when the blaze started. All, but four, escaped, an officer said. At least 10 fire tenders rushed to the spot, but the narrow alleys posed a great challenge before they could reach the site, the officer said. The fire fighters struggled for a couple of hours to douse the fire. It was running without permission in the residential area, a senior police officer said. Police took the injured ones to a hospital where they were declared dead. The deceased have been identified as Razi Mohammad (20), Shan Mohammad(17), Ayub (17) and Mehboob (18). Five injured in fire in Kalyan

Five people received burn wounds in a fire which broke out in a scrap shop near here this afternoon, Fire Brigade officials said. The fire, in Bhoirwadi area of Kalyan, is suspected to have been caused by LPG leak, they said. The injured were admitted to a civic hospital for treatment, they said. The blaze started in a scrap shop and spread to adjoining shops, leaving five people, all workers, injured, the officials said. The exact cause of the fire was still not known but preliminary probe suggests it was triggered by leakage from a cooking gas cylinder, they added.

12 cases of dengue in Delhi, 2 in April: report

At least 12 cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi so far this year, including two in the first week of April, indicating early spread of the virus carrying the vector-borne disease in the national capital. Of all the cases reported till April 7, six were recorded in January, three in February and one last month, according to the latest municipal report released today. The cases of vector-borne diseases are usually reported between mid-July and November-end, but this period may stretch up to mid-December. "Three cases each of malaria and chikungunya, have been reported, while in January none of the cases of both the diseases were reported," according to the report. There were no cases of any vector-borne disease till January 13. At least 10 people had died in Delhi due to dengue last year, according to the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), which tabulates data for the entire city. Lufthansa cancels 800 flights tomorrow in German airport strikes

German airline giant Lufthansa said it will cancel "more than 800" flights tomorrow as public-sector workers walk out on strike for more pay, hobbling major airports like Frankfurt. "Lufthansa must cancel more than 800 of its planned 1,600 flights tomorrow, including 58 long-distance services, because of the strike. The cancellations affect around 90,000 passengers," the group said in a statement today, adding that service would be back to normal Wednesday.

Alliance Air flight from Pathankot makes emergency landing at Delhi airport

An Alliance Air plane flying to the national capital from Pathankot made an emergency landing today at the Indira Gandhi International Airport here due to a mid-air technical glitch in one of the engines. The ATR 72 aircraft with 42 passengers landed safely at around 1.45 pm, an Air India official said. Alliance Air is the regional arm of the up-for-sale Air India. "The right engine of the aircraft suffered a technical glitch when it was on the way to New Delhi from Pathankot. This forced the pilot to seek an emergency landing of the flight, which was carrying 42 passengers on board," the official told PTI.
