Rahul condoles death of people in Bawana fire

Congress president Rahul Gandhi today condoled the death of people in the Bawana fire tragedy and wished a speedy recovery of the injured. "My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the fire at Bawana, Delhi. My prayers and thoughts are with you as you struggle to come to terms with this tragedy. I also pray that those injured make a speedy recovery," he tweeted. At least 17 people died in the blaze at a firecracker storage unit in Bawana yesterday and two others were injured.

Six relief camps set-up for displaced in Rajouri: J-K govt

In the wake of unabated ceasefire violation by Pakistan, the Jammu and Kashmir government has set-up six relief camps to provide shelter to border dwellers, a government official said today. "District administration in Rajouri has made necessary arrangements for establishment of relief camps in case of any escalation leading to likely evacuation from border areas. "Six relief camps are already functional and provided with all basic amenities," an official spokesman said. Deputy Commissioner Shahid Iqbal Choudhary and other teams led by senior officers conducted anextensive tour in affected areas, including Nowshera, Sunderbani, Doongi, Rajouri and Manjakote. They held a interaction with public informing them about rescue and evacuation plan as well as availability of relief camps in the region, he said.

UN appeals for nearly USD 3 bn to save millions in Yemen

The United Nations today made what it said was a record appeal for aid to Yemen, calling for nearly USD 3 billion in humanitarian relief for the war-torn country. The USD 2.96 billion will be used to respond to an ever- broadening crisis in Yemen, where war, looming famine and cholera have killed thousands and put millions of lives at risk. The appeal, made on behalf of UN agencies and humanitarian partners, came as 11.3 million people "urgently require assistance to survive", UN aid agency OCHA said in a statement. "A generation of children is growing up in suffering and deprivation," OCHA said. "Nearly two million children are out of school, 1.8 million children under the age of five are acutely malnourished, including 400,000 who suffer from severe acute malnutrition and are 10 times more likely to die if they do not receive medical treatment." Bawana fire: Factory owner sent to one day judicial custody

The owner of Bawana factory which was gutted in fire yesterday has been sent to one day judicial custody.The Rohini Duty Magistrate gave the order.Manoj Jain is the owner of the firecracker unit in Bawana where a massive fire broke out on Saturday evening killing 17 people and injuring two others.Meanwhile, Delhi Minister Gopal Rai has confirmed that an investigation has been launched in the connection."We have set up an investigation in the Labour Department. Centre relieves CISF chief O P Singh; to take over as UP DGP

The Centre today relieved CISF chief O P Singh for his cadre Uttar Pradesh, where he is expected to take over as the new Director General of Police (DGP). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued an order allowing a home ministry proposal for "premature repatriation" of Singh, a 1983-batch IPS officer. Low danger avalanche warning issued in J-K

A low danger avalanche warning was issued today for the next 24 hours in 16 districts of the state, an official said. "Low danger avalanche warning of level-1 exists in higher reaches of seven districts in Jammu, six districts in Kashmir and two districts in Ladakh during the next 24 hours," the official said. As per information received from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), low danger avalanche warning of level-1 exists in higher reaches of Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, Udhampur, Anantnag, Kulgam, Budgam, Kupwara, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kargil and Leh districts of the state, the official said. Enquiry into 22 coal blocks allocated between 1993-2005

The CBI has informed the Supreme Court that it has closed its enquiry into 22 coal block allocations, which were made from 1993 to 2005, with the approval of the chief vigilance commissioner. The probe agency, in its 18th status report filed before the apex court in coal block allocation scam cases last month, has said that it had registered 16 regular cases covering 21 coal blocks during the period 1993-2005. 4 killed, 9 injured in blast at a chemical plant in Vadodara

At least four workers were killed and nine others injured today in a blast at a chemical plant on the city's outskirts, a senior official said. The blast at a chemical plant of the GSP Crop Science Pvt Ltd led to a huge fire in the premises, a police official said. The blast occurred around 5.30 am in the filter plant of the company, located in the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) area at Nandesari near here. "Four of the firm's employees were killed in the mishap," Vadodara district collector P Bharthi said. The injured persons were admitted to different hospitals, she said, adding that two of the injured were reported to be serious. "We have ordered an inquiry into the mishap," she said. 2 killed, 13 injured in road accident

Two people were killed and 13 others injured when their tempo fell off a bridge in Banswara district of Rajasthan early today, a police officer said. The accident occurred when the tempo was on its way to Kherwa from Pipalkhoont, said Jawahar Lal, the sub inspector of Khamera Police Station. The driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell off the bridge from a height of nearly 15 feet, Lal said. Shankar Sarkuta, 48, died on the spot while a 20-year-old woman, Sona Dindor, succumbed to injuries in hospital, he said. The bodies were handed over to family members after post-mortem, he added.

Earthquake of 3.6 magnitude jolts Koyna region in Maharashtra

An earthquake measuring 3.6 on the Richter scale jolted areas near the Koyna dam in Maharashtra today, the MeT department said. No casualty or damage to property was reported so far. Tremors were felt in the Koyna region at 11.36 am today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The depth of the earthquake was 10 kms below the ground, said the IMD's report posted on its website. The Koyna dam area is around 190 kms away from the district headquarters.

Train hits dumper-truck in Jaipur, 1 injured

A dumper-truck driver was today injured when his vehicle collided with a moving train at a railroad crossing near Jodhpur in Rajasthan today. The incident occurred when the dumper carrying sand was crossing an unmanned railway crossing near Banar. The moving train Marudhar express- hit the dumper which left the driver critically injured and the vehicle completely damaged, a Government Railway Police official said. A measles outbreak is feared to have killed about 100 malnourished people in Indonesia's Papua, an official said Sunday, highlighting a health crisis in the country's easternmost province. A total of 69 toddlers have died in the remote Asmat region, said Papua military spokesman Muhammad Aidi, while reports on the ground suggest 27 people have died in an equally remote and mountainous district named Oksibil. "We have received reports from villagers that the outbreak is also happening in Oksibil district and our staff have confirmed that, but we still need to check how many people have died," Aidi told AFP. "Measles is not dangerous, it's a mild disease. But because those children are malnourished, they can't cope in that condition." Parcel coach of Gondwana Express derails in Mathura

Rail traffic was disrupted for more than four hours after a parcel coach of the Gondwana Express derailed between the Keetham and Farah stations last night, an official said. A parcel van of the Gondwana Express ran off the rails at 10.20 pm yesterday. No one was injured in the incident, Sanchit Tyagi, PRO, DRM office (Agra) said.
