A 19-year-old youth was killed and another person injured after their scooter was hit by a bus near Hadiabad on Phagwara-Jandiala road today, police said. The deceased was identified as Mani, resident of village Semi Patra in Jalandhar district. Harmanpreet (25), a resident of Sarhali village, was injured in the accident, they said. He was first rushed to a Phagwara hospital from where he was referred to a hospital in Ludhiana as his condition was critical, they said. "The bus driver fled after the accident. We have registered a case of causing death by negligence," Sadar SHO Inspector Lakhvir Singh, said.
Two people were charred to death in a fire that engulfed their car after it was hit by vehicle on a highway in Wazirganj area here, police said today. The accident took place late last night on the Moradabad- Farukhabad highway. Nirvesh (30) and his brother-in-law Dinesh (28) got trapped in the car and died in the fire, they said. Nirvesh's son Dev (10) managed to escape with minor injuries, police said. The matter is being investigated.

A Turkish passenger plane that plunged off a runway onto a cliff precariously close to the sea suddenly turned after a surge of power in one of its engines, pilots told investigators in comments published today. The Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800 plane had landed normally at Trabzon airport late on Saturday on a flight from Ankara but then went off the runway just metres (feet) from the waters of the Black Sea with its wheels stuck in mud. All 162 passenger and six crew were safely evacuated but the plane remains stricken on the side of the muddy embankment, with the aircraft now secured with a cable to prevent it from slipping into the sea. More than a dozen people were reportedly injured after a floor of the Indonesia Stock Exchange building collapsed in central Jakarta on Monday.Jakarta Post quoted an official as saying that the floor collapsed onto the ground level of the bourse's Tower 2.The floor collapsed a few minutes after the first trading session ended as hundreds of office workers were heading out for their lunch hour. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday sought a report on the incident where a journalist's dead body was transferred in a garbage van by the local police.Taking on to Twitter, Siddaramaiah said that he has asked the Additional Director General of Police (Northern Range) to probe the matter."I am pained to read this. A fire broke out at a plastic godown in outer Delhi's Narela area, an official from the Delhi Fire Services said today. No one was injured in the fire that took place late last night, he said. A fire broke out in the electrical meter box of a residential building here in the early hours today, an official said. Following the blaze, all 29 families residing in the seven-storey building, located near the Thane railway station, were shifted out, the city civic body's regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said. A 32-year-old woman suffered from suffocation due to the dense smoke following the fire which erupted around 3 am, he said. Two cars parked near the electrical meter box were also damaged, he said. The firemen and personnel of the disaster management cell along with local police rushed to the spot upon getting information and managed to douse the flames, he said. The woman who suffered from suffocation was admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment, Kadam said. Prima facie the fire was suspected to have been caused by a short-circuit, he said. A probe was on to ascertain the exact cause of the blaze, he added.

Tropical cyclone Ava made landfall on January 5, lashing the eastern part of the African island for 24 hours, with many rivers overflowing, roads cut off and bridges submerged. Twenty-two people are still missing while 161,000 others have been affected following the storms, the National Bureau for Risk and Catastrophe Management (NBRCM) said yesterday. The toll from Ava stood at 29 dead and 80,000 affected one week ago. Madagascar, one of the world's poorest countries, is regularly hit by cyclones.
