Hungary's Orban tells Trump cutting Russian energy would cripple economy

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn said Friday that Hungary will continue to source fossil fuels from Russia despite demands from his ally US President Donald Trump, and that he'd informed the president that dropping Russian energy would be a disaster for Hungary's economy. Hungary remains one of the only countries in Europe to continue purchasing Russian oil and natural gas following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. But Trump, an admirer of the long-serving Hungarian leader, earlier this month called on all NATO countries including Hungary to cease purchasing Russian oil, since he believes the Russia-Ukraine war would end if they did so. In comments to state radio on Friday, Orbn said he recently told Trump that that dropping Russian energy imports would be an economic disaster for Hungary. I told the US president ... that if Hungary is cut off from Russian oil and natural gas, immediately, within a minute, Hungarian economic performance will drop by 4 p

Turkish Airlines, Turkiye's national carrier, has announced plans to add 225 Boeing aircraft to its fleet. Ex-FBI Director Comey indicted on charges of lying to Congress, obstruction

James Comey has been charged with lying to Congress in a criminal case filed days after President Donald Trump appeared to urge his attorney general to prosecute the former FBI director and other perceived political enemies. Thursday's indictment makes Comey the first former senior government official involved in one of Trump's chief grievances, the long-concluded investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, to face prosecution. Trump has for years derided that investigation as a "hoax" and a "witch hunt" despite multiple government reviews showing Moscow interfered on behalf of the Republican's campaign, and has made clear his desire for retribution. Minutes after the former FBI director was indicted, his son-in-law Troy Edwards resigned as a federal prosecutor. Edwards quit his job "to uphold my oath to the Constitution and the country", he wrote in a one-sentence resignation letter addressed to Lindsey Halligan, the newly appointed acting US Attorney in Virginia'

Trump meets Turkiye's Erdogan as US weighs lifting ban on F-35 jet sales

President Donald Trump held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House on Thursday and signalled that the United States might soon lift its hold on sales of advanced fighter jets to Ankara. During Trump's first term, the US removed Turkiye, a NATO ally, from its flagship F-35 fighter jet programme after Turkiye purchased an air defence system from Russia. US officials worried that Turkiye's use of Russia's S-400 surface-to-air missile system could be used to gather data on the capabilities of the F-35 and that the information could end up in Russian hands. Trump started his two-hour meeting with Erdogan by offering hope that a resolution to the matter could be found during the leaders' talks. He needs certain things, and we need certain things, and we're going to come to a conclusion. You'll know by the end of the day," Trump said. The president added to Erdogan, And I think you'll be successful with buying the things" you would "like to buy. The presiden

Trump orders crackdown on 'left wing terrorism', targets Democratic donors

President Donald Trump has directed his administration to crack down on backers of what he dubbed "left-wing terrorism", naming two top Democratic donors as he alleged without evidence a vast conspiracy to finance violent protests against the government. Trump's directive put the FBI's Joint Terrorism Taskforce in the lead and said the effort would span agencies across the administration, including the Treasury Department, "to identify and disrupt financial networks that fund domestic terrorism and political violence". The pursuit of what the president said were the funders of "agitators and anarchists" is the latest instance of Trump using the power of his office to pursue his political rivals. When pressed by a reporter to name any possible targets, he suggested two of the Democratic Party's top donors billionaires George Soros and Reid Hoffman. "If they are funding these things, they're going to have some problems," Trump said on Thursday. Trump had threatened such an order aft

US economy shows surprising 3.8% growth rate after major revision of Q2 GDP

The US economy expanded at a surprising 3.8 per cent from April through June, the government reported in a dramatic upgrade of its previous estimate of second-quarter growth. US gross domestic product the nation's output of goods and services rebounded in the spring from a 0.6 per cent first-quarter drop caused by fallout from President Donald Trump's trade wars, the Commerce Department said Thursday. The department had previously estimated second-quarter growth at 3.3 per cent. The first-quarter GDP drop, the first retreat of the US economy in three years, was mainly caused by a surge in imports which are subtracted from GDP as businesses hurried to bring in foreign goods before Trump could impose sweeping taxes on them. That trend reversed as expected in the second quarter: Imports fell at a 29.3 per cent pace, boosting April-June growth by more than 5 percentage points. Consumer spending rose at a 2.5 per cent pace, up from 0.6 per cent in the first quarter and well above the
