Kerala launches 'Jyothi' to ensure education for migrant workers' children

The Kerala government has launched a comprehensive initiative aimed at ensuring access to education for the children of migrant workers. Titled "Jyothi", the programme seeks to bring all children of migrant workers aged 3 to 6 into the anganwadis while ensuring those aged 6 and above are fully integrated into public schools, a CMO statement said here on Wednesday. Migrant workers form an essential part of Kerala's workforce, with over 35 lakh workers contributing across various sectors, it said. Many live in the state with their families, making it imperative to extend Kerala's legacy of universal and free public education to their children as well. The initiative also focuses on fostering cultural and educational inclusion, it said. This project marks a crucial step in advancing the welfare and empowerment of migrant workers and reaffirms the Kerala Government's commitment to inclusive development, the CMO statement added.

Education system plays a key role in preparing youth for the country's future and the government is working on modernising it, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday. Addressing a gathering at the YUGM conclave, he said his government's goal is to "Make AI Work for India". "We have to work to make India best in world in every future technology," he said, adding there was a need to modernise the country's education system to meet the needs of the 21st century. Modi also noted that the gross expenditure on R&D was only Rs 60,000 cr in 2013-14 and it has now been increased to Rs 1.25 lakh crore. It is crucial that the journey from idea to prototype to product is completed in the shortest time possible. The trinity of Talent, Temperament and Technology will transform India's future, he said. India's university campuses are emerging as dynamic centres where Yuvashakti drives breakthrough innovations, he added.

Education infrastructure is a multi-dimensional concept that is beyond just developing brick-and-mortar structures, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Tuesday. 6.5 mn students failed class 10, 12 in 2023, even more in state boards: MoE

More than 65 lakh students did not clear class 10 and 12 boards last year with the failure rate being higher in state boards than national boards, according to Ministry of Education (MoE) sources. An analysis of class 10 and 12 exam results of 59 school boards, including 56 state boards and three national boards, revealed that more girls appeared in class 12 exams from government-managed schools but it is opposite in private schools and government-aided schools. However, across school management girls are outperforming boys by a big margin. The pass percentage is also in favour of the girls by more than six percentage points. "Around 33.5 lakh students of class 10 did not reach next grade. While 5.5 lakh candidates did not appear, 28 lakh failed. This is one of the cause for low retention rate and Gross Enrolment Ration (GER) at higher secondary level," a source said. Similarly, around 32.4 lakh class 12 students did not complete the grade. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday hit out at the Modi government over the state of education in the country, and said India shall ensure justice for its students in 2024. "More than 'Amrit Kaal', we need 'Shiksha Kaal' for India," he said in a post on X. "In 2024, India shall ensure NYAY for our students from the Modi Government, for its report card on 'Education' is marked with gross Failure," he said citing the Annual State of Education Report (ASER). Quoting from the report, he said "56.7 percent of 14 to 18-year-old students in rural India can't do class 3 math and 26.5 percent of this age group still cannot read a class 2 level text fluently in their regional language". He also noted that 25 percent of youth in the 17-18 age group have discontinued education, mostly due to "lack of interest". The education sector has emerged as the most targeted industry for cyber attacks, accounting for more than 7 lakh detected threats in April-June 2023, according to a study. The Punjab government has appointed 1,378 security guards for all senior secondary government schools, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said on Wednesday. Chairing a programme at a local government school, Bains said these security guards would take care of the safety of students and also ensure they do not leave the school premises during study time.
