CBSE not to award overall division, distinction in class 10, 12 board exams

The Central Board of Secondary Education will not award any overall division or distinction in class 10 and 12 board examinations, a senior official said on Friday. The board will continue the practice of awarding marks in each subject and it is for the higher education institution or employer concerned to calculate the aggregate, if required, the official said. "No overall division, distinction or aggregate of marks shall be awarded. Also, if a candidate has offered more than five subjects, the decision to determine the best five subjects may be taken by the admitting institution or employer," CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said. The education sector has emerged as the most targeted industry for cyber attacks, accounting for more than 7 lakh detected threats in April-June 2023, according to a study. The substantial number of attacks underscores the increasing vulnerability of educational institutions to cyberattacks, the study said. The manufacturing industry stood second, reporting 3.29 lakh threats, and was followed closely by professional services with 3.28 lakh threats, the study by malware analysis la, SEQRITE Labs stated. Biden administration is moving toward a narrower student loan relief

The Biden administration is moving toward a narrower student loan relief plan that would target specific groups of borrowers those with soaring interest, for example rather than a sweeping plan like the one the Supreme Court rejected in June. The Education Department on Monday released a draft of new federal rules paving the way for a second attempt at student loan relief. The proposal targets groups that are seen as especially vulnerable, focusing on those who owe so much, or make so little income, that they otherwise may never repay their loans. Though full details are likely months away, the department says it wants to cancel some or all student debt for: borrowers whose balances exceed what they originally owed; those who have loans that entered repayment 25 or more years ago; those who used loans to attend career-training programs that led to unreasonable debt loads or insufficient earnings; those who are eligible for other loan forgiveness programs but did not apply. A day after West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu accused him of trying to "destroy" the higher education system in the state and running a "puppet regime" in universities, Governor CV Ananda Bose on Saturday warned of a much bigger action at midnight. As the clock was nearing midnight, a Raj Bhavan official said Bose had "signed two confidential sealed letters", one for the state secretariat, Nabanna, and another for the Centre. On the content of the letters, the official said "it would be disclosed later". "The governor signed two confidential letters tonight, one meant for Nabanna and the other for Delhi," the official added. "You will come to know the content of the letters later," the official told PTI, hinting that the subject could be on the recent war of words between the governor and the state government. Some 500 int'l students in limbo after Canadian college revokes acceptance

At least 500 students, including Indians, have been left in limbo after a college in Canada's Ontario province revoked their admission offers a month before the start of school, according to a media report on Thursday. Some of the students were already in Canada when they were informed their offers had been withdrawn, CBC News reported. Some 500 international students recently received an email from Northern College in Ontario informing them that their admission offers for this coming school year had been revoked, the report said. Among the students was Ashley, who had already paid her registration fees and booked her flight from Punjab to Toronto when she found out just over a week ago that she was no longer accepted to Ontario's Northern College. "It was very heartbreaking for me. It had a huge impact on my lifestyle," the report quoted Ashley as saying. Ashley, who doesn't have a last name, received her acceptance letter in February to study healthcare administration at ...

'India must revamp education system to make globally employable workforce'

India needs to revamp and improve its higher education system to take advantage of the declining working age population in developed countries like the US and European nations, former NITI Aayog vice chairman Arvind Panagryia said on Wednesday. "The global picture... what is happening really is that the populations in most of the countries are ageing, and as a part of this working age population -- 15 to 64 -- is declining in most of the major countries. It's going to decline in China, the United States and European nations," he said. India is really going to be the only large country aside from Africa, which would be contributing positively to the working age group of the world, he said at the release event of the report titled 'The Rise of India's Middle Class'. Citing the United Nations Population Division numbers, he said, India would be adding something close to 150 million individuals in the working age population category 15 to 64 by 2040. Given the shortages that could occu

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said the AAP government will be seeking parents' feedback on how to further develop the education system. He was speaking after inaugurating a new branch of School of Specialised Excellence (SoSE) in north west Delhi's Bawana. He said the school has been dedicated to children of rural Delhi. "This country gave me a very good education. I want to return this favour by giving the best possible education to every child out there. Soon we will seek feedback from parents about how we can develop the education system further," Kejriwal said. Bawana's B R Ambedkar School of Specialised Excellence has 50 classrooms, eight laboratories, two libraries, lifts, staff rooms and offices. Speaking at the event, Delhi Education Minister Atishi noted, "Even the best private schools are not as good as Delhi government schools in the present times.
