Humanity, agnostic, secular et al: Options several WB colleges offering students in religion column

At least 50 of colleges in West Bengal, including a few in the city, have added 'humanity', 'agnostic', 'secular' and 'non-religious' options in the religion column of online admission forms for students who are unwilling to disclose their faith. This allows students applying for undergraduate courses in these colleges to keep their religious beliefs private, an official of the city's century-old Bethune College said. The decision was taken after several degree course aspirants started questioning the need to declare their religious identity while seeking admissions to colleges. "We found that many applicants had been identifying themselves as non-believer in the option where they were supposed to mention their religion," said an official involved in the admission process at the college. 1 killed, 17 injured in 3 Kabul blasts

At least one person was killed and 17 others wounded in a series of blasts in Kabul on Sunday.Three IED bombs detonated amid the Eid al-Fitr celebration in the capital, reported Tolo News"The first blast targeted a bus carrying students of the education university and killed one shopkeeper and wounded at least 17 others," Nusrat Rahimi, a spokesman for Ministry of Interior Affairs said. Afternoon naps can boost kid's happiness, IQ: Study

An afternoon nap can boost happiness as well as improve behaviour and academic performance of children, a study has found. Researchers from and the University of California (UC) Irvine in the US conducted a study of nearly 3,000 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders aged 10-12. The study, published in the journal SLEEP, showed a connection between midday napping and greater happiness, self-control, and grit; fewer behavioral problems; and higher IQ. "Children who napped three or more times per week benefit from a 7.6 per cent increase in academic performance in Grade 6," said Adrian Raine, from University of Pennsylvania. "How many kids at school would not want their scores to go up by 7.6 points out of 100?" Raine said. Over 1.43 lakh students have registered on DU admission portal

Over 1.43 lakh students have registered on the Delhi University's admission website till Saturday, the varsity said. The university started online registrations on May 30 and the process will end on June 14. The first cut-off list is likely to be released on June 20. Till now, 1,43,732 students have registered and 64,773 have made payments, the varsity said. Out of the total number of registrations, 41,647 aspirants are from the unreserved category, 10,647 from other backward classes, 9,388 from schedule castes, 2,020 from schedule tribes and 1,133 from economically weaker sections (EWS). This year, the varsity has effected a 10 per cent increase in seats for the EWS and there will be a rise of close to 6,000 seats, taking the total number of seats for undergraduate courses to 62,000. There will be separate cut-offs for students belonging to the EWS category. Education Minister holds up rationalisation policy for transfer of vocational teachers

Punjab government has put on hold the rationalisation policy for transfer of vocational teachers till further orders, Punjab government said in a statement on Saturday."Education Minister Om Prakash Soni has taken this decision after objections registered by leaders of the Vocational Teachers Union during a meeting with the minister. Besides this, some Members of Legislative Assembly have also written to the minister to review the policy before its implementation," it added.Om Prakash Soni took this decision after long discussions with the union leaders. Sports University in Patiala to be operational from September 1

Make students aware of Indian Constitution: Gehlot

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday laid emphasis on making students aware of the Constitution of India from school days. He said the preamble of the Constitution should be printed at the beginning of school textbooks so that the feeling of responsibility towards the Constitution could be developed in students. Sharing his views at a 'yuva chintan shivir', organised by the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) in Bhilwara, Gehlot said every section of society had the freedom of expression. St Stephen's College row: 3 teachers approach Delhi HC

Three teachers of St Stephen's College have approached the Delhi High Court against the inclusion of a member of institution's Supreme Council in the interview panel for selection of Christian students. The three teachers who are members of the college's governing body -- N P Ashley, Abhishek Singh and Nandita Narain -- challenged the decision taken by the Supreme Council at its meeting on March 12. According to the decision, an additional Christian member nominated by the Supreme Council would be a part of the interview panel in respect of admission of Christian students in all subjects. The St. Stephen's teachers were represented by -- Sunil Mathews, Sabah Iqbal Siddiqui and Babita -- who argued that the decision of the Supreme Council went against the constitution of the college. Stephen's College expressly prohibited interference of the supreme council in the administration of the college. The Centre on Saturday dismissed apprehensions over the three language formula in the wake of the draft new education policy and said there was no move to impose any language on anyone."Only a report has been submitted on the new education policy. TN parties cry foul over national policy on language formula

Parties in Tamil Nadu including the DMK Saturday strongly opposed the three language formula's continuation proposed in the draft National Education Policy alleging it was tantamount to "thrusting" Hindi and wanted it junked. Cash strapped Jammu University receives 100 crore grant

The cash-strapped Jammu University on Saturday became one of the ten universities to receive a grant of Rs 100 crore under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, for scoring a whopping 3.51 points on NAAC."Jammu University, with an A+ grade, has received accreditation of 3.51 points by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Based on the score, HRD has decided to give a sum of Rs 100 crore each to at least 10 universities. Out of the total sum, we have already received the first instalment. The focus of our universities will be to bring excellence in teaching and research," University Vice-Chancellor Manoj K Dhar told ANI.This is the second time the university has been granted funds under the holistic scheme of RUSA. Jammu University, which has been selected for Rs 100-crore funding under the Centre's Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyaan (RUSA) to promote excellence, has set up three centres for entrepreneurship and skill development. Two MP schools used as beedi leaves godowns, probe ordered

Two government-run schools in Madhya Pradesh are being used to store Tendu leaves even as the institutes are scheduled to reopen soon after vacations. Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.The leaves, which are used for manufacturing beedis, are being stored in two schools in Madiyado and Rajpura villages in the Damoh district of the state."No such order has been passed by the office of the District Election Officer that Tendu leaves be stored in schools. The schools are reopening from 10th and this would disrupt the studies," said B S Rajput, Block Education Officer, Damoh.He added that proper investigation would be carried out about who gave the orders for converting the schools into Tendu leave godowns.

New Draft Education Policy calls for overhauling of education structure, RTE expansion

Maths made mandatory in 'best of four' subjects for admission to BA (H) in Economics at DU

Admission officials and student counsellors of Delhi University were flooded with queries on Friday about Mathematics being mandatory in the 'Best of Four' subjects for BA (Hons) in Economics. Many angry parents, who were present at the first Open Day, questioned admission officials why Mathematics was made a mandatory subject in the 'Best of Four'. Till last year, if a student had 50 per cent in Mathematics, he could apply for BA (Hons) in Economics, but this year it has been made mandatory for 'Best of Four', which means it has to be part of the top four subjects, aggregate of which will be considered for admission. "Why was it not done last year? Why was it done this year?" questioned a parent. Admission officials told them that for the 'Best of Four', one language subject, Mathematics and combination of best two other elective subjects are necessary. DU admissions: Students face technical glitches during online registration process

Delay in receiving OTP and non-functioning online calculator were the issues students faced when they tried to register on the Delhi University's online portal, which went live on Thursday. The DU commenced its online registration process at 8 pm on Thursday and said within 24 hours, 1,01,811 students had registered on the portal. However, on the first open day at the Delhi University, several students and their parents complained that the online calculator, which is a new feature introduced on the portal this year, was not functioning properly. "After logging in and keying in my child's marks, I chose the suggestive online calculator to calculate the best of four aggregate, but it picked up random marks and gave a wrong percentage," said a parent.
