The Supreme Court Friday threatened contempt proceedings against Maharashtra government officials for "virtually overriding" its order staying 10 per cent quota to students of economically weaker sections (EWS) in admissions to post graduate medical and dental courses in the 2019-20 academic year. A vacation bench comprising Justices M R Shah and A S Bopanna also extended till June 4 the deadline for concluding the admission process asking the Maharashtra government to refresh the merit list after excluding the EWS category students. Students' union president of a Delhi University college was found hanging at his home in Nanakpura area of the city on Thursday, said police, who suspect it to be a case of suicide. However, no suicide note was recovered from the room where the body of Utkarsh Sharma, a third year student of BA (Hons) Political Science at Ram Lal Anand College, was found, police said. A senior police officer said Sharma lived with his parents at a government quarter. His family left for their hometown in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday morning. When they made calls to Sharma his phone went unanswered. Worried, they called up his elder brother, who stays in Palam, and asked him to check on him. When he reached home, he found his brother hanging, the officer said. Police suspect it to be a case of suicide and are probing why he took the extreme step. The Madras High Court Thursday dismissed a petition seeking to stay the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) to be held on June 8 and 9, observing that a person who aspires to become a teacher must be competent enough to clear the exam. Justice N Sathish Kumar rejected the plea of R Sakthivel, a resident of Krishnagiri, seeking to quash clause 11 of the February 11, 2011 TET notification assigning a maximum of seven years validity for TET certificate. The petitioner submitted though the National Eligibility Test (NET) and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) were also qualifying examinations similar to TET, the first two certificate have life time validity. Limiting the validity period of TET certificate was burdening the candidates and complicating the selection process, he said pleading for permanent validity for the TET certificate.
