More than half of New Zealand's public schools closed their doors on Wednesday amid a mass walkout by teachers over pay and conditions. The ministry of education estimated that almost 60 per cent of schools were closed as some 50,000 teachers staged a "mega-strike". "We didn't want to be on strike, but we did it for the future of education in Aotearoa (New Zealand)," the country's largest education union, NZEI Te Riu Roa said in a statement. "We hope the government heard us - they must take bold and urgent action to fix this." With an estimated half million students affected, parents rallied to make alternate plans as teachers gathered for the latest in a series of protests, this on the eve of the government's annual budget release. The educators are asking for better overall pay and warning that burnout means many leave the profession just years after starting their career.

The Centre has extended the last date for admission of students for post graduate courses in states to May 31 in a bid to fill up the remaining vacant seats for the academic session 2019-20. A public notice issued by the Union Health Ministry said also said no candidate, who has already been admitted will be permitted to resign from allotted course and college for admission against vacant seats. On Tuesday, the Health Ministry had asked the Medical Council of India (MCI) to consider extending the last date for PG medical admission in states following which the issue was examined by the Board of Governors (BoG). Attacks on schools in Afghanistan tripled in 2018, surging from 68 in 2017 to 192, the United Nations agency for children said in a report, as the Taliban and other extremist groups in the war-torn country continue to wage a campaign of violence against softer targets. The Delhi University has decided to put the marksheets and other academic documents of students seeking admission to its colleges to forensic test this year. The varsity took the decision in the run-up to the start of admission process from Thursday. The University gave the direction to various colleges for forensic test of applicants' documents Tuesday after a meeting of its admission committee. The varsity will also provide colleges a list of empanelled agencies from where they can have the documents checked forensically. The varsity's admission committee, however, is yet to finalise the agency to hold the entrance tests for admission to its various courses, said officials, attributing it to the delay in the start of the admission process. The Delhi BJP Tuesday urged Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to direct the AAP government to withdraw its direction to stop funds to 28 Delhi University colleges, fully or partly funded by it, until governing bodies are formed. Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta said it is unfortunate that Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia directed the higher education secretary to stop funds to these colleges. Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit appointed Vaidehi Vijayakumar as Vice-Chancellor of the Mother Teresa Women's University at Kodaikanal. Purohit, who is also the Chancellor of the University, said Vijayakumar would hold office for a period of three years. Vijayakumar had served Anna University and several overseas universities including Ryerson University, Canada as professor and has presented 266 papers at international level research and academic events, a Raj Bhavan release said. The Delhi University has directed all colleges of the varsity to carry out forensic analysis of documents submitted by students during the time of admission in order to avoid a case like that of former DUSU president Ankiv Baisoya who allegedly submitted fake marksheets. The varsity is also mulling over having smart identity cards for students. The DU's admission process is likely to begin by May 30. "Till now, different colleges had different identity cards and there was no uniformity. From this year, the identity cards will look similar but have the name of the college stamped on it. It was also found some colleges were issuing identity cards after six months of a student getting admission, so it was felt that smart ID cards be introduced," an official said. A court here Tuesday awarded life imprisonment to a tutor for sodomising over 25 minor boy students over a period of six years. Ramiz Raja was convicted under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act by the POCSO court-3. Magistrate Rajesh Kumar awarded life imprisonment to the teacher under the POCSO act. "Raja sodomised the students who used to go to his home for tuition classes. He made video clippings of the crime and had been asking the students to bring money for him," the counsel of one of the victims, Aslam Khan, said. He circulated some clippings on social media and parents of one of the victims saw it, following which an FIR was lodged in February 2017. Besides Raja, a private school owner, Sarwar Alam, was also booked in the case but he was acquitted by the court. The counsel said that Raja sodomised more than 25 minor students between 2011-17.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration Tuesday announced a 47-day summer vacation from June 1 in government and recognised private schools up to higher secondary level falling in summer zone of Jammu division. According to an order issued by the School Education Department, these schools shall observe summer vacation from June 1 to July 17. However, the teaching and non-teaching staff along with the head of the institutions shall report for duty on July 16, it said. Any default on the part of private schools in observance of the calendar of summer vacation so authorised shall attract strict action under rules, it said.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is set to undergo a revamp from August with the duration shortened and scores mentioning the best sections of an individual's test if the exam is taken more than once. The Educational Testing Services (ETS), known for conducting the global TOEFL and GRE tests, is working on making changes in the test in sync with the changing demands of the educational institutions. The Aligarh Muslim University has cancelled the entrance examinations for the Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLISc) and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programmes which were held on May 23 and 26 respectively. AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof Tariq Mansoor ordered the cancellation of the entrance examinations Monday evening after a racket was busted following the arrest of four people allegedly involved in leaking the question paper of the MBA entrance test held on May 26, an AMU release said Tuesday. Those arrested include a clerk of the university who has been described as the mastermind of the racket.
