Stalin condoles death of JNU student

DMK chief M K Stalin Saturday expressed grief over the death of Jawaharlal Nehru University student Rishi Joshua, a resident of Vellore district in Tamil Nadu. Joshua allegedly committed suicide Friday by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in a study room at the university, police said. Stalin also cited deaths of two other students in the past and urged the state government to develop an institutional framework to protect its students who migrate for higher studies. "The government has to develop institutional framework to protect students facing various issues in other states," he said in a statement. Even in the past, Stalin said, AIIMS student Saravanan Ganesh (2016) and Delhi University college student Sharath Prabhu (2018), both residents of the state, died mysteriously. Report finds Ohio State doc abused 177, officials were aware

A now-dead Ohio State team doctor sexually abused at least 177 male students over nearly two decades, and university officials knew what he was doing and did little to stop him, according to an investigative report released by the school Friday. Dr Richard Strauss groped, ogled or otherwise took advantage of young men from 1979 to 1997 nearly his entire time at Ohio State while treating athletes from at least 16 sports and working at the student health center and his off-campus clinic, investigators from a law firm hired by the university found. The report on Strauss, who took his life in 2005, could cost Ohio State heavily by bolstering the lawsuits brought against it by a multitude of victims. The findings put Strauss in a league with gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar of Michigan State University, who was accused of molesting at least 250 women and girls and is serving what amounts to a life sentence. Faridabad govt college's internal complaints committee is not active: Haryana Women Commission

A day after a professor and two other employees at a government college in Faridabad were suspended over allegations of sexual harassment, the Haryana Women Commission Friday found its internal complaints committee to deal with such matters is not active. The complainant had alleged that an assistant professor, a peon and a laboratory assistant would befriend girl students at the time of admission and later they would target those who had to reappear for exams, promising to help them. St Stephen's college row: AC, EC members of Delhi University write to V-C

Members of Delhi University's Academic and Executive Councils Friday wrote to the varsity's vice-chancellor, saying the decision of St Stephen's college to include a member of Supreme Council in the interview panel for students "will compromise with the academic integrity in the admission process". The letter addressed to Professor Yogesh Tyagi was written by Executive Council members J L Gupta and Rajesh Jha, Academic Council members Seema Das, Richa Raj, Sudhanshu and Pradip Kumar, and Finance Committee member Rajpal Singh Pawar. U to introduce MA in Defence & Strategic Studies

The Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) here has decided to introduce MA (Defence and Strategic studies) under its newly opened National Security Studies department and MA (Tribal studies). TheU, a Central university will create an additional 10 per cent seats in each programme in diploma, bachelors and PG level courses exclusively for economically weaker section (EWS) category candidates, a release said here on Friday. Plea in HC for payment of salaries of EDMC, North MCD teachers and doctors

A plea was moved in the Delhi High Court Friday seeking directions to the municipal corporations of north and east Delhi to disburse the salaries of March and April to the primary teachers and doctors employed by them. The application by NGO Social Jurist contended that while the teachers have not been paid for these two months, in February they received meagre amounts like Rs 4 and Rs 8 as salary after deduction of tax. The NGO, in its plea filed through advocate Ashok Agarwal, also said the residential doctors of Hindu Rao Hospital have gone on a pen-down strike since Thursday in protest against non-payment of March and April salaries. The application, which is likely to be listed for hearing on May 21, was filed in the NGO's main petition highlighting the non-payment of salaries of teachers employed by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation and North Delhi Municipal Corporation. Maratha students welcome Maha govt's SEBC quota ordinance

Maratha students Friday welcomed the Devendra Fadnavis government's decision to amend the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Reservation Act, 2018 to provide reservation to them in post-graduate medical courses. The Maharashtra Cabinet Friday gave its approval to promulgate an ordinance in this connection. The students, however, said their protest would continue till they get joining orders from the Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell. Cabinet approves promulgation of ordinance on Maratha quota

The Maharashtra Cabinet Friday gave its approval to promulgate an ordinance to amend the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Reservation Act, 2018 to provide reservation to Maratha students in post- graduate medical courses. The cabinet also gave its approval to reimburse the fees to the candidates from the general category, who will be affected following the promulgation of the ordinance. 2 students find abandoned newborn, hand it over to hospital

Two college students played good samaritans by handing over an abandoned week-old boy baby to the government hospital here after they found the newborn on a road, police said Friday. The students - Sathyadharan and Chandrasekhar - were walking down the road Thursday night, when they heard the baby crying. They saw the baby wrapped in a cloth and placed on the roadside, the police said. The college-goers alerted the ambulance service, and they picked up the baby and took it to the hospital. The doctors, upon examining the baby, found it to be in good health, hospital sources said. The students won the appreciation of the public and the hospital staff for their good deed. Police have registered a case and are in search of the woman who abandoned the newborn.

St Stephen's college row: Staff association to hold protest on Friday

The staff association of St Stephen's college will hold a protest on Friday against the inclusion of a member of institution's Supreme Council in the interview panel for selection of students. The protest call prompted college authorities to put up a notice signed by Principal John Varghese on Thursday, saying there should be no "disturbance of working environment" in the college and those doing that will be dealt within the Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules. The college has also banned the entry of media persons in the premises. Teachers said the CCS rules apply to bureaucrats and not to them.
