Alcoholism, substance abuse leads college students to a life of distress, claims study

A new study has claimed that college students, if subjected to even one among negative habits such as heavy drinking or substance abuse, can end up living a life of mental distress, lack of sleep, low grades and poor lifestyle choices."We used a robust data-mining technique to identify associations between mental distress in college students with substance abuse, sleep, social behaviors, academic attitude and behaviors, and GPA (short-term and long-term as reflective of academic performance)," said Lina Begdache, an Assistant Professor at the Binghamton University, where the research was conducted."Positive behaviors such as abstinence from substance use, studious attitudes and responsibility toward work and family are reflective of a brain chemistry profile that supports mood and maturation of the prefrontal cortex of the brain. JNU extends deadline by three days for applying for admissions

The Jawaharlal Nehru University extended the deadline by three days for applying for admissions to the varsity to help students, officials said Monday. Sources said the date was also extended since the server was working a little slow due to high number of applications. The dates for applying for application submission and registration for JNU Entrance Exams (JNUEE) and Combined Entrance Examination for Biotechnology (CEEB) were extended from April 15 to April 18, they added. The deadline for application fee payment has also been extended from April 16 to April 19. HC laments growing corruption among education officials

The Madras High Court Monday observed there is a growing trend of corruption among higher authorities in the state education department and stressed the need for the vigilance and anti-corruption departments to investigate them. It also asked authorities to verify details of properties of teaching and non-teaching staff in government schools. "There is a growing trend of corruption amongst the higher authorities in education department. "Thus, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Department must conduct investigations against the authorities of the education department in the event of any inputs or otherwise," Justice S M Subramaniam said. The head of a kindergarten in China has been detained for allegedly sexually assaulting a 4-year-old girl, official media here reported on Monday. Maha: 5 held, 2 wanted for SSC paper leak in Bhiwandi

Five persons have so far been arrested in a SSC paper leak in Bhiwandi in Maharashtra's Thane district, police said Sunday. Among those arrested are two private coaching class owners while two others involved in the racker are on the run, an official said. "The Algebra, Geometry, Science I and II and History papers of March 11, 13, 15, 18 and 20 were leaked by the accused. Around a dozen students, including ten girls, who got the leaked papers on WhatsApp are also being interrogated," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bhiwandi) Ankit Goyal told PTI Sunday. He said the police would write to the Pune-based Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education about these students once the probe is over. A high school Muslim student's hijab was pulled off allegedly by a schoolmate who also hurled anti-Muslim slurs during a fight in the US, prompting authorities to arrest her, according to a media report.
