Two teachers were attacked with acid by an unidentified motorcycle-borne person on Thursday when they were returning home from school on a two-wheeler, police said. The victims were identified as Archana Meena and Hemlata Meena. Archana suffered burns on her back and was rushed to government hospiTal here, while Hemlata Meena was discharged after primary treatment, they said. Hemlata and Archana are posted at the government secondary school and government primary school respectively in village Gopalgarh in Chamu under Balesar subdivision of Jodhpur and belong to Sawai Madhopur district. Parents of children of a private school in South Delhi Thursday staged a protest alleging that authorities had cut-off electricity supplies in classrooms after they refused to pay the increased fees. The 12 per cent fee hike, which the parents alleged was implemented by K R Manglam School in Greater Kailash, despite the high court's order not allowing the same. However, school principal Sangeeta Arora said the high court order on fee hike is not applicable to their school as it is built on a private land and not on Delhi Development Authority land. "It is informed that the HC order referred in your mail pertains to schools that have come up on land allotted by DDA or other governmental agencies. Our school has come up on private land. The HRD Ministry on Thursday appointed vice chancellors to three universities after the Election Commission gave its nod as the Model Code of Conduct is in place due to the Lok Sabha elections. A group of former NIT Kurukshetra students have urged the college administration to relax hostel rules which according to them put "uncalled restrictions" on girls. The group, which has members from 21 batches of the premiere institution, has written a letter to the management. "The rules are uncalled restrictions which demonstrate the deeply rooted gender prejudice and hence our engagement with the institution we are grateful to and therefore would like to see progress, not regress," the letter read. "Our Constitution allows the girls of the age our college is seeking to 'confine' the power to choose their elected representatives and determine the fate of our country. Taking note of Tamil Nadu government's submission that suprlus teachers in schools run and aided by it cost the exchequer Rs.444 crore annually, the Madras High Court bench here Thursday ordered a freeze on fresh appointments. A bench comprising Justices N Kirubakaran and S S Sundar also directed aided schools to implement bio-metric attendance for students as well as teachers to ensure there was no likelihood of boosting the students' strength. The judges directed that the government should not approve any appointment in the private aided schools till the surplus teachers under the same management were exhausted. They, however, made it clear there was no prohibition for approval of teachers in cases where orders had been obtained from the court. The CBSE has mandated introduction of Arts subject for all classes from the upcoming academic session and advised schools to introduce few cooking classes as part of "culinary art" for classes 6 to 8. According to a senior official, every school shall compulsorily reserve a minimum of two periods per week for art education. The board has recommended that in addition to the four major spheres such as music, dance, visual arts and theatre, the students of classes 6 to 8 should also be introduced to culinary art. "The exposer will help students learn the value of nutritious food, about the crops and spices grown in India, how oil is extracted from various seeds and good agricultural practices," the official added. The pass percentage in Delhi government schools for class 11 has touched 80 per cent for the first time since 2010, according to statistics. The results of the annual exams of all classes (other than class 10 and 12) in Delhi government schools conducted centrally by the Directorate of Education (DoE) were declared on March 30, 2019. The statistics takes into account figures from 2010 onwards. While 71 per cent students of class 11 passed their exam in 2017-18, it has improved to 80 per cent in 2018-19. From 2015-16 onwards, the pass percentage in this class has been around 72 per cent as opposed to 63 per cent in 2014-15. In 2018-19, it touched 80 per cent for the first time, the statistics revealed. Similarly, in class nine, the pass percentage has remained almost the same as previous year.
