Delhi to get 2 new universities
In a step towards strengthening higher education, the Delhi government has proposed two new universities in the national capital.

The AAP government allocated over Rs 15,000 crore to education sector for 2019-20 in its budget tabled in the Delhi Assembly on Tuesday. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in his budget speech said the allocation to education is around 26 per cent of the total budget. "In the previous years the allocation for the education had been around 24-25 per cent of the total budget," Sisodia said. Allocation for entrepreneurship plans, introduction of family business curriculum, setting up of a teachers training university and an applied science university are among the various initiatives announced in the budget. "A digital learning scheme will be started in which students will have access to tablets. Around Rs 9 crore has been allocated for it. Students who score more than 80 per cent in class 10 will also get tablets," Sisodia said. The AAP government presented a Rs 60,000 crore budget for 2019-20 and said it is "two times more" than the one presented in 2014-15.
Master of Arts in STEM launched by King's College and Wipro
Wipro Limited and King's College London on Tuesday announced the launch of enrollment process for the first Master of Arts programme in STEM Education in Britain.The degree programme starting in September is designed to be a year-long programme for full-time students and a two-year course for part-time students.The MA in STEM Education will welcome students seeking formal training and the skills to drive educational change in an increasingly technological and science-rich world.The course will be taught by academic staff of the Centre for Research in Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CRESTEM) in the School of Education, Communication and Society at King's College London, and is aimed at education professionals and policy makers.The programme will focus on essential and practically-oriented STEM knowledge as well as emerging fields such as environmental education and will take a blended learning approach, involving face-to-face as well as online learning ...

Indian student dies in pool incident in Rhode Island University
In a tragic incident, a student from India died at a campus pool in the University of Rhode Island (URI) in the US. Suhail Habeeb, a graduate student in physics from India, died on Sunday following an incident that occurred in a Tootell Physical Education Center pool on the Kingston Campus, the University said. The University is "saddened by the recent loss of one of our community members, Suhail Habeeb, it said. He had been enrolled at the University since Fall 2016. Staff from Campus Recreation, URI Police Department, and URI Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to Tootell late afternoon on Sunday. URI Police and EMS were dispatched and arriving units found lifeguards performing CPR on Habeeb. He was transported by EMS to a local hospital where he was later identified and pronounced deceased. The University extended its deepest condolences to Habeeb's family, friends and colleagues.
32,455 students admitted to schools under EWS category in Delhi
With the admission of 32,455 students in 2018 under the economically weaker sections (EWS) and disadvantaged group (DG) category, the private unaided schools have seen three times more admission compared with schools under the three municipal bodies.
Clash between students inside BHU campus in Uttar Pradesh
A clash broke out on Sunday between student inmates of Birla A and Birla C hostels in Uttar Pradesh's prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU).Students were seen pelting stones, while the police were trying to dispel the crowd.Speaking to ANI, Dinesh Singh, SP of the city said: "Birla hostel has two campuses-A and C, where senior and junior students on Sunday had a fight over a heated argument. The minor rift later turned into a scuffle, due to which the police had to intervene."In a similar incident, in April 2017, a clash was witnessed between the junior doctors of the general surgery department at Sir Sundar Lal hospital in BHU campus, in which a student suffered a head injury.
JU students lift gherao, Pro-VC leaves campus after 72 hrs
Jadavpur University Pro-Vice-Chancellor Pradip Kumar Ghosh left the campus after 72 hours, after agitating students lifted a gherao demanding a tripartite meeting on holding students' union elections. Members of Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU), Science Faculty Students Union (SFSU) and Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students' Union (FETSU) started an indefinite sit-in outside Ghosh's office to press for their demand on Friday evening. A member of the Jadavpur University Teachers' Association (JUTA) said the Pro-VC left the campus around 7 pm after sending a letter to the Higher Education department requesting immediate steps to convene a tripartite meeting of the university, students and the government for facilitating students' union polls in the institution at the earliest. DUTA forms human chain against 'misgovernance' of varsity admin
The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) formed a human chain on Monday in an act of protest against the alleged misgovernance of the varsity administration. Several teachers and students assembled to form the human chain as a precursor to the strike to be observed on February 27, 28 and March 1 against various policies of the administration and the HRD Ministry, the DUTA said. Teachers who participated in the human chain alleged there is a nexus between the university administration and the HRD Ministry to ensure that the issues remain unresolved as part of the government's agenda to withdraw funding from higher education, it said. They said the government has not responded on bringing an ordinance on the roster issue and a one-time regulation to regularise and absorb temporary and ad-hoc teachers despite several representations, it added. The teachers also accused the vice-chancellor of being "apathetic" towards various issues.

Photo exhibition: HC dismisses plea seeking against Loyola College principal
The Madras High Court Monday dismissed a plea seeking action against the principal of Loyola College here for allegedly allowing display of some paintings on Bharat Mata in an inappropriate manner. Dismissing the plea, a division bench of Justices S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad said the petitioner has alternative remedy under the Criminal Procedure Code to proceed with. The high court said the petitioner has not submitted a representation to the Commissioner of Police, who was arraigned as a respondent in the petition. He had instead made a representation to the Director General of Police, who has not been arraigned as respondent in the petition, it said. Breakfast scheme for school students launched in Chennai
Hailing Tamil Nadu as a torchbearer of welfare initiatives, state Governor Banwarilal Purohit Monday inaugurated a breakfast scheme for school students here. The "Kaalai Unavu Thittam" (breakfast scheme) is jointly implemented by the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Akshaya Patra Foundation. Students should not have pushed JU VC: WB governor
West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi Monday criticised a section of agitating students of the Jadavpur University for heckling Vice-Chancellor Prof Suranjan Das, saying they should not have pushed him. Das had fallen down in front of the administrative building of the University on February 19 during a scuffle between two groups of students. He was hospitalised for two days following the incident. "The students should not have pushed the VC under any circumstances. The students should not ever hit their teacher, their VC," Tripathi told reporters on the sidelines of the convocation of the West Bengal State University in Barasat near here. Asked to comment on the heckling of Das, the governor said the students "should not be involved in any conduct which will go against the spirit of their respective institute". Seats filled under EWS, DG by Delhi govt 3 times more than in MCD schools: Outcome Budget
The number of seats filled under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Disadvantaged Group (DG) in aided or unaided schools by the city dispensation is 3 times more than the seats filled in schools under the three municipal bodies, the Outcome Budget of Delhi government Monday said. The outcome budget, which was tabled in Delhi Assembly, also said the number of admissions in private schools have witnessed a 240 per cent increase since 2015-16. "The number of admissions in private schools as per the Section 12 of the Right to Education (RTE) Act have witnessed a 240 per cent increase since 2015-16," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said. According to the outcome budget speech, at least 76 per cent seats have been filled in schools aided or unaided by Delhi government under the two categories, almost three times more than the schools under three MCDs. Sisodia pointed out that the Delhi government introduced nursery classes in 301 schools run by it and till December 2018, 95 per .
PIL for free education, food and medical aid to poor kids: HC seeks Centre, AAP govt stand
The Delhi High Court asked the Centre, the AAP government and the three municipal corporations on Monday to respond to a plea seeking a policy guaranteeing free education, food and medical aid to children up to 14 years of age. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao issued notice to the ministries of Human Resource Development and Women and Child Development, the Delhi government and the three corporations in the city seeking their stand on the petition by July 31, the next date of hearing. The order came on a plea by Salek Chand Jain, who claims to be a social worker and has alleged that there is no scheme in place to provide free education, as mandated by the Constitution, to poor children up to 14 years of age in government or municipal schools in the national capital.
