5 Odisha teachers held for circulating question paper images
At least five school teachers were arrested Saturday for their alleged involvement in posting images of the ongoing matriculation examination question papers on social media, officials said. Officials of the Board of Secondary Education, Odisha, which conducts the matriculation examination (Class 10), said more arrests would be made in this connection. The examination, which began on Friday, will conclude on March 8. "FIRs against nine school teachers, who were engaged as centre superintendents or examination invigilators, had been registered at different police stations in Koraput, Nuapada and Dhenkanal districts for their mischievous role during the examinations that began on Friday," said Nihar Ranjan Mohanty, Controller of Examination. Firing a fresh salvo at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi Saturday alleged the government "does not want to accept" that there was a "job crisis" in the country, and said the PM should hold discussions with the youth to address the issue. HS examinees' regn to be cancelled if they carry mobiles
After question papers of class 10 state board examination were "leaked" on social media, the authorities holding the class 12 examination Saturday warned students that their registration number could be cancelled if they carry mobile phones in examination halls. The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) said examinees would also be checked with mobile detectors at the entrance of the hall and inside it. The WBCHSE conducts the Higher Secondary (class 12) examination which will begin from February 26 and continue till March 13 across the state. "We will take strong action if any mobile phone is found with students. We may even consider cancelling the student's registration altogether, and not just stopping him or her from writing the respective paper," WBCHSE president Mahua Das told a press meet here. Students' agitation: JU Pro-V-C confined in office for 24 hrs
A section of agitating Jadavpur University students have confined Pro-Vice-Chancellor Pradip Kumar Ghosh in his office for over 24 hours, university sources said Saturday. Members of the Arts Faculty Students' Union (AFSU), Science Faculty Students Union (SFSU) and Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students' Union (FETSU) have been camping outside Ghosh's chamber since Friday evening over a series of demands. They have been demanding punishment of the Trinamool Congress-sheltered students who had allegedly been threatening them of stopping "all kinds of democratic activities" inside the university campus. HC seeks Centre, MCI response over delay in implementing medical education regulation
The Delhi High Court has sought response of the Centre and the Medical Council of India (MCI) on a plea claiming that there is a delay in implementing the revised graduate medical education regulation. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao issued notice to authorities and directed them to file their responses within four weeks and list the matter for further hearing on May 3. The petition filed by Indrajit Laxmanrao Khandekar said there has been tremendous change in the field of medical examination worldwide and India has not witnessed the revision of the graduate medical education regulation (GMER) for undergraduate medical students since 1997, resulting into adoption of outdated practices and study material by the students. It sought direction to authorities to release and implement the revised graduate medical education regulation (as amended till date) forthwith. Three Kashmiri girl students of the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) have been booked for allegedly forwarding controversial comments, along with their own remarks, against the Indian Army on an instant messaging app following the pulwama terror strike, police said here Saturday. According to an official, after the deadly Pulwama attack on February 14, these girls allegedly made some adverse and objectionable comments on a WhatsApp group in which other students were also members. 88 pc Delhi schools have playgrounds, computer facilities: economic survey
Only 88 per cent schools in the national capital have playgrounds and computer facilities, according to the economic survey of Delhi for the year 2018-19. But the survey, tabled in Delhi Assembly Saturday, said all schools in Delhi have toilets for boys and girls, electricity connection and drinking water facilities, an improvement from preceding years. According to the survey, the Net Enrolment Ratio in primary education declined from 93.26 per cent in 2015-16 to 92.55 per cent in 2016-17. "The education expenditure to the Gross State Domestic Product of Delhi is the highest at 1.70 per cent in 2018-19. In Delhi, the per student per annum expenditure incurred by the government on education has increased to Rs 66,038 in 2018-19 from Rs 54,910 in 2016-17," the survey said. Stringent action against students if mobile phone found during
West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education Saturday said strong action will be taken against students if any mobile phone was found in their possession in the examination hall during the class 12 examination. "We will take strong action if any mobile phone is found with students in the classroom. We may even consider cancelling student's registration altogether and not just stopping giving the respective exam paper," Council president Mahua Das said. The higher secondary (class 12) examination will begin from February 26 and will continue till March 13. Das also outlined various steps the Council has taken for the students and a guide for teachers and students.

JU forms probe panel to look into Feb 19 incident
Jadavpur University Pro-VC Dr Pradip Kumar Ghosh Friday said an inquiry committee will be formed to look into the circumstances behind the incidents on Feburary 19 which led to the alleged assault of Vice-Chancellor Prof Suranjan Das by some students . Ghosh told reporters that the composition and other details of the committee will be decided next week. A scuffle broke out on February 19, between two groups of students, who wanted to approach the VC with their demands as soon as he stepped out of his office after the EC meeting. Teacher gets 3 years in jail for sexually assaulting student
A court here Friday sentenced a tuition teacher to three years' imprisonment for sexually assaulting a ten-year-old student. Pradeep Singh (30) was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim, a Class 5 student, attended Singh's tuitions. In January 2015, the girl told her mother that Singh made her sit close to him and touched her inappropriately. He threatened to beat her if she told anybody about this, the girl said. Police arrested Singh after the girl's mother lodged a complaint. Apart from POCSO provisions, special judge S J Gharat also convicted Singh under IPC section 506 (criminal intimidation), said prosecutor Vinod More.

Hitting out at an AAP MLA who claimed that no new degree colleges were opened in some areas in Sangrur district, Punjab Higher Education Minister Razia Sultana Friday said her department did not have Aladdin's magic lamp which, if rubbed, would set up a building in no time. The minister was replying to a supplementary question by Leader of Opposition and AAP MLA Harpal Singh Cheema who sought to know the status of degree colleges in Bhawanigarh, Dirba and some other areas in Sangrur district.
