Institutes need to cope with changing environment in higher

West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi on Friday called upon higher educational institutes to cope with the new changing environment in higher education and respond accordingly to the evolving situation. Addressing the third foundation day of the St Xavier's University at New Town here, Tripathi said access to quality teaching, learning, innovation, research, consultancy and placement are the key areas in the field of higher education. Boy held after pregnant classmate accuses him of rape

A teenage boy of a state-run residential school in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district was apprehended and sent to a juvenile home after one of her classmates, who is in her advanced stage of pregnancy, accused him of raping her, officials said Friday. The headmistress of the school in the district lodged a complaint with the police on Wednesday after noticing that the tribal girl, a student of Class 6, is pregnant, a police officer said. The 14-year-old girl was then taken for examination to a local hospital here, and was found to be carrying a six-month-old foetus, the officer said. "In her statement, she accused the boy, who is of the same age as her, of raping her," he said. The boy was produced on Thursday before a member of the District Juvenile Board, who sent him to an observation home in Angul district, around 315 km from here, he added. BJP youth wing demands temple on AMU campus

Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) has demanded the construction of a temple for Hindu students on premises of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).Mukesh Singh Lodhi, the district president of the BJYM, wrote a letter to vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor on Thursday, stating that he had 15 days to reply, failing which thousands of BJYM workers will enter the campus to place the idol for worship."We are giving AMU Vice Chancellor 15 days to reply, or we will go with thousand of our workers for murti sthapana," Lodhi told ANI."AMU founder Sir Syed Ahmad Khan had stated that both Hindu and Muslims are like two eyes of a bride (India). Thousands of students from varsities across the country braved the winter chill to march from the Red Fort to Parliament Street in Delhi on Thursday to demand better employment and educational opportunities. Indians applying to UK universities registers hike

A five per cent rise in the number of Indian students applying to study at UK universities is part of a wider hike in applications from international students from the outside the European Union (EU), new figures released here on Thursday revealed. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), the UK's centralised university application system, disclosed that 4,690 students from India applied to take up courses at universities across Britain from September this year. This compares favourably to 4,470 applications last year and a considerable hike over the previous years. While the figures do not reflect the actual number of Indian students who will be successful in their applications to be able to join these courses, they reflect an interest in the UK as a destination for higher education. 19 IAS officers transferred/assigned addl depts in Rajasthan

Nineteen IAS officers were on Thursday transferred or assigned additional charge of other departments in Rajasthan. Delhi govt's entrepreneurship curriculum to have no exams, books

The entrepreneurship curriculum that will be soon launched by the Delhi government will have no exams, books or evaluation, an official statement said Wednesday. The government will start the entrepreneurship curriculum as a pilot project in 15 to 20 schools in April and will see a full-fledged launch in all government schools in July, the statement added. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) in its governing council meeting chaired by the Education Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia approved the framework of entrepreneurship curriculum. The framework is now ready for a formal release on February 13, the statement said, adding the framework has been made by a 16-member committee comprising SCERT teachers, NCERT teachers working on entrepreneurship, teachers of prominent private schools and many experts of the field. CUSAT allows 'saraswati pooja' on Alappuzha campus following

Authorities of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) Thursday granted permission to a section of students in its Alappuzha campus to conduct 'pooja' for Goddess Saraswati, in a peaceful manner following a protest by them. The permission was granted after north Indian students studying in the Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK) protested the CUSAT authorities' decision not to grant permission to organise the religious function in the institution, college authorities said. UP budget: Medical varsity in Vajpayee's name announced

The Uttar Pradesh government announced on Thursday a medical university in the name of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and earmarked Rs 50 crore for it. "Rs 50 crore has been proposed in the budget to set up the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University in Lucknow. Similarly, Rs 10 crore has been proposed for setting up an Ayush University in the state," Finance Minister Rajesh Agarwal said in his budget speech. The budget also proposed Rs 908 crore for upgrading select district hospitals into medical colleges and Rs 907 crore for various works of King George's Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow. A total of Rs 25 crore has also been kept aside for setting up of a satellite centre of KGMU-Lucknow in Balrampur district. UP budget: Rs 26.57 cr for setting up Sainik schools

The Uttar Pradesh budget for 2019-20 has made a provision of Rs 26.57 crore to set up Sainik schools in the state. A provision of Rs 10 crore has been made to set up government intercolleges (both boys and girls) in the state, Finance Minister Rajesh Agarwal said in his budget speech. A budgetary provision of Rs 242 crore has also been made to provide grant-in-aid to Sanskrit 'pathshalas' (schools) in order to encourage education of the language. Another Rs 30 crore has been earmarked as grant to aided Sanskrit schools and degree colleges.
