Utah school becomes latest to ditch Native American name

Sports teams will no longer be known as the "Redmen" at a southern Utah high school, becoming the latest to get rid of a Native American name deemed offensive despite opposition from some residents and a national American Indian group. The Iron County School Board voted 3-2 Tuesday night to approve a recommendation from a committee that concluded Cedar High School should stop using the term that critics consider a racial slur. School board President Stephen Allen said Wednesday that deciding to change a name used since the 1940s was difficult but correct. Native American students who account for 6 percent of the high school's population reported being bullied over the name and feeling shame and embarrassment, Allen said. US lawmakers seek full details of sting operation of fake university

A bipartisan group of eminent lawmakers led by Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi on Wednesday sought details of the sting operation carried out by the US Department of Homeland Security resulting in detention of at least 129 students from India. In multiple raids last month, federal authorities arrested 130 students, including 129 Indians, enrolled as students in an alleged fraudulent university in Metro Detroit area and working across the country. In a letter, the lawmakers urge the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to ensure students detained following the recent ICE sting in Michigan were treated properly and are afforded all rights provided to them under law, including access to an attorney and release on bond for those eligible. DU to effect 10 pc increase in seats for EWS from coming session

The Delhi University will effect a 10 per cent increase in seats for economically weaker sections from the coming academic session, officials said Wednesday. The Human Resource Development Ministry has said it will implement 10 per cent reservation for economically weaker sections from the general category from the 2019 academic session and has directed to increase around 25 per cent seats in higher educational institutions and universities across the country. In the admissions committee meeting held Wednesday, it was decided that the varsity will be effecting the increase in two phases - 10 per cent in the first year and the remaining 15 per cent in the next year. A committee will be formed to work out the modalities as to how the seats will be increased, sources said. However, they said that for now there would not be much infrastructural changes and the newly admitted students will be accommodated in the existing classrooms. Primary teachers should not organise rallies without taking

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee Wednesday expressed dismay over a primary teachers' association holding a protest rally on a working day and said primary teachers should not participate in such activities abstaining from classes. Asked by reporters about the procession by Usthi United Primary Teachers' Welfare Association here during the day, Chatterjee asked, "Why did members of the primary teachers' body take out a rally on a week day disrupting classes?" He said the education department will take up the issue with the teachers concerned at individual level. "We won't take any punitive action but we will explain that you cannot do this neglecting your work and making the students suffer," Chatterjee said. No country can become a superpower if the youth are majorly job seekers, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said Wednesday. Raj govt launches 'Rajiv Gandhi Career Portal'

Rajasthan School Education Minister Govind Singh Dotasara Wednesday launched 'Rajiv Gandhi Career Portal' for students from classes 9 to 12. The portal aims to provide career guidance with information on entrance examinations, scholarships and employment-oriented courses. It is a big step of the government towards providing employment-orientededucation to students.The portal is developed with support from UNICEF and is a first-of-its-kind in the country, Dotasara said. He said the portal will provide information to students on over 200 vocational, 237 professional courses besides online information on over 455 employment areas, 10,000 colleges in the country, 960 scholarship schemes and over 955 entrance examinations. Environment think tank awards 12 schools

Environment think tank Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) on Wednesday felicitated 12 schools across the country with the Green School Awards for making their campuses environment friendly. This year, over 5,000 schools from across the country registered for the environmental audit. Of these, 1,600 schools submitted their completed audit reports to the CSE. CSE director general Sunita Narain said, "Indian schools, we find, are increasingly becoming conscious of their natural environments and resources, and the criticality of managing them sustainably." Govt to file review petition in SC on faculty reservation mechanism in universities: Javadekar

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said Tuesday that the government will file a review petition in the Supreme Court after its Special Leave Petition on faculty reservation mechanism for universities was rejected by the apex court. The announcement comes in the wake of protests by teachers and students bodies after the SLP seeking restoration of earlier mechanism of faculty reservation, which is calculating total posts institution-wise rather than department-wise, was dismissed by the apex court last month. "We will file review petition soon and we will put our point strongly. We are confident there will be justice and reservation will continue as per the earlier system. The government will ensure that reservation for SC/ST/OBC is not hampered," Javadekar added. Telangana :School principal, teacher booked for beating minor

A five-year-old boy was allegedly thrashed by her school teacher in Telangana's Neredmet, following which police registered a case against the teacher and the principal."On February 6, we received a complaint who said his five-year-old son, who is a student of UKG in Bhavan's Vidyalaya in Sainikpuri area was thrashed by his teacher," said a police official.In his complaint, the minor's father claimed that the teacher beat up his son with a cane for not paying attention to studies in the classroom.Taking cognisance of the complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice Act. An investigation in the matter has been initiated.The Ministry of Women and Child Development, in 2010, banned physical punishment of students following a suicide by a 12-year-old boy in Kolkata, after being humiliated and caned by his school principal.

Teacher thrashes boy for not paying attention during class

: A five-and-half-year-old boy was allegedly beaten up by his teacher at a private school at Neredmet here Tuesday, police said. The boy's father lodged a complaint that his son was "badly" beaten by the woman teacher in the classroom reportedly for not paying attention during class, they said. The boy, a UKG student, was beaten "badly" with cane and down with high temperature and pain, the complainant alleged and sought necessary action against the teacher and also the school's principal, police said. He alleged that there have been several instances of corporal punishment on children in the school, many going unreported and parents are scared about their child's career and welfare. Following the complaint, a case under relevant sections of the IPC and under the Juvenile Justice Act was registered against the teacher, police added.

DUTA demands removal of VC over 'inaction'

The Delhi University Teachers' Association marched from Mandi House to Parliament Street Tuesday and demanded the removal of the varsity's vice-chancellor over his alleged inaction on important issues in the varsity. Teaching came to a complete standstill in the Delhi University at DUTA's call for strike on Tuesday as thousands of teachers joined in the march, the DUTA said.
