"Schemes successfully implemented in Kamrup (Metro) district"

Assam's Kamrup (Metro) district that comprises the capital city of Guwahati has successfully accomplished various central and state government schemes in the health, education, social welfare, finance, power and other departments, an official said Thursday. Under the national health protection scheme Ayushmaan Bharat, 66000 poor and vulnerable families have been included for the Rs 5 lakh per household scheme, Deputy Commissioner Virendra Mittal told reporters. To reduce the incidence of Rubella and Measles among children, Mittal said he had held discussions with 50 private schools in the district and convinced them to participate in the vaccination drive. Clashes during students' union polls in UP college, three injured

Three students were Thursday injured following clashes between two rival groups during students' union election in Shri Murli Manohar Town Post Graduate College here, police said. The two groups indulged in brick-batting and opened fire at each other, leading injuries to three students -- Anand Rai, Vicky Rai and Sandeep Pandey, they said. The injured students were admitted to a hospital where condition of Anand Rai, who is said to be a ABVP supporter, was stated to be critical, police said. The matter is being probed, they said.

'Gyankumbh' to begin in Haridwar from Nov 3

Hundreds of academicians from all over the country and education ministers of 18 states will converge in Haridwar on November 3 for a two-day conference called "Gyankumbh" to deliberate on methods to enhance the quality of higher education in the country. Rahul writes to PM seeking air connectivity for Kota

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to facilitate commercial air connectivity for Rajasthan's Kota, citing that 1.5 lakh students across India study in coaching centres there each year and are inconvenienced due to the absence of such a facility. In a letter to the prime minister, Gandhi said while the Airport Authority of India operates an airport at Kota, it is not equipped to handle large commercial aircraft. He said currently lakhs of students and their families are inconvenienced by the absence of an airport there. "The need of the hour is to either upgrade the existing airport, or construct a new airport to handle commercial flights. Let us bring Vikas (development) to the enterprising people of Kota," the Congress chief said in the letter dated October 25. With over 1.5 lakh students, across India, studying in coaching centres each year in Kota, it is critical to have proper air connectivity, he said.

Dyal Singh College denies entry to principal facing graft charges

Dyal Singh College Principal I S Bakshi, who is being probed for alleged financial and administrative irregularities, on Wednesday alleged he was not allowed to enter the campus to take classes. The governing body of the Delhi University college had initiated a probe against the principal last month and directed him to proceed on an indefinite leave. Bakshi said he takes botany classes at the college on Monday and Wednesday. He said he took classes in the designated room on Monday after his office was sealed last week. "But on Wednesday, when I went to the college the guards stopped me and showed me a notice that read I am not allowed to enter the college. I told them I can discharge my duties as a teacher but they did not allow," he alleged. He called his students outside the college gate and conducted his class in a lawn outside the campus, Bakshi said. Students council elections process to be completed by Sept 30

Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde said Wednesday that the process of students council elections will be completed by September 30 in the next academic session. The elections to students councils in colleges and universities will be held as per the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee, Tawde told reporters here. The election program will be declared before July 31 and by September 30 the university students councils would be constituted, he said. "Elections will be held on the principle of straight majority. The election to university council and college councils under that university will be held on the same day," Tawde said. There will be no political interference in the elections, he said. "Those desirous of contesting elections should enrol for a full-time academic course in any recognised university or college in the academic year," the minister said. College elections were banned in the early 1990s.

'TMCP will not allow outsiders to meddle in college affairs'

The Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the party, will not allow outsiders to meddle into the affairs of any colleges, its president of West Bengal unit Trinankur Bhattacharya said Wednesday. "No outsider will enter the college and only students are kept in the union," Bhattacharya told a press meet after announcing 17 district committees and the state committee of TMCP here. Resignation of Bihar-based central univ V-C sent to president: Sources

The HRD Ministry Wednesday forwarded the resignation of Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) vice-chancellor and sent it to the President for approval. President Ram Nath Kovind, who is the visitor to the university will take a final call on Vice Chancellor Arvind Agarwal's resignation, sources in the ministry said. The V-C of the Bihar-based central university had tendered his resignation over allegations of he fudging his academic credentials to get the post. Agarwal has been under the government's radar for allegedly giving false information in his application. The ministry has received complaints that Agarwal lied about a foreign education to get the job and he did not pursue his Ph.D at a German institute as claimed, and actually got the degree from the University of Rajasthan. Jamia students demand reinstatement of union elections

A section of students of Jamia Millia Islamia University has submitted a memorandum to the varsity's vice-chancellor demanding reinstatement of students' union and declaration of the date of elections. The union elections were banned in the varsity in 2006 after its administration alleged that the union had started meddling in issues related to administrative work. "We the students of JMI have suffered immensely in the past 13 years after scrapping of students' union in 2006. We have no representation in the decision making bodies in the university and no mechanism to ensure the accountability of the decision making bodies of the university towards the students," the students said in a letter. The students feel powerless in the face of such administrative decisions as scrapping of papers, marksheets, fee hike or administrative inefficiencies such as delay and errors in examination results in absence of any mechanisms to make the students voice matter, the letter said. Couple arrested for strangulating girl to death: Police

A couple was arrested Wednesday for allegedly strangulating a girl to death at their residence in northeast Delhi's Welcome and then dumping her body at north Delhi's Timarpur, police said. The girl, aged around 11-12, used to go for tuition classes to her neighbour Ruksar's (32) residence, they added. On October 22, she went for the tuition classes at around 11 am, but did not return home, the police said, adding that the girl also used to help in the household chores at Ruksar's residence. On October 22, while the girl was trying to fetch an object from an upper shelf, it slipped and hit her on the face and she started crying, the police said. Irked by her wailing, Ruksar's husband Rajab (34) slapped her hard and she lost consciousness, they said, adding that Rajab was scared that after gaining consciousness, she might inform her parents. School teacher escapes from clutches of his captors

A school teacher, who is also a church leader, was kidnapped by armed miscreants from his home in South Garo Hills district in the early hours Wednesday but he managed to escape from the clutches of his captors, police said. The upper primary school teacher, identified as Sundaybirth Ch Marak (43), was sleeping at his Kakhija village home, when a group of men came to his house and knocked on his door, SP of South Garo Hills district, Abraham T Sangma, said. When Marak opened the door, he was immediately taken away by armed assailants at around 12:30 am, the SP said.
