Prof Saket Kushwaha appointed new VC of RGU

The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has appointed Professor Saket Kushwaha of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) as the new Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University at Rono Hills, near here. The ministry in an order issued on Monday appointed Kushwaha as the vc of the states lone Central university for a period of five years, officials said. The university was without a vice chancellor for several months with the students of the varsity along with other students bodies of the state led by All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) demanding the state government to pursue the Centre for appointment of a regular vc for the institute. XLRI team wins Kolkata qualifying round of The Sweden India

XLRI Jamshedpur has won the Kolkata qualifying round of 'The Sweden India Nobel Memorial Quiz 2018' held at the Calcutta Medical College campus. The three-member winning team secured 145 points at the qualifying round held on Monday. IIT Kharagpur secured the second position followed by Maulana Azad College, Kolkata, a statement by the organisers read. A total of 74 teams participated in the Kolkata round. Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Sweden, Gautam Bhattacharyya handed out the prizes at the inter-collegiate quiz competition which saw quizzers from across reputed colleges and technical institutes of the city and from elsewhere in the region, the statement read. ONGC to pump in Rs 1.68 cr for school drinking water in Assam

Oil major ONGC Tuesday said it is carrying out a drinking water project in over 50 schools across Assam in this financial year, entailing an investment of Rs 1.68 crore. During 2017-18, ONGC's School Drinking Water Project had benefitted more than 10,000 children in 32 schools in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts of Assam that entailed an investment of Rs 1.07 crore, the PSU behemoth said in a statement. "In financial year 2018-19, the project is being extended to 52 schools, which would benefit more than 15,000 school children, at a project cost of Rs 1.68 crore," the statement said. "Providing clean and safe drinking water in schools in and around ONGC's operational area is a CSR initiative by ONGC Assam Asset in association with ONGC's All India OBC & MOBC Employees Welfare Association," the company said. HNLU VC Sukhpal Singh resigns

Vice-chancellor of Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) Dr Sukhpal Singh, whose continuance at the post was opposed by students on various counts, resigned Monday. Singh stepped down after a number of students started an indefinite hunger strike this morning for their demand to remove the VC who was granted a five-year extension in 2016. Students have been protesting since September 25 inside the varsity campus located in Atal Nagar- the upcoming capital city of Chhattisgarh against continuation of Singh. Students had said they had lost faith in the "incompetent" administration and "arbitrary and discriminatory" decision making style of Singh. Student union polls will be held in Hry before Oct 15: Minister

After a gap of nearly 22 years, student union elections would be held in colleges and universities of Haryana before October 15, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said Monday, saying the ruling BJP has thus fulfilled its poll promise. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has given his approval to allow conduct of student union polls in college and universities, fulfilling a long pending demand of the students, Sharma said, adding with the decision to conduct the polls the BJP has fulfilled its promise made at the time of 2014 state assembly elections. Student union elections in Haryana would be conducted before October 15 for the current academic session of 2018-19, he said in a statement. A foolproof system will be put in place to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections, it said. Presidency students on hunger strike over hostel accommodation

A section of the agitating students of Presidency University here began indefinite hunger strike from Monday night demanding immediate accommodation in the under renovation Hindu hostel. Altogether 50 students have been on a sit-in demonstration at the university campus since August 3 and eight have started the indefinite fast. "The fast began at the campus portico from 9 pm and it will continue till the authorities take initiative to shift the 50 students to two blocks of Hindu hostel immediately," Ujan, one of the agitating students, told PTI after a general body meeting of students in the campus. No students' union election in Ravenshaw Univ, MS Law College

The authorities of M S Law College and Ravenshaw University here Monday decided that elections to form students union in their institutions would not be held this year. Students union elections were not held in these institutions last year. "In pursuance of the proceedings of joint meeting of Deans, HoDs, Coordinators and members of Students Election Monitoring Committee and Proctorial Board and recommendations thereof, the students union election 2018 of Ravenshaw University stands cancelled," said a notification issued by the University authorities. Similarly, a notice published in the notice board of M S Law College on the day signed by Principal Dr Sushant K. Nanda said: "As per the decision of the Staff Council, there will be no election to the Students Council this year." It was also learnt that the authorities of the premier law college have decided to suspend the classes till the end of puja vacation on October 24.

ABVP leaders meet Rajnath Singh, demand CBI probe into Islampur firing

4 Manipur university professors suspended for 'misconduct'

The crisis-ridden Manipur University has suspended four professors as disciplinary proceedings were "contemplated/pending" against them for alleged misconduct. Y Amar of economics department, N Nimai (physics), M Ranjit (mathematics) and N Debananda (biochemistry) have been charged with "misconduct", an order signed by registrar in-charge M Shyammesho said. Though the suspension order was signed on September 29, it came to light on Monday. The four were members of the Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA). Except Amar, others were mentioned in an FIR lodged on September 20 by the university's acting vice-chancellor, K Yugindro Singh, who accused them of kidnapping, wrongful confinement, attempt to murder, among others. Girls' school burnt down by terrorists in Chitral

In a tragic incident, a government-run primary girls' school was burnt by so-called terrorists in Chitral district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.According to reports from local sources, the school was later blown up by terrorists and the building has been completely destroyed. Haryana's MDU declared cleanest govt university by HRD Ministry

Haryana's Maharshi Dayanand University has been declared the cleanest government varsity by the HRD Ministry, followed by Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab's Amritsar. Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the "Swachh Campus rankings" under different categories on Monday.
