Delhi govt-school principals to get training at Cambridge

The Delhi government is sending as many as 60 principals of its government schools to the prestigious Cambridge University in England for a training programme. Announcing the decision on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the principals would be sent in two batches of 30 each for the Inspiring Leadership Improving Performance. While the first batch will be at Cambridge between October 8 -17, the training for the next batch will be from October 19-28. "The Delhi government has increased it teachers-training budget more than 11 times from Rs 9 crore to Rs 102 crore. After the improvement in infrastructure in government schools, the next target is that the teachers should be trained at the best level," Sisodia said, while addressing a gathering of principals here. Haryana's MDU ranked cleanest govt varsity by HRD Ministry

Haryana's Maharashi Dayanand University has been ranked the cleanest government university by the HRD Ministry followed by Guru Nanak Dev University in neighbouring Punjab's Amritsar. Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the "Swachh Campus rankings" under different categories on Monday. The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in the national capital has been ranked third among the government institutions followed by the Algappa University in Karaikudi and the Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur. Among the residential campuses of private universities, Pune's Symbiosis International University has been ranked at the top followed by OP Jindal Global University in Sonipat, KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research in Belagavi and Manipal University in Jaipur. Telangana: Cop babysits child while mother writes exam

'Threatened' MP professor touches feet of students in college; video goes viral

A video purportedly showing a government college professor in Madhya Pradesh touching the feet of some ABVP activists after they threatened to lodge a police complaint against him over his objection to them raising "patriotic" slogans has surfaced. According to sources in the Government Commerce College in Mandasaur, professor Dinesh Gupta was teaching students on September 26 when Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists raised "patriotic" slogans. Gupta came out of the classroom and asked them not to disturb but they ignored him. The activists threatened the professor that they would approaching the police for trying to stop them from raising 'patriotic' slogans, they said. AICTE setting up 4 teacher training academies

The AICTE is setting up four teacher training academies in the country which will equip candidates with the latest changes in technical education, the council's Chairman Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe said Sunday. The academies, coming up at Thiruvananthapuram, Guwahati, Baroda and Jaipur, will have eight modules that are semester-based, Sahasrabudhe told reporters on the sidelines of 'The National Conference on Indian Higher Education: Quality Assurance, Accreditation & Ranking' here. While the 2-acre Jaipur academy will start in one-and-a-half years, the other three academies will also start functioning within two years. Scolded for using phone in class, Chhattisgarh girl hangs self

A 16-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in a government school in Madhya Pradesh's Korba district after she was reportedly reprimanded by her teacher for using a mobile phone during class, police said Sunday. Babli Yadav, a Class IX student, hung herself from a tree in the premises of the government high school in Nonbirra village Saturday afternoon, Dipka station house officer (SHO) Sharad Chandra said. He said that preliminary investigation has revealed that Yadav was spotted by her teacher while she was speaking on her mobile phone during class. "Yadav threw the phone from the class window but the teacher retrieved it and complained to the school principal. She also scolded Yadav," the SHO said. Boys' primary school blown up in Pakistan

A boys' primary school was blown up on Sunday by the Taliban in Pakistan's restive northwest tribal region bordering Afghanistan. It was the only school in Chitral district's Arandu village, a remote area in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack, carried out through bombs planted around the boundary wall, has demolished two rooms and partially damaged the main building, police said. A senior police officer said that 80 to 90 students are enrolled in the school. No one was injured as the school was closed due to Sunday. DU forms mock teams, sends questionnaires to depts ahead of NAAC visit

Does the DU department celebrate national festivals or observe birth and death anniversaries of great Indian personalities? Is there a policy in place to check plagiarism? These form part of the questionnaire sent by the Delhi University to its departments ahead of the NAAC visit next month, an official said. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) will be visiting various departments of the varsity from October 29 to 31. The grading provided by the Council is crucial for the funds and grants allotted to the varsity by the University Grants Commission (UGC), he said. MUTA sets pre-conditions for talks on Manipur University

The Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) has said that they will sit for talks to end a month-long agitation only after their demands, including "unconditional release" of 15 teachers and students, are met. The students and teachers of the Manipur University were arrested on September 21. A team of officers had raided the university hostel and the residential quarters and took the students and the teachers into custody based on a complaint filed by newly appointed Acting Vice Chancellor K Yugindro Singh. MP announces 52nd district, decision to come into effect from Oct 1

The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday announced the creation of a new district 'Niwari'.The new district would include three tehsils of the present Tikamgarh district - Niwari, Orchha and Prithvipur. The government's decision will come into effect from October 1.With Niwari, the total number of districts in the state now stands at 52. The district has been carved out of the Tikamgarh district.The decision comes ahead of the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections, which is scheduled to be held by the end of this year.

DU executive council defers decision on signing MoU among varsity, HRD Ministry, UGC

The Delhi University's executive council has deferred taking a decision on the signing of an MoU among the varsity, HRD Ministry and the UGC over funds even after extensive deliberations, an official said Saturday. The meeting of the executive council (EC) started Thursday and the zero hour lasted till 3 am Friday. It resumed 12 hours later, but was adjourned 3 am Saturday, an EC member said, adding that it will meet again on October 3. The contentious issue of whether the varsity should sign the MoU to continue receiving funds from the University Grants Commission (UGC), was deferred for the next meeting, another EC member said. The UGC had shared the draft with the university and a committee of the EC was formed to study and revise it.
