Deepak Kumar, a research scholar of the philosophy department, attempted suicide last Thursday and recorded a video that went viral on social media. In his suicide note, the student said he took the step in depression after he was allegedly discriminated due to his caste by Dwarika Nath, the head of the philosophy department; and C P Srivastav, the dean of the faculty of arts. The condition of the student, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital, is stable. The Madras High Court Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to make surprise checks to verify whether schools implemented the no homework rule upto class II and followed NCERT-prescribed textbooks ordered by it. Justice N Kirubakaran issued the directive to the School Education Secretary and Director and sought a compliance report. He posted the matter for further hearing to October 9. The order was given during the hearing of a petition by advocate Purushothaman over implementation of NCERT syllabus by the CBSE. In his order, the judge in his order, said the state education authorities should make surprise checks in all schools, including those under the CBSE and state board, to see that the order of the court banning the homework as well as restricting of subjects was properly implemented. A government school principal was arrested Tuesday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4,500 in Sri Ganganagar district under Bikaner division of Rajasthan. The accused Ved Prakash, principal of the government senior secondary school, Raisinghnagar, had demanded the bribe from a private school's principal for submitting a favourable school inspection report under Right to Education (RTE). After verification of the complaint, the accused was caught red-handed taking the bribe, Additional SP of Anti-corruption Bureau Rajendra Dhidharia said. The incident occurred when the classes were on in the private school, Superintendent of Police Jayant Kant said. There were around 25-30 students in the class when the ceiling plaster fell, he said. Amnesty International India Tuesday demanded immediate release of six professors and nine students of Manipur University arrested by the police and said midnight raids and subsequent detentions based on unsubstantiated allegations is "outright harassment". A total of 89 students and six teachers of Manipur University were arrested early Friday in Imphal following an agitation on the institute's campus. Amnesty International India said a few days later, these six professors and nine students remained in custody. The body said the professors and students have been arrested for a range of offences including wrongful confinement, attempt to murder, kidnapping and criminal conspiracy. Blaming police action for the death of two students during a protest in Islampur, West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday alleged that some IPS officers were working for the Trinamool Congress government and warned that they would "not be spared". Ghosh alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC government was trying to impose Urdu language in schools in the state and asserted that such attempts would be resisted. The fourth edition of India International Science Festival (IISF) will be inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind in Lucknow on October 6, Union minister Harsh Vardhan said Monday. The Delhi University's Department of Buddhist Studies will verify the documents of DUSU president Ankiv Baisoya, accused of submitting fake documents for admission, as well as that of 202 students enrolled with it, an official said. The Union government will increase its annual allocation for interest-free loans to students and digitalise over 15 lakh classrooms as part of its resolve to ensure quality education in the country, said Union Minister Prakash Javadekar Monday. The annual budget to provide interest-free loans to 10 lakh students would be increased to Rs 2,200 crore in next three years, said Union Minister for Human Resource Development Javadekar, addressing the 2nd Higher Education Human Resource Conclave here. Over 15 lakh classrooms from standard 9 to post-graduate levels would be digitalised under 'Operation Digital Board', he told the conclave, organised with an aim "to promote an environment of innovations, employability and entrepreneurship across the country".
