No lugging books to school,no homework for Class I&II pupils: Court

Children are neither weightlifters nor school bags loaded containers, the Madras High Court said today, as it asked the Centre to instruct state governments to reduce weight of satchels of school children and do away with homework for classes I and II. In its interim order, the court also said use of National Council for Educational Research and Training books be made mandatory. The state governments were asked to ensure that weight of the satchels shall not be more than 10 per cent of the weight of the child. It observed that children are neither weightlifters nor school bags loaded containers. Justice N Kirubakaran, while referring to the government orders (GOs) issued by governments of Telangana and Maharashtra, directed the Centre to direct the state governments and governments of Union Territories to formulate a "Children School Bag Policy" reducing the weight of the satchels in line with the guidelines issued by either state. Music compositions of western classical masters Mozart and Beethoven acted as stress-buster for Prakhar Mittal, one of the four all-India CBSE class 10 toppers, who is also a trained pianist. A genetic disorder could not deter Anushka Panda from passing the Class 10 CBSE Board exam with flying colours. She topped the board exam in the differently-abled category, with a score of 97.8 per cent. She scored 99 in Mathematics and Hindi, 98 in Science and Social Science and 95 in English. Anushka, a student of Suncity School Gurgaon, is also a trained classical singer. A fan of singers Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar, Panda aspires to become a software engineer. "She suffers from muscular spinal atrophy and is wheelchair bound. She could not study for long hours and had to lie down after studying for an hour but she remained determined. JNU prof cannot take charge as hostel warden, directs Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Atul Kumar Johri, accused of sexually harassing women students, not to take charge as warden of any girls hostel.The high court also asked the fact-finding committee, formed to probe the matter, to decide on his suspension.The next hearing on the matter will be held on August 17.The high court, on April 25, issued notices and sought a reply from the authorities, Delhi Police, and Johri on a plea filed by female students seeking Johri's suspension and a declaration that he should not be allowed to enter the university campus.In March, Delhi's Patiala House Court granted bail to Johri. He was released on bail hours after he was arrested by the police.At least nine women had filed FIRs against the professor from the School of Life Sciences, accusing him of sexual harassment.

Women school teachers in Odisha to wear handloom sarees

In a bid to promote use of handlooms products and support weavers, Odisha government has decided to make it mandatory for women school teachers to wear sarees made by state handloom cooperative, Boyanika, a state minister said today. "Women teachers of both high school and upper primary schools will now wear Boyanika sarees from this academic session," said Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Minister, Snehangini Chhuria. She said the colour of their uniform will not change, but the materials of the saree. The minister said this after a meeting attended by the ministers of Higher Education and School and Mass Education department. Replying a question, the minister said that the decision was taken keeping in view the interest of weavers and empower them by providing work round the year "Subsequently, the uniform of students will also be replaced with the same hand-woven textile materials. University of Hyderabad to mentor new varsity in AP

University of Hyderabad, also known as Hyderabad Central University, will mentor the Central University of Andhra Pradesh which is proposed to be set up in Jantharalu village of Anantpur district. "The Ministry of Human Resource Development has communicated the setting up of a Central University of Andhra Pradesh and has also decided that the University of Hyderabad will mentor the activities of the proposed university till the amendment to the Central Universities Act of 2009 is effected," a press release said here today. The role of mentor includes formation of society under the Societies Act to ensure the start of academic activities from this year, identify courses that can be introduced and estimation of cost for running the university for the first year among others, it said. HRD minister congratulates students who passed CBSE Class 10 exams

Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Prakash Javadekar congratulated the students who passed their Class 10 CBSE exams today and said the reintroduction of the board exam was an important step. The results of the Class 10 CBSE exams were announced today. This was the first batch of students to appear for the Class 10 board examinations after the CBSE decided to junk the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) and reintroduce the board exams. "I congratulate those who have succeeded in their exams. Those who did not succeed should not lose heart. The students who have got compartment should prepare well and they will pass the exam," Javadekar told reporters. Portal, mobile app developed for use in hi-tech classes in Ker

Over 40,000 classrooms are set to go hi-tech across the state by June this year with the Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education developing a portal and its mobile app for the purpose. The state government has issued an order directing educational directors to ensure proper use of the Samagra Resource Portal in 45,000 classrooms. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would inaugurate the portal and the mobile app on May 31 at a functionpresided over by Education minister C Raveendranath, a government release said. Samagra is different from conventional educational portals with its design structured to ensure all learning objectives in subjects in classrooms are transacted properly by using lesson plans as envisaged by the curriculum. Bihar Cabinet approves Fisheries College at Kishanganj

Bihar Cabinet today gave its nod to set up a Fisheries College at Kishanganj at a cost of Rs 40.31 crore. The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar okayed creation of academic and administrative posts apart from development of infrastructure of the College at a cost of Rs 40.31 crore in 2018-19 financial year, Cabinet Secretariat Department's Principal Secretary Arun Kumar Singh told reporters here. It also approved creation of 88 new posts in Transplant and Nephralogy departments of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) for starting the kidney transplant facility at the hospital, Singh said. CBSE Class 10 results: JNV schools record highest pass percentage

Among all the categories of schools affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) schools recorded the best pass percentage in the Class 10 board exams, while government schools registered the lowest pass percentage. The results of the exams were announced today. According to CBSE officials, Kendriya Vidyalaya schools recorded a pass percentage of 95.96, followed by private schools, which registered a pass percentage of 89.49. The schools under the Central Tibetan Schools Administration (CTSA) recorded a pass percentage of 86.43, while the pass percentage in government-aided schools was 73.46. The government schools recorded a pass percentage of 63.97, the lowest among all the categories. The overall pass percentage in the Class 10 board examinations was 86.70, the CBSE said. Girls, with a pass percentage of 88.67, did better than the boys, who registered a pass percentage of 85.32. This was the first batch to appear for the Class .

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) declared the Class 10 board exam results today. The overall pass percentage was 86.70, it said. Kejriwal, Sisodia visit Delhi's CBSE Class 12 exam toppers

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia visited the city's CBSE Class 12 examination toppers today. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today declared the Class 10 Board exam results. Students can access their results on the Board's website, officials said. The board exams this year were marred by controversy with question paper leaks being reported from Delhi-NCR and Jharkhand. The HRD ministry had decided against conducting a re-examination of the Class 10 mathematics paper in the "interest of students".
