Girls outshone boys in the CBSE Class XII results announced today with Meghna Srivastava, from a Noida school, topping the examination this year. The overall pass percentage was 83.01 per cent as against last year's 82.02 per cent. Girls did better than the boys with a pass percentage of 88.31 per cent against boys' 78.99 per cent, officials at the CBSE headquarters said here. The Allahabad High Court today directed the district magistrate of Gonda to inquire into the demolition of a government primary school building in front of the bungalow of BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The Lucknow bench of the high court directed the district magistrate to file an affidavit on July 2 after making inquiry into all aspects such as under which circumstances and by whose order the building was demolished. A bench of Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Abdul Moin passed the order on a PIL moved by Rana Pratap Singh. The petitioner alleged that it was demolished to provide a large space to the parliamentarian in front of his house, in collusion with education authorities and the village pradhan. The claim that the school building was demolished because it was dilapidated was not correct, the petitioner said. Punjab Education Minister Om Prakash Soni today directed officers to ensure that textbooks are distributed to students one month before the session starts. These instructions were issued by the minister during a high-level meeting with officers of the Punjab School Education Board at Mohali, an official spokesman said. He said the printing process should be completed well before time so that the students can get the textbooks one month before the next session. Soni took strong exception to the unused textbooks stocked in the board and its depots. He directed the officers to personally inspect all the stores and depots and make an inventory of the stock of undistributed textbooks. He asked the officers to coordinate with the Social Welfare Department to get dues amounting to Rs 250 crore, pending on account of supply of textbooks. The Delhi University will hold 'Open Days' session for those aspiring admission to postgraduate, M.Phil and PhD courses next month to address their queries. For PG students the session will be held on June 1, while for other two courses it will be on the next day in the Conference Centre near Gate 4 of the North Campus, the varsity said in a statement. "The session will be held in two slots -- 10 AM t0 11.30 AM and 12 PM to 1.30 PM. In the session, information about registration, admission process and schedule and other related information will be provided," the statement said. Someone opened fire at a suburban Indianapolis middle school today, injuring an adult and a child before the suspect was taken into custody, authorities said. The victims in the attack at Noblesville West Middle School were taken to hospitals in Indianapolis and their families were notified, Bryant Orem, a spokesman for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, said in a news release. The suspect is believed to have acted alone and was taken into custody, he said. The Centre has allowed the Arunachal Pradesh government to start the next academic session at the Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) at Naharlagun with an intake of 50 MBBS students, paving the way for the state's first medical college. The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has issued a Letter of Permission to the state government in this regard, Chief Minister Pema Khandu said. Over 11 lakh students had registered for the Class 12 examination, which was marred with controversy over the paper leak issue. CBSE Class 12 results for Academic Session 2017-18 to be declared on 26th of May, Education Secretary Anil Swarup tweeted. The Board had conducted a re-test of Class 12 economics paper on April 25, nearly a month after it was leaked triggering widespread outrage and confusion among students across the country. The CBSE had also postponed the examinations scheduled to be held on April 2 in Punjab at the request of the state government in view of 'Bharat Bandh' called by several Dalit organisations against the alleged "dilution" of the SCs/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The examinations were held in March and April.

The Supreme Court today agreed to suggestions that the vacant post-graduate seats in private unaided medical colleges could be filled up as per the order of merit in the All-India National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) list. A bench of Justices A M Khanwilkar and Indu Malhotra said this while hearing a matter of Uttar Pradesh during which the Medical Council of India (MCI) said that almost 41.95 per cent of post-graduate medical seats for academic year 2018-2019 in private unaided medical colleges in the state have remained vacant. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Pinky Anand, who appeared for the Centre, suggested to the bench that "a similar dispensation can be followed in other states, if they so desire, while ensuring that the cut-off date of May 31, 2018 is strictly adhered to". Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited Visva Bharati University today to participate in its convocation, apologized to the students for paucity of water during the programme. "When I was coming I saw some students gesturing to me that they have no drinking water. As the chancellor of the university I apologise to the students for this problem," Modi said at the beginning of his convocation address. Unruly scenes were witnessed inside the convocation venue 'Amra Kunja' just before the prime minister arrived there as students protested over paucity of water, an official said. The students alleged that some of them fell sick as there was inadequate arrangement for water and other facilities at the venue. The university authorities, however, said the protesters were outsiders and had nothing to do with Visva Bharati. "Some of the protesters were identified and asked to leave the venue. The problem has been taken care of," said an official of the university.
Over 91 per cent students passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exam conducted last month by the Goa education board, an official said. The results of the Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary School Education (GBSHSSE) were announced today. Talking to reporters, GBSHSSE chairman Ramakrishna Samant said 91.27 per cent students have cleared the SSC exam. "Of the total 19,596 candidates who appeared for the exam, 17,886 passed it," he said. As many as 78 schools (57 aided and 21 government-run schools) secured 100 per cent results, he said. According to Samant, the SSC exam was conducted between April 2 and 21 at 27 exam centres across the state.
