Language is very important for any society and the country, and the New Education Policy which is being formulated will give Hindi its due importance, Union Minister of State for HRD, Satya Pal Singh, said today. "When the education policy came in 1835, Lord Macualay had said that India's people will remain Indians in their looks and blood but their thinking will be Brirish. Whenever we escalate talks about working for the mother toungue, things don't move forward," he said here while addressing the gathering at an award function at the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE). The Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute here has sought approval from the Centre for a collaborative programme with the University of Dhaka, its director said. A special anti-corruption court has ordered compensation of Rs 50,000 each to 50 students who were denied admission in professional colleges due to the Common Entrance Test (CET) scam that hit Jammu and Kashmir in 2012. The compensation to 50 students was given as per the merit list. The compensation was awarded by Special Judge Anti-corrpution Yash Paul Bourney in his 382-page judgement in the CET 2012 scam case delivered last week. The kingpin of the scam, then Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (BOPEE) Mushtaq Ahmad Peer was sentenced to 16 years rigorous imprisonment while 49 others were also convicted for offences under various acts. The accused were slapped with varying amounts of fine with Peer directed to pay Rs one crore. Lashing out at colleges for providing fake B.Ed degrees in the state, Bihar Governor Satya Pal Malik on Thursday said there is hardly any politician who is not associated with such institutions.Underscoring that there is indeed a "huge racket" running in the state which awards fake B.Ed degrees, Malik said, "A large number of colleges exist, most of them enjoying patronage of politicians.""There is hardly a politician who is not associated with such institutions that admit students without requisite authorisation. The Maharashtra government will start 13 'international schools' with specialised curriculum from June this year, and a total of 100 such schools will be started by the next academic year, Education Minister Vinod Tawde said today. The government has formed the Maharashtra International Education Board (MIEB) for this purpose, he told reporters here. The MIEB will be an autonomous body which will decide the curriculum and conduct examinations, he said. "The government intends to provide an international- quality education and hence decided to start upto 100 international schools," he said. The medium of instruction at the 13 schools that will start this year will be Marathi, and schools with other regional languages as the medium of instruction will be started later, he said. Seventy teachers have been selected to teach at the 13 schools, and they would undergo a rigorous 22-day training, Tawde said.
The National Commission for Minorities has sought a report from the Aligarh district administration on police action on students demanding arrest of members of a right-wing outfit which protested displaying of Muhammad Ali Jinnah's portrait on the varsity campus, sources said today. The NCM has asked for a report from the local administration after former members of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students' union made a complaint to the panel. Their complaint does not talk about the portrait, but the police action on students. The NCM has asked the district administration to submit the report about it in three days, a source added.
