Name of Dyal Singh College remains unchanged, says its chairman

The chairman of the governing body of the Dyal Singh College and Vandemataram Dyal Singh College, Amitabh Sinha, today claimed that politically motivated groups were misleading the government and parliament on the issue of the renaming of these two institutionsAddressing a press conference this afternoon, Sinha said it was wrong and unfortunate on the part of certain members of parliament to mislead the government and particularly Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on an issue without verifying all facts related to it.Claiming that the college is a fully owned and managed by the autonomous University of Delhi (Central University), Sinha rejected suggestions that it was a minority institution for education, and added that it was his view that "a certain lobby of the Dyal Singh College staff had roped in the SAD (Shiromani Akali Dal) to cry foul over 'hurt Sikh sentiments' when they failed to think of no other way to halt the educational reform measures of the new governing ...

3 SSA officials show-caused for 'misuse' of funds

Three block level officials Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) in Hailakandi district have been served show cause notice for alleged misuse of funds leading to procurement of poor quality school uniform, an official release said today. The district SSA Coordinator F R Laskar issued the show cause letter to Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEOs) of Katlicherra, Hailakandi and Lala yesterday. "Even after my strict instruction on April 3, no action was taken from your end till today, which naturally proves your failure in regulating the process of procurement of good quality school uniforms," the release said quoting the Laskar's letter. The BEEOs have been asked to reply to the show cause notice within three days or else disciplinary proceedings would be drawn against them, the release said. Several organisations and public representatives, including Hailakandi MLA Anowar Hussain Laskar have alleged large-scale misappropriation of funds in the name of procurement of school .

Govt can't interfere in DU's administrative matters: Dyal Singh College chairman on renaming row

Amid a controversy over renaming of the Dyal Singh (Evening) College as Dyal Singh Vande Matram College, the institution's chairman Amitabh Sinha today said the Delhi University is an autonomous varsity and the government cannot interfere in its administrative matters. Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar had yesterday said the government would not allow the renaming and take action against the management committee of the college for going ahead with it without the ministry's consent. In a press conference here today, Sinha said, "The DU is an autonomous university and therefore, the government cannot have a say in its administrative matters. Mizoram declares HSLC class 10 results, pass percentage at 77

The Mizoram Board of School Education today declared the class 10 results of the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination 2018 in which 76.65 per cent students were successful. A total of 18,355 candidates took the exam of whom 9,547 were girls and 8,788 boys. The number of students achieving distinction was at 1,068 while 3,725 students passed with first division. A total of 5,107 students secured second division and 3,663 passed with third division. The deficit schools, mainly managed by churches, notched a pass percentage of 92.55 per cent, followed by lumpsum schools and private schools at 81.46 per cent and 79.91 per cent, respectively. The government high schools recorded a 72.07 per cent pass percentage. While 105 schools recorded 100 per cent success rate, all the candidates of 15 schools were unsuccessful.

PILs seek nod for offline mode for engineering admissions process in TN

Two public interest litigations were filed in the Madras High Court today seeking that counselling and admission process for engineering courses in Tamil Nadu be conducted both in online and offline modes. A vacation bench of justices V Bharathidasan and N Seshasayee issued notice to the Higher Education Department Secretary and Anna University on the PILs returnable by a week. In their pleas, CVMP Ezhilarasan, a DMK MLA representing Kancheepuram constituency, and P Ponpandian, an advocate, claimed the online mode of counselling and admission process introduced by the university would be a disadvantage to students from rural areas. According to the petitioners, students from rural areas lacked English and computer knowledge required to apply and attend counselling online. Eerie silence descends on AMU campus, heavy police deployment

An eerie silence today descended over the AMU campus even as hundreds of student protesters gathered at the Baab-e-Syed gate, the scene of yesterday's violent incident in which around 20 students were injured in police action. Violence broke out at the Aligarh Muslim University yesterday after the right-wing protestors barged into the varsity demanding removal of the portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah displayed on the campus. Following yesterday's incident, policemen in large numbers and a RAF contingent were deployed near the Baab-e-Syed gate to maintain law and order. Govt gives nod to rename North Maha University after poetess

The Maharashtra government today decided to recommend the promulgation of an ordinance to rename the Jalgaon-based North Maharashtra University after poetess Bahinabai Chaudhari. The decision was taken by the state cabinet here at its meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. "The cabinet has decided to make a recommendation to the governor to promulgate an ordinance to rename the North Maharashtra University as 'Kaviyatri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University'," an official in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said. Earlier, during the state Assembly's budget session held in March, the chief minister had said the educational institution would be named after Bahinabai Chaudhari, the noted 19th century poetess. The demand for renaming the university was then raised by Eknath Khadse, former minister and the BJP MLA from Muktainagar in Jalgaon.
