Any blocking or disruption of traffic through the Strait of Hormuz -- a narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea -- will have significant global and regional impact, including for India's energy security, strategic affairs experts said on Sunday. Following the US bombing of three major Iranian nuclear sites, Tehran has indicated that closing the Strait of Hormuz for shipping is one of the options on the table to pressure its adversaries. Nearly 30 percent of global oil and a third of the world's LNG (liquefied natural gas) passes through the strait daily and its closure would immediately reduce global supplies triggering a spike in prices, they said. The closure of the narrow passage would have significant global repercussions across energy markets and it will impact India's energy security as well, Dr Laxman Kumar Behera, Associate Professor at Special Centre for National Security Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, told PTI. Behera said any disruption
Nearly half of India's installed power generation capacity of a total of 476 GW is non-fossil fuel-based as of June, but coal-based thermal electricity plays a critical part, according to government data. According to a government explainer on energy and environment issued on Sunday, India's total installed power capacity has reached 476 GW as of June 2025. Non-fossil fuel sources now contribute 235.7 GW (49%) of total capacity, including 226.9 GW renewable and 8.8 GW nuclear, it stated. As of June 2025, India's renewable energy includes 110.9 GW of solar and 51.3 GW of wind power installed capacity. In addition to the installed capacity, 176.70 GW worth of RE projects are under implementation, with 72.06 GW under bidding stages. It explained that thermal power remains dominant, accounting for 240 GW or 50.52 per cent of installed capacity. It noted that India's energy sector is heavily reliant on non-renewable thermal sources, which together account for the largest share of the
Helped by significant improvement in energy efficiency and investment capacity, India has been ranked 71st on a global Energy Transition Index released on Wednesday by the World Economic Forum. Sweden topped the list of 118 countries, followed by Finland, Denmark, Norway and Switzerland in the top five. China was ranked 12th, the US was 17th and Pakistan at 101st place. Congo was ranked lowest. While India's rank has fallen from 63rd last year, the WEF said India and China experienced the greatest overall improvement among large economies, especially in increasing access to energy and strengthening transition readiness. The WEF said the top five largest economies China, the US, EU, Japan and India will ultimately determine the pace and direction of the global energy transition due to their sheer size. Together, they account for around half of the global GDP, population and total energy supply (TES), and also nearly two-thirds of global emissions, giving them an outsized influenc
