Bowhead whales - the 'jazz musicians' of the Arctic - prefer to sing many different songs in the darkness of the polar winter, a study has found. Researchers at the University of Washington in the US have published the largest set of recordings for bowhead whales, to discover that these marine mammals have a surprisingly diverse, constantly shifting vocal repertoire. The new data suggests bowhead whales may be similar to cowbirds and meadowlarks, birds that learn a diverse, ever-changing repertoire of songs, maybe because novelty offers some advantage. Egypt arrests news editor amid media crackdown

Egyptian authorities have arrested the editor of an independent news website for operating without a license, the latest episode in a widening crackdown on independent media, officials said today. They said Adel Sabri was arrested late yesterday and taken to a Cairo police station, while the offices of the Masr al-Arabia website were shuttered. Prosecutors were questioning Sabri today, they said. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. The arrest came a day after President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi won a second, four-year term in office, with 97 per cent of the vote in last week's election. He faced no serious competition, after a string of potentially strong candidates were arrested or withdrew under pressure, leaving a single opponent who made no effort to challenge him. The officials said the Masr al-Arabia site was fined 50,000 pounds (nearly USD 3,000) by the media regulatory body earlier this week for publishing an Arabic

IPI terms contentious fake news guidlines "misguided policy"

The International Press Institute said today the Indian government's contentious guidelines on fake news, which had to be withdrawn, was a "misguided policy" that would have severely impaired the freedom of journalists and their ability to report on crucial issues. The Vienna-based global organisation of editors, journalists and media executives said the new norms would have deprived journalists of government accreditation for publishing what it termed "fake news". The Information and Broadcasting Ministry (I&B) had issued a statement on Monday, announcing that it would withdraw accreditation of journalists found to have published or broadcast fake news. The announcement, which did not define what constituted fake news, was strongly criticised by journalist and opposition parties, prompting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order the I&B Ministry to cancel its contentious guidelines. "We are grateful for the prime minister's quick response to this misguided policy", said Barbara

The Beatles' 'Yellow Submarine' to return to theatres for 50th anniv

On account of its 50th anniversary, the animated classic "Yellow Submarine", inspired by the music of The Beatles, will be released in the theatres again this July. The 1968 British children's animated musical fantasy comedy, directed by animation producer George Dunning, is ready to re-released after being restored in 4k digital resolution, EW reported. Entire digital clean-up was done manually to preserve the original hand-drawn animation in the movie. The background score and the songs were also restored in a 5.1 stereo surround sound format, including the numbers from the film's original track list, such as "Only a Northern Song", "All Together Now", "It's All Too Much" and "Hey Bulldog". The real Beatles participated in the closing scene of the film, contrary to reports that suggested the band members would lend their own voices to their characters. Their cartoon counterparts were voiced by other actors. The film was co-written by Lee Minoff, Al Brodax, Jack Mendelsohn and Erich .
