Robert Downey Jr-produced "Perry Mason" series has been picked up by HBO. The series, starring "The Americans" actor Matthew Rhys, will be helmed by Tim Van Patten, best known for directing many episodes of "The Sopranos", "Boardwalk Empire" and "Game of Thrones". Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald will be serving as writers and showrunners. Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, the limited series is set in 1932 Los Angeles and follows the origins of American fiction's most legendary criminal defense lawyer (Rhys). When a child kidnapping case breaks down his door, Mason's relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself. The show will be executive produced by Downey Jr, Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell of Team Downey, along with Jones, Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek and Van Patten. Rhys will also serve as producer.

"Roseanne" spin-off, "The Conners", has landed a second season order at ABC. The spin-off, starring John Goodman, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Ames McNamara and Laurie Metcalf, was born out of a controversy surrounding "Roseanne" lead star Roseanne Barr. The original show was cancelled in the aftermath of Barr's racist tweets against former President Barack Obama's aide Valerie Jarrett. "The Connors", which debuted in the US in October last year, revolved around the family of Roseanne Conner (Barr) grappling with her sudden death due to opioid abuse. The spin-off was a solid performer for the network as it averaged 9.5 million viewers per episode in the first season, reported Variety. According to Variety, Efron, 31, will take on the role of Fred Jones, while Seyfried, 33, will voice star as Daphne Blake. The film, titled "Scooby", is set to be directed by Tony Cervone from a script by Matt Lieberman. The two stars join Will Forte, Gina Rodriguez, Tracy Morgan and Frank Welker in the project. British star Idris Elba is in negotiations to join the cast of Fox Studios' fantasy action film "Mouse Guard". Based on David Petersen's comics and graphic novel of the same name, the film will be directed by "Maze Runner" helmer Wes Ball, reported Variety. If finalised, the 46-year-old actor will join actors Andy Serkis and Thomas Brodie-Sangster in the project. Actor-comedian Mindy Kaling is working on a new Netflix series which will be inspired by her own childhood. The 10-episode series is about the complicated life of a modern-day first generation Indian American teenage girl, the streaming giant said in a statement.
