Warner Bros, DC working on 'Blue Beetle' movie

"Blue Beetle" film is in the works at DC and Warner Bros. The film is based on the Mexican-American comic book character Jaime Reyes. According to Variety, the studio has roped in Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer to pen the "Blue Beetle" screenplay. Zev Foreman is executive producing the film for Warner Bros. The original "Blue Beetle" character, which debuted in 1939, had superpowers derived from a sacred scarab. He first manifested himself as Dan Garrett, a police officer who fought crime with superpowers. The second version of Blue Beetle was Ted Kord, Garrett's student who continued costumed crime-fighting, but had no superpowers. Reyes was created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner, and made his first appearance in a 2006 comic. The "Blue Beetle" series of comic books was launched in 2011 and cancelled after 17 issues in 2013.

Tom Hanks in talks to join Disney's live-action 'Pinocchio'

Hollywood star Tom Hanks is in early negotiations to play the fatherly figure Geppetto in Disney's live-action adaptation of its classic animated story "Pinocchio". Paul King is directing the film to be produced by Andrew Miano and Chris Weitz, reported Variety. King, Weitz, and Simon Farnaby have written the most recent draft of the film. The original animated movie revolves around living puppet who, with the help of a cricket as his conscience, must prove himself worthy to become a real boy. Geppetto is the puppeteer who created Pinocchio and eventually becomes the fatherly figure he always wanted.

'Blade Runner' anime series in works

"Blade Runner" will soon make it to the small screen as an animated series. According to Variety, Alcon Television Group has partnered with Adult Swim and Crunchyroll to produce and distribute a new anime series inspired by "Blade Runner 2049". Titled "Blade Runner-Black Lotus" the series will consist of 13 half-hour episodes. Details of the plot are being kept under wraps, but it is known that the story will take place in 2032 and will include some established characters from the "Blade Runner" universe. "I first saw 'Blade Runner' in 1982, at age 11. It has remained one of the defining films of my life. To be able to explore more of this universe, with the incredible talent we have on board, is a dream come true," said Jason DeMarco, SVP and creative director of Adult Swim on-air. The series will be produced by animation studio Sola Digital Arts. Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama will direct all episodes of the premiere season. The Wizard of Oz is the most influential film of all time, followed by Star Wars and Psycho, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Turin in Italy calculated an influence score for 47,000 films listed in the internet movie database(IMDb). The score was based on how much each film had been referenced by subsequent films. The study, published in the journal Applied Network Science, found that the top 20 most influential films were all produced before 1980 and mostly in the US. The Wizard of Oz is a 1939 American musical fantasy film. "We propose an alternative method to box office takings -- which are affected by factors beyond the quality of the film such as advertising and distribution -- and reviews -- which are ultimately subjective -- for analysing the success of a film," said Livio Bioglio, the lead author of the study. "We have developed an algorithm that uses references between movies as a measure for success, and which can also be used to evaluate the career of .

Veteran Bengali theatre personality dies

Veteran Bengali theatre personality Biplab Ketan Chakraborty died after prolonged illness early Friday. Chakraborty, who was suffering from liver diseases for a long time, died at his Dhakuria residence in South Kolkata at around 4 am, his family said. He was 72 and is survived by dancer wife Dipali Chakraborty and actress daughters Sudipta Chakraborty, Bidipta Chakraborty and dancer Bidisha Chakraborty. Earlier, he was treated in a private hospital. A prominent face in group theatre movement, Chakraborty had been involved with the 'Chetana' theatre group from the 70s till early 90s and essayed a pivotal role in 'Marich Sangbad', a popular production in Bengali theatre. Later he founded 'Theatrewala' group which had staged a widely acclaimed production 'Kancher Dewal'. He was a popular face too on small screen earning acclaim in mega-serials like 'Janmabhoomi.' Chakraborty had also acted in Bengali films 'Chander Bari' and 'Bhalobasar Anek Naam'.
