The first edition of the Mumbai- South Korea Biennale titled "Beyond the Frames" will be held from October 13-18 at the Sir JJ School of Art in south Mumbai. The biennale is jointly organised by Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai and K-Art International Exchange Association, South Korea in association with Inko Centre, Chennai. In a statement Friday, the city's premier fine arts institution said 120 artists from Korea and 70 from Mumbai will exhibit their works, including contemporary painting, print making and abstract painting, during the biennale. These works will be on concepts related to the artists' inner perceptions, cultural identity and exchange, freedom of expression and social cohesion, the statement informed. "It is also slated to bring together key speakers including leading international artists, art students, gallerists, art historians, curators, museum directors, critics and collectors to discuss a diverse range of topics," it added. Actor Riteish Deshmukh has come out in support of women who have been sharing their experiences of sexual harassment as part of India's #MeToo movement. Riteish's statement comes after his "Housefull 4" director Sajid Khan was accused of sexual harassment by three female actors and a journalist. Sajid has since stepped down as the director of "Housefull 4", which also stars Akshay Kumar and Bobby Deol. "Deeply disturbing to hear and read the news of so many women who had to go through these incidents of harassment in various fields. The New Academy Prize in Literature was formed in protest to denounce what its founders called the "bias, arrogance and sexism" of the venerable Swedish Academy, which selects Nobel laureates. Film maker Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra was Friday granted bail by a court here in connection with a copyright violation case related to Bollywood movie "Rang De Basanti". Mehra appeared before a court at Aurangabad in Maharashtra after a resident of the city alleged that Mehra's 2006 film "Rang De Basanti", starring Amir Khan, was based on his story. Last month, the court had issued a bailable warrant against Mehra for non-appearance in the case, said advocate S M Patel, who represents the complainant. Mehra appeared before judicial magistrate (first class) Purvoday Upadhyay Friday and was granted bail on a surety of Rs 5,000, the advocate said. The next hearing of the case will be on November 20.
Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Friday defended the police complaint against the editor of a Tamil weekly, saying he was hurt by the "continuous slander" published in the magazine against him and asserted that he would never be cowed down. Days after the arrest and subsequent release of R Gopal, the editor of the vernacular weekly 'Nakkheeran,' in connection with articles linked to an assistant professor of a college that allegedly disparaged the governor, the Raj Bhavan strongly refuted the charges. "Having been hurt by the continuous baseless slander, a complaint has been given under the law," a statement by Raj Bhavan said. "The links attributed to the governor or the Raj Bhavan in the issue concerning a college assistant professor Nirmala Devi is absolute falsehood and there is not a shred of truthfulness in it," it said, adding, "The statement given by Nirmala Devi to the police would itself bear out the truth."
